Description

M'. J. CERINO Dec. 22, 1953 PACKET Filed Sept. 11, 1950 INVENTOR. Wat/2466 J66/3d/20 BY @ZMQQQM ///5 AGENT Patented Dec. 22, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PACKET Application September 11, 1950, Serial No. 184,180
Claims.
This invention pertains to merchandise packages, and relates particularly to the novel construction of a packet by which razor blades, needles, hair pins and other articles of manufacture may be packaged for sale and display.
It is a principal object of the present inven tion to provide a packet of the folder type wherein articles are disposed loosely for convenient removal out confined against displacement when the packet is closed.
Another important object of this invention is the provision of a packet constructed from a single blank and folded in such manner as to facilitate the packaging of articles therein for shipment, display and sale.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a folder-type packet which may be arranged either to confine articles of manufacture therein for shipment or to display the articles openly for convenient access.
A still further and specific object of this invention is the provision of a folder-type packet in which a plurality of razor blades may be packaged loosely for shipment and to facilitate individual removal.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a razor blade packet embodying the features of this invention and showing the same in closed position;
Figure 2 is a front view of the packet shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side View of the packet shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the packet showing the same in open position;
Figure 5 is a sectional View of the packet illustrated in Figure 4 and showing the same supported in vertical position;
Figure 6 is a. side View of the packet showing the same arranged in open position for displaying the razor blades from a horizontal support;
Figure 7 is a plan View of a blank from which the above razor blade packet is constructted; and
llil
Figure 8 is a plan View of a blank from which dotted lines 2 and 3. A single line may be used in place of the spaced lines 2 and 3, although the latter construction is preferred. Similarly, a pair of spaced lines may be substituted for the single bending line I. In any event, the lines may, if desired, constitute score lines impressed in the blank by means well-known in the art. The bending lines are arranged to divide the blank into three sections, namely, the cover 4, the back 5 and the locking section 6. In the embodiments shown in the drawing, the sections are of substantially equal length, although the dimensions may be varied as desired.
Referring now particularly to Figure 7 of the drawing, the locking section 6 is provided with a rectangular opening 1 of substantal length. The width of the opening is preferably substantially equal to the width of the wrapped razor blades 15 in order to prevent lateral movement and pcssible displacement of the latter when inserted in the packet. As shown in the drawing, the opening l is formed by cutting a U-shaped slit 9 in the locking section 6, the spaced ends of the slit extending toward the free end of said section. The central tab it formed by the slit 9 may then be bent along the dotted line H obliquely oi the plane of the locking section to form the opening l. As shown in Figures 7 and 8, the tabs it have been bent obliquely away from the plane of the section 6 so as to expose the openings 1 to view. Alternatively, the tab it) may be removed from the section i by severing it along the dotted line Hi. It is preferred that the tab ill remain, however, for purposes explained in detail herein after.
A portion of the cover section t adjacent its free end is reduced in width to form a tongue 52 proportioned and arranged to be received removably in the opening 7 when the packet is closed. It is to be noted that the length of tongue i2 is substantially equal to the distance between the score line 3 and the adjacent edge of opening 1. This distance is preferably made as great as is practicable for the article to be packaged in order that a long tongue may be provided to insure against accidental opening of the packet. In the embodiments illustrated, this distance is slightly less than one-half the length of the razor blades 8.
A transverse slot i3 may also be provided in the cover for cooperative registration with the tab It. As shown in Figure 6 of the drawing, the end of tab it may be inserted in the slot I 3 for abutment with the underlying back 5. In this position functions as a brace for supporting the locking section B in an inclined position for displaying the razor blades. Alternatively, substantially the entire tab It may be inserted through slot It, as shown in Figure 5. In this position the tab lies between the back and cover 4 and functions to secure the locking section 5 releasably to the cover 4.
Holes it are provided in each of the sections 4, 5 and 6 for cooperative registration when the packet is folded to either of the positions best shown in Figures 1 and e. In this manner the packet may be supported upon a peg E5 in either closed or open arrangement, as described in detail hereinafter.
In Figure 8 there is shown a packet which pro-- vides a plurality of openings for packaging greater quantities of razor blades or other articles. Each opening l is provided with its corresponding tab iii, tongue 12 and slot is as described hereinbefore. Thus, as many pockets as desired may be provided in a single blank by substantial duplication of the construction previously described.
The packet is employed in packaging razor blades as follows: The blank is folded along the dotted lines l, 2 and 3 in such manner that the locking section 6 and cover 4 are caused to overlap. A quantity of wrapped razor blades, for example five in number, is inserted in the opening I, the inserted ends of the blades abutting against the edge of the packet defined between fold lines 2 and 3. The tab It, if provided, underlies the razor blades adjacent the back section 5. The cover is then folded over the locking section 6, and tongue 42 is inserted through opening '1 between the first razor blade and the locking section. The filled packet is now ready for shipment.
Referring particularly to Figures 3, 5 and 6 of the drawing, it is to be noted that the sides of the locking section 6 adjacent the lateral edges of the opening 1 curve smoothly across the lateral edges of the blades 8 from the edge 9 of the opening adjacent the line 3 to the dotted line H. The blades are thus secured for a substantial distance along their edges, and thereby are prevented from becoming displaced in the packet during transport and other normal manipulations. This provision of an opening I of substantial length is an important feature of the present invention.
The razor blades may be displayed, for example, upon a merchandise counter either in the closed packet or by opening the packet as follows: The tongue i2 is withdrawn from the opening 1 and the cover t bent back. The locking section 6 is then raised from its position against the back 5, and the cover t folded down against the back. The tab Hi is then bent at a, substantially right angle to the plane of the locking section 5 and the free end of the former is inserted in the slot it provided in the cover Mas illustrated in Figure 6. In this position the razor blades extend outwardly from the inclined locking section 6 for attractive display.
The blades may also be displayed for convenient access in the home, as follows: Upon purchasing a packet of the blades, the cover 4 is bent back, the locking section 6 raised, and the cover placed against the back 5. The locking section is then folded against the cover with the blades exposed to view. The opened packet may then be supported upon a peg 55 provided at the desired location by hanging the packet from the registering holes 15. Alternatively, the tongue I2 may be inserted through the slot 13 to the position shown in Figure 5, whereby to lock the looking section 6 and cover 4 together. It is apparent that by this latter arrangement the locking section 6 need not be as long as illustrated and that the hole I4 provided in the locking section may be omitted. The open packet may be supported upon a peg by the registering holes It provided in the cover and back sections.
' From the foregoing description it is apparent that the present invention provides for the novel packaging of razor blades for shipment and display. The packet is of simplified and therefore economical construction. It provides for the packaging of one or more individually wrapped blades and facilitates the removal of the blades when desired. 'The packaging of the blades for shipment is also simplified, since all that is required is the insertion of a desired number of blades in the opening f.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various other articles of manufacture may be packaged in the packet of this invention. For example, needles may be secured to fiat cards in the usual manner and a plurality of the cards inserted in the opening i of the locking section 55. Similarly, hair pins may be arranged upon cards which are receivable in the opening 7. Sticks of chewing gum, fiat cosmetic bottles and many other articles may also be packaged in this manner. In any case it is necessary only to proportion the packet properly to accommodate the article to be packaged.
It will also be apparent to those skilled in the art that various details of the structure described hereinbefore may be modified without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention. Accordingly, it is to be understood that the foregoing description is merely illustrative of the invention and is not to be considered in a limits sense.
Having nowdescribed my invention and the manner in which the same may be used, what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
