' To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I. Josnrn A. WEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined body shaping and reducing garment of the corset and girdle type, and has for its object to provide a garment of the class referred to, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means when. worn to permit perfect freedom of movement of the wearer and further for concealing the fat of the waist. abdomen, hips and thighs.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinaftervset forth, a garment of the class referred to having means, when worn, to not only reduce the waist of the wearer. but also lengthen the waist line, as well as giving to the body of the wearer an erect. graceful carriage and an appearance of slenderness and yonthfulness.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garn'ient of the class referred to, having a resilient body portion acting when worn to exert a massage which is gentle and imperceptible yet powerful in its effect. resulting in the loosening of the fat and at the game time increasing the blood circulation so that the loosened fat is carried from the body of the wearer quickly.

A further object of the invention is to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to. capable of being worn as a corset. at the same time overcoming the discomforts or possible internal harm present when stiff corsets are worn. and enabling the wearer to keep her figure trim and supple. but accomplishing this latter without the uncomfortable feeling of being laced in.

A further object of the invention is to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, av garment of the class referred to, including means for adjust-ablyconnecting it in position upon the body of the wearer to reduce the size of the waist without any incon vcniencc when the garment is worn.

means for not only supporting the strained muscles of the side and back of the wearer, but further aiding to strengthen such muscles as well as supporting the great vital portion of the front cut away to insure conform when the garment is worn, as well as to permit it to fit snugly around the hips and thighs.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of. the class referred to, comprising a one-piece body portion having an adjustable lacing means. at the back, whereby the wearer can regulate the tightness or looseness with which the garment is to be worn and thereby enable the wearer, as she reduces to take the garment in.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to, comprising a body portion having its front provided with a stay device to prevent the body of the garment from rolling over at the top, whereby when worn a straight line front effect will he given to the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to, comprising a body portion having adjustable back cnds provided with stay elements and with these latter so constructed and arranged to prevent the poking thereof into the back of the wearer when the wearer sits down.

A further object of the invention is to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to, comprising a flexible body portion provided With hose supporters and by this arrangement the garment can be substituted for a stiff or other corset.

Further objects of the invention are to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth acombined body shaping and reducing garmcnt. which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong. durable, resilient,

The body portion of the garment, indicated at 1, is constructed from a sheet of resilient material of substantial length and thickness, preferably of Tara rubber, but it is to be understood that the body portion can be constructed of any suit-able material of the desired resiliency, but impervious to moisture. The body portion furthermore is of substantial width so when worn it will extend over the hips and upon the thighs. The front of the body portion 1 has a cutout part 2 of substantial width and preferably the side edges 3 of said cut-out part project away from each other in a direction towards thetop edge of the cut-out part. The cut-out part 2 projects 'an equat'distance from each sidof the vertical center of the front-of the'body portion 1. The cut-out part 2 is of a shape to make the garment comfortable when worn and further permits it to snugly fit aroundthe hips and thighsfof the wearer fin a manner as shown in Figure 1. I

The top edge of the body portion 1 is reinforced throughout, as at 4, and which is attained by bending the marginal portion of the top of the body portion 1 upon itself and inherently securing said bent marginal portion to the outer face of theibody portion 1. p v

The lower edge of the body portion 1 is reinforced and which is attained by bending the lower marginal portion of said body portion 1against the outer facet-hereof and inherently securing the said bent lower marginal portion to the inner face of 'the'body portion 1, as indicated at 5. The lower ed e of the body portion 1 is reinforced throng out, in the manner as stated.

Each end of the body portion 1 has its outer face provided with a reinforcing strip 6, of substantial width, and which extends from the top edge to the bottom edge of the body portion and further is flush with the said edges, as well as the end edges of the body portion 1. The reinforcing strips 6 are of the same material as the material from which the body portion 1 is formed and are inherently secured in position.

The body portion 1, in proximity to each lower corner of the cut-out part 2, has inherently or otherwise secured thereto a substantially rectangular reinforcing piece 7 of suitable length. The pieces 7 are secured against the outer face of the body portion 1 and are furthermore overlapped by the bent lower marginal portions 5 of the body portion 1. The lower marginal portion 5 overlap the bottom and one end of each of the pieces 7.

