This invention relates to buttons made from strips of leather as used for utilitarian or ornamental purposes on the outer clothing of individuals, such buttons presenting a pleasing appearance, and being substantially mdestructable and convenient to handle.

The principal object of the invention is to provide means for sewing the button to an article of clothing consisting of an eye made of one piece of material.

Another object of the invention is to provide means to firmly anchor the eye to the interior of the button.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means to securely lock the ends of the eye together against any outward pull.

Other objects will appear as the disclosure progresses. The drawings are intended merely to indicate a possible embodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the needs of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes.l It is therefore not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated but rather to define such limits in the appended claims.

For a more general understanding of the invention attention is now called to the drawings. In these drawings like reference characters denote like parts throughout the specilication.

Referring to the drawings in detail numeral 1 represents the body of the button made from a strip of leather and having an arched outer surface 2 and a ysubstantially flat base 3. Vithin the body of the button as seen in Figure is embedded the upper portion of the eye -t preferably made from flexible ma terial, the lower portion being exposed so it can be sewed to an article of clothing.

The body portion of the eye Aas noted in Figure 5 is made from one piece of material. `Means are provided to lock the ends together so an endless loep will be formed. The said means consists of forming one end 5 of the eye in the shape of an arrow head and the opposite end with a slot 6. As indicated in Figure Il the end 5 is adapted to pass through the slot 6 and be locked in place. Any tendency to any outward distention of the eye will be resisted by the shoulders 7 of Athe arrow head bearing against the enlarged end 8 of the eye.

In practice the strips of leather are loosely woven together `forming the body portion, the ends ofthe eye locked together as indicated in Figure 6 and then inserted in the interior of the body portion of the button. The loosely formed buttonv isthen placed under a powerfully forming die where the button is finally given a permanent set under great pressure.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a means for fastening a but-ton to an article of clothing consisting of an eye made of one piece of material. rllhe ends of the eye can easily be locked together forming a loop. The opposite ends of the loop are liared out so they can be securely fastened within the body of the button.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim:

l. In a button of the class described, a body portion, an eye for sewing said button to an article of clothing, said eye made of one piece of material, means to lock the r:

ends of said piece of material together so an eye will be formed, and means to anchor the locked ends of said eye within the interior of the body portion.

2. In a button of the class described, a

body portion, an eye for sewing said button to an article cf clothing, said eye made of one piece of material, means to lock the ends of said piece of material so an eye will be formed, said means consist-ingl of a slot cut in one end of the piece of material and an arrow shaped opposite end which is adapted to fit and be locked in said slot, and means to anchor the locked ends of said eye within the interior of said body portion.

In a button of the classdescribed, an eye fastened to the interior of said button, said eye made from one piece vof material, one end of the piece of material having an enlarged portion including a shoulder, the opposite end of the piece of material having a slot, said iirst mentioned end adapted to tit in said slot, said shoulder adapted to bear against the surface of the piece of material adjacent the slot and be locked in place against any outward pressure.
