R4044 Burr MW m Arrows/e75 Patented Dec. 8, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention is for an improved girdle of completely closed or band form which is so constructed as to be particularly well adapted to ensure a combined feeling of security and comfort when worn by an expectant mother; and this constitutes the general object of my present invention as herein set forth.

A further object is to devise such a girdle that is so constructed as to afford suitable yieldability in the several sections thereof for conforming with the variations in the contour of the abdominal region when worn by an expectant mother.

Another object is to devise such a girdle that is so constructed as to be capable of being worn in several different positions with respect to the abdominal region according to the desire of the user at any particular period of time during the stage of natural development of that particular region of the body,

A still further object of my present invention is to devise such a girdle that possesses the several desirable characteristics herein set forth with respect to the combined sensation of security and comfort upon the part of an expectant mother and that may, at the same time, be manufactured in a comparatively simple manner so as to be capable of being sold at a reasonable price.

Another object of my present invention is to devise a girdle of the belt form that is so constructed that it can be worn with altogether satisfactory control and comfort in that it will not ride, creep or roll even without wearing any stockings, whereas it is customary to rely upon the stockings as a means of anchoring the girdle.

Other objects will appear from the following description and claims when considered together with the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 1 illustrates my present improved form of girdle in front elevation;

Fig. 2 illustrates the same in rear elevation;

Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 illustrate the panels or blanks from which the several sections of the present girdle are formed; the blank la corresponding to the front section, the blanks 2a and 3a corresponding to the side sections, and the blank 4a corresponding to the rear section.

It is to be understood that thepresent form of disclosure is merely for the sake of illustration and that there might be devised various modifications thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.

My present form of girdle comprises first, a front section I which may be formed from a onepiece panel of suitable fabric Ia; second, a pair of duplicate side sections 2 and 3 which maybe formed from one-piece panels 2a and 3a, respectively, of suitable fabric; and third, a rear section 6 which may be formed from a one-piece panel 4a of suitable fabric. It is possible, of course, that all of these sections may be formed of the same character of material, although not necessarily so.

The front section I may possess an elasticity in only the vertical direction and may be of a generally trapezoidal outline except that the upper edge thereof may have an arched or curved form, as indicated in the accompanying drawing. This front section I may be reinforced by means of a substantially V-shaped additional layer of suitable fabric that is applied to the inner surface thereof by sewing the same along its two edges, and extending from the top for approximately two-thirds of the height of the section I the top edge of this reinforcement I b may remain free. This reinforcement may possess an elasticity in the same direction as the front section I. In forming the front section I from its panel la, the top and bottom edges thereof may be hemmed over inwardly.

In forming the sections 2 and 3, their original panels 2a and 3a will have their upper rear portions'2b and 3b folded down inwardly so as to form an upper curved folded edge in continuation of the convex curvature of the upper edge of the front section I, as clearly indicated in the accompanying drawing. Thus there will be obtained a continuously downwardly curved upper edge from the middle of the front section I to points in the rear part of the bottom edge of the device, as will also be clearly seen from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The edges of the inturned portions 2b and 31) will be sewed in place with a tape that extends from one point near the rear at the one side to the other point near the rear at the other side, this same tape being applied to the folded top edge of the front section I, this tape being of elastic character,

The side sections 2 and 3 may each possess an elasticity in an angular direction from the forward point at the top edge towards the rear point at the bottom edge thereof so as to adapt themselves about the hip regions of the wearer. The main portions of the sections 2 and 3, corresponding to the panel portions 2a and 3a, may possess also an elasticity in a horizontal direction. It should be explained that in applying the clastic tape and also in forming the seams elsewhere between the sections of the girdle, there may be provided a hidden fullness that may be taken up by the further development of the contour of the region of the body to which the girdle is applied and worn during the period of expectancy.

The rear ends of the side sections 2 and 3 are connected by the rear section 4 which is of a substantially trapezoidal form, in the opposite manner from section I, the larger base portion of the rear section 4 being at the top. The section 4 maybe formed by folding thedouble panel 4a in the midillethereof and sewingithej same to the edges of the sect'ions 2 and 3. The fearse'ction 4 is of less height than the front section l but they are both of substantially symmetricalform with respect purpose to be later explained. The entire bottom edge of the girdle is of substantiallyhorizon tal continuous form and may.,have elastig tapgi sewed about the inside thereof with the desired hidden fullness.

A girdle comprising a permanently and com-- pletely closed and continuous band form of structure having front and rear component band sections of different height, the section of greater height possessing elasticity in only the vertical direction and the section of less height possessing elasticity in only the horizontal direction, and duplicate side sections having their front and rear ends connected to said front and rear sections, respectively, and having their top edges inclined downwardly from the top edge of said section of greater height to the said section'of less height, said side sections being formed at their rear ends with overlying portions of substantially right triangular form with the hypotenuse there of in each instance corresponding to the aforesaid downwardly inclined top edge, and said side sections possessing elasticity in an angular direction from the top front portion thereof towards the rear lower portion of the same.
