Description
June 10, 1952 A. A. JOHNSON TIE HOLDER OR THE LIKE Filed Jan. 15, 1950 Patented June 10, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TIE HOLDER OR THE LIKE Albert A. Johnson, Hoxle, R. I., assignor to Anson Incorporated, a corporation of Rhode Island Application January 13, 1950, Serial No. 138,329
3 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to the jewelry art, and has particular reference to a novel construction for an article of jewelry such as a tie holder or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an article of jewelry with a concealed slide holder for photographs or other idicia.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of jewelry having a tubular recess in which a slide holder for photographs or the like is removably mounted.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective front view of a tie holder embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective rear view of the tie holder, the slide holder being partly revealed; Fig. 3 is a perspective front view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an exploded view of the tie holder parts;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cuff link, embodying the invention, the slide holder being removed; and
Fig. 6 is a similar view of a money clip embodying the invention.
It has been found desirable to construct an article of jewelry, such as a tie holder or the like, with a recess in which a slide holder is removably mounted, whereby photographs, signature cards, or other indicia may be positioned in the slide holder and are normally concealed from view. To this end, I make the tie holder or the like of tubular stock to provide a recess housing, and I mount a slide holder in the housing, the slide holder preferably having a removable base in which the photographs or other indicia may be inserted.
Referring to the drawings, the tie holder I is generally of conventional type, with a resilient shirt hem engaging rear element II and a front element l2 which may be suitably ornamented in any desired manner, the rear element ll being joined to one end of the front element by a reverse bend l3, and being integral or secured to the front element as desired.
The front element I2 is of tubular stock, preferably rectangular in cross-section, with its outer end [4 open to receive a slide holder l which has an ornamental hollow end l6 adapted 2 to snugly fit overthe open end H. The slide holder has its sides [1, l8 shaped to seat within the associated walls of the front element, and the sides have inwardly directed flanges I9, 20 for removably receiving a base 2| adapted to receive photographs or other indicia.
As illustrated in Fig. 4, the base 2| has an elongated strip 22 and arcuate spacing members 23, 24, 25 and 26, the member 23 having a finger receiving recess 21 and the member 26 having a terminal lip or bead 28 for seating within the ornamental hollow end l6 of the slide holder. Photographs 29, for example, are readily positioned on the base between the spacing members, which may be of any desired member, and the base is then slid into the slide holder below the flanges I9, 20; slight grooves or dappings 30 in the flanges seat behind the member 26 to releasably lock the base in the slide holder. To review the base, a finger nail inserted in the recess 21 will pull the base forwardly past the grooves 30.
When the slide holder is seated in the housing it is releasably held by the sliding fit of the slide holder sides and the spacing members against the interior walls of the housing. The slide holder can be withdrawn by pulling on the hollow end I6, and the withdrawal is facilitated by a cut-away portion 3| on the rear wall of the housing, whereby a finger nail can be inserted to press against the end Hi.
The invention may be applied to other jewelry items. Thus, the cuff link 32, see Fig. 5, has a tubular ornamental element 33 with an open end 34 to receive a slide holder 35, constructed as above described, the other end 36 being closed by a matching closure element 31.
Similarly, a money clip 38, see Fig. 6, has a tubular ornamental front member 39 and a rear spring clip 40 of conventional type, the open end 4| of the front member receiving a slide holder 42 constructed as explained above, whereby an article of jewelry with a hidden, but removable photograph carrying slide holder is provided.
section, said member having an open end, a slide holder slidably mounted in said member and having sides seating within the sides of the member, said slide holder sides having inwardly directed flanges, and an indicia carrying base slidably seated in said slide holder beneath said side flanges.
2. In an article of jewelry, an ornamental member of tubular form and rectangular crosssection, said member having an open end, a slide holder slidably mounted in said member and having sides seating within the sides of the member, said slide holder sides having inwardly directed flanges, and an indicia carrying base having spacing members slidably seatedin said slide holder beneath said side flanges.
3. In an article of jewelry, an ornamental member of tubular form and rectangular crosssection, said member having an open end, a slide holder slidably -mounted in said member and having sides seating within the sides or the member, said slide holder sides having inwardly directed flanges, and an indicia carrying base having spacing members slidably seated in said slide holder beneath said side flanges, said slide holder having releasable lock means for releasably retaining said base therein.
