Initials 'or other ornamental members fpr jewelry are usually mounted from their edges with some sort of support from the opposite edges of the member.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a mounting for an initial or other ornamental member from one edge only thereof.

Another object of the invention is to provide a mounting for an initial or ornament so that the same will stand up from its mounting base and contrast with the surface upon which the mounting is secured.

Another object of the invention is to provide a tongue which may be inserted in a slot in the mounting member, with means to hold the tongue in such inserted position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a construction by which the initial of the person purchasing the article may be assembled on the article at the time of purchase.

Another object of the invention is to conceal the securing means for the ornamental member which is secured to the mounting member.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is face view illustrating a tie clip, as provided with the ornamental members which are the subject of this invention.

Figure 2 is an elevation of the tie clip as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clip with the ornamental members or initials omitted.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the ornamental members or initials which is assembled with the structure of Figure 3.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the ornamental member looking at the rear side and on a larger scale than Figure 4.

I .i io gegif eit ihihig vs i n.-,l.nr ri e bar like mounting member ith a m ber, with slots leading into the hollow c h niber along the edge of a bar-like strip of stock, and I provide initials each with a tongue to extend into a slot with some sort of means within the hollow chamber to lock the tongue thereon. This locking may be by means of a latch on one of the parts, and a catch on the other to hold the tongue in position. A shoulder is provided adjacent the tongue to rest upon the edge of the bar about the slot opening, and the engagement of the tongue is such as to hold this shoulder in engagement with the bar. Additional means may also be provided to prevent rocking of the ornamental members in the mounting.

With reference to the drawings, a strip of stock designated generally In is struck to provide a heavy front portion I I which may be indented for ornamental purposes, as at I 2, while a thinner leaf l3 may be formed extending upwardly from the thicker portion II. This leaf is is then bent rearwardly, as shown in Figure 8 at l5. By further bending, as at I6 and ll, there is provided a chamber [8, between the back portion I9 of this leaf and the opposite surface of the heavy bar I I, while a flange 20 extends from this rear portion forwardly to the bar to close the chamber I8. Slots M to provide entrances to the chamber are provided in the bent wall l3 leaving a lip 43 extending from the back wall [9 toward the front wall I l of the chamber. The portion of the front bar 2|, which extends beyond the end of portion l I, is bent rearwardly upon itself to provide a jaw 22 (see Figures 2 and 3), which is deflected as at 23 to provide a mouth portion 24 for sliding onto the shirt. A resilient strip 25 may be formed to provide a pressure point at a second location of this jaw.

The ornamental members are designated generally 35, and comprise initials or other subjects 36 of a generally thick dimension, from which there extends a tongue 31 of a much thinner dimension, and thus provides a shoulder 38 between this thicker portion and the tongue 31.

The tongue 31 is provided with a pair of latches 4|], bent outwardly and rearwardly from the stock of the tongue 31, while angular feet 4| extend rearwardly at the lower edge of the tongue 3! and projections 42 are struck outwardly from the tongue just above the angularfeet 4|.

The ornamental member 35 is assembled on the bar by first passing the angular feet 4| through the slot M, as shown in Figure 10, and then the tongue 31 may be passed through this opening with the rearwardly extending projections 42 engaging the edge of the slot (Figure 11) while the feet 4| engage the inner surface of the back IQ of the chamber. The latches l0 engage beneath the lip 43 adjacent to slot H which serves as a catch to engage this latch and hold the ornamental member snugly in position with its shoulder 38 engaging the bar I l.

I claim: a I

1. In combination a mounting member having a hollow chamber with a lip extending from one wall to a point spaced from an opposite wall and leaving an entrance slot into the chamber, an ornamental member having a tongue to ex= tend through said slot into said chamber and having a resilient latch projecting therefrom, said latch engaging said lip, said tongue having a foot extending at right angles to engage one of said walls and prevent rocking of the member in the chamber.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein projections are provided above said latch to engage the edge of said lip.

In combination a mounting member hav ing a hollow chamber with a lip extending from one wall to a point spaced from an opposite wall and leaving an entrance slot into the chamber; an ornamental member having a tongue to ex= tend through said slot into said chamber and having a resilient latch projecting therefrom, said latch engaging said lip, the inner end of the tongue being offset in the same direction as the latch to engage the inner surface of the wall of the hollow chamber from which the lip ex tends to prevent the ornamental member from rocking in the slot.
