' J. B. BEACH.
HOLDER FOR TABLE BELLS No. 267,131. Tatented Nov. 7, 1882.
N. PETERS. Fhorlo-LnMgnplm, wuhm m D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. BEACH, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO THE MERI- DEN BRITANNIA COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HOLDER FOR TABLE-BELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,131, dated November 7, 1882,
Application filed July 17, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. BEACH, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Im- 5 provement in Holders for Table-Bells; and I do hereby declare the following, when takeuin connection with accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
[ and which said drawing constitutes part ofthis specification, and represents in the figure a side view, a portion of flange broken away to show the bell-seat.
This invention relates to an improvement in 1 devices for supporting a call-bell in casters,
spoon-holders, and like articles of table furniture or service, the object being to provide a seat upon which a free bell may rest and be retained in its position so as to be readily removed to be rung, yet which cannot be sounded unless it be taken from its seat; and in such a construction, as more fully hereinafter described, my invention consists.
A represents the center spindle of a caster,
terminating in a bail-like or other suitable handle, B, at the top. On this center spindle a seat, C, is constructed to receive the hand- .bell I). This seat is best made with a flange, a, surrounding it, its internal diameter corre- 0 spondiugto the external diameterof the mouth of the bell, and so that the bell Will set closely therein, as shown. The flange prevents the accidental displacement of the bell, yet leaves the bell free to be removed to be rung; but
5 when on its seat the bell cannot be accidentally sounded, thereby overcoming a difficulty (No model.)
in various kinds of attached bells. The seat so deadens the vibration that if the bell be accidentally struck no sound of a bell-like character will be produced.
If preferred, the flange may be upon the inside of the bell-that is, so that the mouth of the bell will set over the flange upon the seat, instead of within it; but I prefer the external flange, as shown, because it hides thejoint between the bell and seat, which would otherwise appear.
From this illustration and description it will be evident to those skilled in the manufacture and use of articles to which this invention is 0 applicable that a seat may be provided on such articles in like manner as described for the caster, and upon which the bell will firmly rest. I do not therefore limit my invention to any particular article. 5 5
I am aware that bells have been arranged in articles of table-furniture so as to be taken therefrom to be rung-as, for illustration, in patent granted to me February 10, 18S0and therefore do not claim broadly a bell so arranged; but
What I do claim is- In articles of table-service, a seat, C, constructed as a part of such article, with a flange corresponding to the month of the bell D, and so that the said bell may rest with its mouth upon said seat as its support when not in use,
substantially as described.
