VIZ/M35555 Z UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM B. ,DRAPER, OF CAMBRIDGE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EUGENE H. RICHARDS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,710, dated May 16, 1893. Application filed January 19, 1893. Serial No. 53,965- (N model-l T0 at whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DRAPER, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve- 5 inentin Clasps and Cast-Offs, of which the following description,in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to clasps and castoffs, and my invention consists in various details of construction to be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1, shows in front elevation a clasp l5 and cast-off embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a rear side view of the clasp and cast-off shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an enlarged vertical section of the clasp and cast-off shown in Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line w-w; Fig. 4., details of the cast-0E; Fig. 5, details of one part of the clasp; Fig. 6, a front elevation of a modified form of clasp and cast-off embodying this invention; Figs. 7 and 8, rear and side views of the same; Fig. 9, a detail of one of the parts of the modified cast-off. The clasp shown in Figs. 1, to 5, inclusive consists of the plate at, having upon its rear side several curved pins or pointed projections (1,, which are adapted to penetrate the cloth I), or other material, and the plate 0 having a cavity 0 shaped to receive and firmly hold itself upon the plate a, and also preferably a plate d havinga socket or recess (1', to receive the points of the pins a, and prevent them from accidentally injuring anything. The plates 0 and cl it will be seen thus lie at opposite sides of the material to be clasped, and said plates are extended upwardly for a short distance and connected together loosely by a rivet (1 The clasp shown in Fig. 3, is in engagement with the material, and to disengage the same the plate 0 is removed from its engagement with the plate a, after which the plate a may be readily removed.
Referring to Figs. 6 to 9, the clasp also consists of the plate a, having curved pins or prongs a and the plate 0 having a cavity or recess formed byoverturning the sides of said plate to receive and firmly hold itself upon the plate a.
The cast-off consists of a plate f having rigidly secured to it the projection f, with a transverse slot or recess f and the plate 9 having a hole through it to receive said pro jection f, and the cross bar g, pivoted to said plate g, and other than round in cross section so as to enter said slot or recess g, and when turned therein is prevented from becoming detached. This cross bar g, has connected with it a lever or finger piece g by means of which it may be turned when desired. The face of the plate g has formed upon it a recess or countersink to receive said finger piece when depressed. The plate g is herein shown as formed integral with or as an extension of the plate 0.
Referring to Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive the plate 9 is provided with ears 9 to which the cross bar 9' is pivoted and said cross bar is provided with a downwardly extended finger piece of a different form.
I claim- 1. The described clasp consisting of a suitable supporting plate, a plate a connected therewith, a plate a removably supported by the said plate a, said plate or having prongs projecting from its rear face, substantially as described.
2. The described clasp consisting of a suitable supporting plate, a plate 0 connected therewith, a plate a, having prongs projecting from its rear face removably supported by said plate 0, and a sheath or pocket d to cover 7 said prongs, substantially as described. 8 5
3. The described clasp consisting of the plate a the plate Ct removably supported thereby, a platef supporting the plate 0 and a detachable connection between the plates f and c with means for locking the same together, 9c substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM B. DRAPER.
