This invention relates to improvement in tobacco pipes and particularly to improvements in a tobacco pipe such as described and claimed in my United States Patent No. 2,378,400, granted June 19, 1945.
-In addition to the objects and advantages obtained in the pipe of my previous patent, it is a further object of this invention to have an ejector type smoking pipe in which a seat is provided for the ejector mechanism. An additional object is to provide an air seal arrangement between the ejector mechanism and the bottom opening in the pipe, said seal arrangement being provided With adjustable means to admit air into the space below the ejector mechanism. Another object is to provide means for locking and unlocking the injector mechanism thus enabling locking together of the operating parts of the pipe, but at the same time enabling quick disassembling of the parts if so desired. Also, another object is to provide a combination of elements which will readily conduct a substantial portion of the heat from the interior of the pipe to the exterior thereof thus obtaining a relative cool smoke. Additional objects of the novel improvements will be obvious through use of the pipe and from the description of the invention.
With the above objects in view, the invention broadly comprises an ejector type smoking pipe, as described in my previous patent, provided with the combination of a tube having'a projection on its inner wall, xed in an opening of the bottom of the pipe, a round plug having a large head and asmaller diameter shank portion fo'r insertion into the tube, said shank of the plug having a circumferential groove for interlocking with the projection of the tube, and the upper edge of the tube adapted to receive a rounded projection formed on the bottom side of the ejector element thus providing a seat for the ejector element and also forming an adjustable air seal in the bottom of the pipe.

rHaving broadly stated the invention, a more detailed description will now be given with `refer-- ence to the drawing. In the bottom portion of the pipe bowl la hole I3 is provided into whichkva cylindrical-tberor bushing I4, having a teat I5 `projecting*from lthe inner wall thereof, is fixed. In use the pipe is normally operated as foliow's: The plate Il] vis moved to the lowest position in the pipe bowl by pushing the operating 'knob '8 toward mouthpiece 3. When the' plate is in the lowest position, the roundedprojectionl l willbe seated on the upper edge of tube i5. While Ain this position, and the pipe is smoked, airis substantially sealed from the lowei'poi'tion off-the pipe bowl. However, if the-'smokerohooses to admit air to the lower portion of the ybowl to obtain better vcombustion of 'the' tobacco or possibly a cooler smoke, the knob is merely moved slightly toward the pipe bowl. This action will tend to unseat'the rounded projection `lLvand some air will be drawn in'thr'o'ugh tube" r4', "The air iS' vi'ii'i through tbe I4 by Way 0f S'otwf smoke conditioning feature and adds greatly to the smoking enjoyment.
After the tobacco charge in the bowl has been smoked, the ash contents in the bowl are ejected, as described in my previous patent, by moving operating knob 8 toward the bowl thus raising plate I toward the upper edge of the bowl and emptying its contents.
As stated in the broad statement of the invention, the novel feature of this invention is in the combination of the rounded projection of the plate, the tube I4 provided with teat I5 and plug I6. Since the upper edge of tube I4 is relatively sharp, it forms a substantially self cleaning seat for the grate. Teat I5, on the inner wall of tube, interlocks with the circumferential groove I9 located on shank I8 of the plug, thus the entire combination of elements are held rigidly in place at all times. For disassembling the pipe elements, engagement between groove I9 and teat I5 may readily be broken as follows: pressure is removed from the reversely bent edge 9 by removing mouthpiece 3, thus the guiding channel 5 including spring I move from the plane of the shallow groove along the lower surface of the pipe stem. This movement of the spring is due to the normal tendency of the piece of flexible spring steel to straighten out. As soon as the channel 5 and spring have moved from the shallow groove, plug I6 together with the spring and channel may be turned until slot 2U comes' into alignment with teat I5, and the plug and ejecting mechanism are thus free for removal from the remaining parts of the pipe.
In order to more clearly portray the structure of the plug I6 and the interlocking of groove I9 with teat I5, Figure 4 shows an enlarged section view on a horizontal plane through groove I9 of plug I6 and tube I4 in Figure 2; the figure also shows a section through teat I5, which is a part of tube I4, projecting into groove I9 and thus forming a positive locking of the several parts.
Through use of the combination of elements, viz. the plate, tube and plug improved smoking conditions are obtained. A substantially perfect air seal may be obtained but as noted air may readily be admitted, thus combustion of the tobacco charge in the pipe may be controlled entirely by the pipe smoker. Also, through use of the specially designed plate, tube and plug the ejecting mechanism may be locked or unlocked at will without difficulty. By the expression mechanism may be locked and unlocked, I means the following: locked when the mechanism is assembled on the pipe and teat I5 and circumferential groove I9 are engaged to hold plug I6 in tube I4, and unlocked" when the plug I6 and the ejecting mechanism has been turned, as described to such position so as to be removed from the remaining parts of the pipe. Furthermore, since there is substantial contact between the three metal elements of the combination, heat is readily conducted from the burning tobacco charge to the plate, thence through the tube and tube walls and dissipated to the air by the plug, thus the smoker will enjoy a cooled smoke. The face of the plug is of substantial area so that, amongst other functions, it will enable dissipation of considerable heat to the atmosphere. l
Having described the improved ejector pipe, I claim as follows:
1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl provided with an opening in the bowl bottom, a stem provided with a guiding channel, a tube fixed in the opening of the bowl bottom, a teat projecting from the inner wall of the tube, a movable plate provided with a rounded projection on the bottom side thereof and a ilexible element extending from the rounded projection through the tube and into the guiding channel of the stem, a plug provided with a round shank for insertion into the tube, said shank having a groove partially around the shank body and a slot extending from one end of the plug through the body of the shank and curved gradually to open in the side wall of the opposite end of the plug, the teat in the tube being in interlocking relationship with the groove in the shank body, the upper edge of the tube forming a seat for the rounded projection of the plate and the flexible element being received in the shank slot of the plug and guided into the guiding channel of the stem.
2. In combination with a smoking pipe including a bowl provided with an opening in the bottom thereof, a stem provided with a guiding channel and a movable plate provided with a flexible element, the improvement which comprises a tube xed in the opening in the bowl bottom, a rounded projection on the bottom side of the grate which xedly receives one end of the ilexible element, a plug provided with a round shank for insertion into the tube, said plug having a slot extending from one end of the plug through the body of the shank and gradually curved to open in the side wall of the opposite end of the plug, the upper edge of the tube forming a seat for the rounded projection of the plate and the fiexible element being received in the shank slot of the plug and guided into the guiding channel of the stem.
3. In combination with a smoking pipe including a bowl provided with an opening in the bottom thereof, a stem provided with a guiding channel and a movable plate provided with a flexible element, the improvement which comprises a tube fixed in the opening in the bowl bottom, a teat projecting from the inner wall of the tube, a rounded projection on I,the bottom side of the plate which xedly receives one end of the flexible element, a plug provided with a round shank for insertion into the tube, said shank having a groove extending partially around the shank body and a slot extending from one end of the plug through the Ibody of the shank and curved gradually to open in the side wall of the opposite end of the plug, the teat in the tube being in interlocking relationship with the groove in the shank body, the upper edge of the tube forming a seat for the rounded projection of the plate and the flexible element being received in the shank slot of the plug and guided into the guiding channel of the stem.
4.
