GURNEY G. PATTISON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOG-SIGNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,005, dated November 25, 1873; application filed July 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GURNEY O. PATTISON, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fog- Alarm and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in making a boat or float with a wheel in its center, which connects with a bell, in such manner that the tides will cause the wheel to revolve, and when said wheel revolves it causes the bell to ring, as will be set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Arepresents boat or float, constructed in any substantial manner, with an opening at its center running longitudinally of it, in which is placed a wheel, E.
j The buckets of this wheel extend below the bottom and above the top of the boat. H H represent two posts erected upon the boat, between which is hung a bell, F. This bell has a curved rod running beneath it, against which the buckets of the wheel strike when said buckets are in motion, thus causing the bell to vibrate and ring as it strikes its clapper. At each end of the boat are secured metallic bars B B, which are provided each with an eye or opening large enough to receive the uprights O C. These uprights can be made either of wood or of metal, but are driven securely into the earth. They are connected together at their upper ends by means of a cross-bar, D.
By the use of the bars B B and the uprights Letters Patent, is
The combination of the boat A with wheel E and bell F and the bars B B, connected to the boat and to the standards 0 0, all sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1873.
