SLIDE FASTENER TAPE Filed May 4, 1932 INVENTOR M ax Kiessling. BY
ATTORN EY Patented Mar. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES MAX KIIESSLIENG, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT SLIDE FASTENEB TAPE Application filed May 4, 1932. Serial No. 609,117.
This invention relates to slide fastener tapes, and more particularly to a method for reinforcing the edge of a tape to which slide fasteners may be attached.
One object of this invention is to produce a slide fastener tape having a reinforced edge employing .a doubled up flat tape having hems on both edges, which hems are stitched together to form a single thick edge suitable O for retaining fastener elements thereupon.
A further object is to provide a fastener tape of the above nature which will be simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, and
very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
In thedrawing:
Fig. 1 represents a section of a complete slide fastener tape embodying the invention, showing several fastener elements attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the slide fastener tape.
Figs. 3 to 7 inclusive represent'perspective views illustrating the successive steps in the process of manufacturing the fastener tape. Previous methods of manufacturing a slide fastener tape having an enlarged edge suitable for holding slide fastener elements were quite expensive due to the fact that it was necessary to' employ a tape of special construction and to attach along one edge a cord filler member to produce the required ripping means for the fastener elements.
y means of the present invention the above and other disadvantages have been avoided.
f Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the
numeral 10 indicates a folded strip of tape having its side edges folded over one or more times and stitchedtogether to form a single thick built-up reinforced flexible edge 11 to which a plurality -of equally spaced fastener elements 12 are to be later attached.
The method of constructing the tape is 53 shown in successive steps in Figs. 3 t0 7 inclusive. Fig. 3 illustrates a flat strip of flexlble fabric tape 13, such as is commonly. used in dress-making. The first step of the process of manufacture is to fold this strip to form two plies 14 and 15, as shown in Fig. 4. The edges of the tape 13 are then folded upwardly and downwardly upon themselves to form a pair of hems 16 and 17, as shown 1n Fig. 5. The next step is to fold the hems back upon themselves .a second time to form a pair of triple ply hems 18 and 19, as shown in Fig. 6.
The two plies 14 and 15 of the folded tape 10 are finally brought together, as shown in Fig. 7, and a row of transverse stitches 20 are sewed through the juxtaposed hems 18 and 19 to permanently unite them together into the heavy reinforced edge 11 previously referred to.
' One of the advantages of the present invention is that by constructing the thickened reinforced fastener attaching edge from the tape material itself, the tape 10, in its complete form, is rendered considerably more pliable than were the old forms of fastener 7 tapes where cords or fillers were sewed to the edges. This results in making articles of clothing in which the fasteners are used more comfortable for the wearer.
A further advantage is that the sliding member which locks and unlocks the fastener elements functions much more readily and is less liable to 1' am.
In case it may be desired to stiffen the tape, the open loop or pocket thereof is well adapted for receiving stifiening members or strips which may be easily threaded therein.
. Itwill be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the use of the tape for holding slide fasteners, but is capable of many other uses within the general scope.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all 1 the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a slide fastener, a longitudinal strip of fabric tape, a plurality of fastener elements secured along one edge thereof, said strip being folded over into two unconnected intermediate plies and having hems folded over one or more times along both edges of said plies, said hems being stitched together to form a heavy thick flexible edge for receiving said fastener elements. a
2. In a slide fastener, a longitudinal strip of fabric tape, a plurality of fastener elements secured along one edge thereof, said strip being folded over into two unconnected intermediate plies lying in flat contact and having hems folded over one or more times along both edges of said plies, said hems being stitched together to form a heavy thick flexible edge for receiving said fastener elements.
3. In a slide fastener, a longitudinal strip of fabric tape, a plurality of fastener elements secured along one edge thereof, said strip being folded over into two unconnected intermediate plies and having hems folded over outwardly away from the center one or more times along both edges of said plies, said hems being stitched together to form a heavy thick flexible edge for receiving said fastener elements.
4. In a slide fastener, an elongated folded I piece of fabric tape, a plurality of fastener elements secured along one edge thereof, said tape, comprising a single strip of flexible fabric folded longitudinally to form two plies, the edges of said tape having hems formed by an outwardly extending double fold, said hems being permanently secured together to produce a thick edge for receiving said fastener elements.
In testimony whereof, I have aifixed my signature to this specification.
MAX KIESSLING.