Secured to the outer face of the body portion 1, at the bottom thereof, is apair of reinforcing resilient pieces 8 of the same material from which the body portion 1, is set up. Each of the pieces 8 is inherently or otherwise secured to the body portion 1 and are arranged between a piece 7 and a strip 6, preferably centrally therebetween. Each of the pieces 8 has its bottom overlapped by the folded lower marginal portion 5. Each of the pieces 8 is rectangular in contour and of substantial length;

Opposing theouter face of the front of the body portion 1, centrally thereof, is a strip of fabric 18. of a width less than the width of the strip 16. Positioned against the outer face of the strip of fabric 18 is a strip of fabric 19, of the same width and length as the width and length of the strip 16. The side marginal portions of the strip 19 are inturned, as at 20, to overlap the inner face of the strip 18. The sides of the strips 16 and 19 are secured together by rows of stitching 21, and the said rows of stitching 21 extend through the body portion 1, and by this arrangement the strips 16 and 19 are secured to the body portion. The rows of stitching 21 are arranged in proximity to the side edges of the strips 16 and 19. Rows of stitching 22 are employed for securing the strips 16, 18 and 19 together and also for securing the said strips to the body portion 1. The rows of stitching 22 are arranged between the vertical center of the strips 16 and 19 and the rows of stitching 21. Each row of stitching 21 is spaced from a row of stitching 22. and this arrangement. provides in connection with the strips 18 and 19 a pair of pockets 23, 24, disposed vertically with respect to the front of the body portion 1. The bottom of the pockets 23 and 24 are formed by a transversely extending row of stitching 25, which is positioned a substantial distance from the top edge of the cutaway port-ion. The stitching 25 extends through the strips 16, 18, 19 and also through the body portion 1 and further provides means for securing the strips and body portion 1 together. The bottom of each of the pockets is curved, due to the manner in which the stitching is applied. The bottom of each of the pockets is positioned between the longitudinal center and bottom of the body portion 1. I

The providing of the front of the body portion 1 with a stay means. in a manner as referred to. prevents the garment from. rolling over at the edges and further gives to the wearer a straight line front.

The garment further includes an adjustable connecting device for securing the body portion 1 in position upon the body of the wearer, and furthermore the said connecting device includes a plurality of stay members and these latter are so set up that they will not poke into the wearers back when the wearer sits down.

The adjustable connecting device comprises a pair of aperturcd stay supports. a

plurality of stays in each support. and a lacmg common to said supports. Each stay support is fixedly secured to one end of the body portion. and as both supports are of like construction the description of one will apply to the other. l'lach stay support consists of a length of fabric bent upon itself to provide a pair of folds 29, 30. The fold 29 is of greater width thanthe fold 30 and has the marginal portion', at its free end. inturned upon itself, as at 31. Each of the stay supports further in cludes a strip 35 of fabric of substantial width; and which has the side marginal portions thereof intur'ued. as at 36. 37. and seating on the fold 29. The strip 35 and its inturned portion 37, as well as the folds 29 and 30 are secured together by a row of stitching 42. The folds 29, 30 and strips 35, 38 and 39 are secured together by spaced rows of stitching 43. Arranged between the pockets 40 and 41 is a row of spaced eyelets 45, which extend lengthwise with respect to the stay supports and further provide means for connecting the folds 29, 30 and strips 35, 38 and 39 together. The pocket 40 is of less length than the pocket 41, and for this purpose the pocket 41, at a point removed from the upper end of the stay support, is closed by a row of stitching 46.

Each stay support is of a length slightly greater than the width of the body portion 1. and each stay support. projects above the top edge and depends from the bottom edge of the. body portion 1. The upper ends of the strips which provide the stay support extend into a flexible fabric casing 47, and rows of stitching 48 are provided for se curing the casing 47 to the. flexible strips whereby the upper end of these latter will be incloscd within the casing. as well as socured thereto. the lower ends of the strips which provide the stay supports, is a fabric casing 49, se cured in position by rows of stitching 50.

Arranged in the pockets 40 of the stay supports are stay elements or members 51, and arranged within the pockets 41m the stay supports are stay elementsor members 52. The elements 52 have their ends terminating at a point in proximity to the casing 48 and 50. and are of greater length than the length of the stay elements 51.. The stay elements project. upwardly beyond the upper ends of the stay members 51 and also project slightly below the lower ends of the The lacing for adjustably connecting the stay supports together to provide for securing the garment upon the body of the wearer. is indicated at 53. and which extends through the eyelets 45 in each of the stay supports.

Rows of stitching 54 are provided to arrest downward shifting of the stay ele ments or members. The row of stitching 46 prevents the upward shifting of the stay elements or members 51.

By setting up the body portion 1, in the manner as stated, it exerts, when the garment is worn, a massage which is gentle and imperceptible, yet powerful in its effect.

This constant and gentle manipulation loosens the fat and at the same time in- Mounted on and inclosingcreases the blood circulation so that theloosened fat is carried from the body quickly. Furthermore owing to its resiliency it ermits perfect freedom of movement, it a so encircles the abdomen, waist, hips and thighs, and owing to its resiliency it overcomes the uncomfortable feeling of being laced in. The providing of the front of the body ortion, centrally thereof, with the stay device, not only prevents the body portion from rolling over at the edge but prevents bulging of the abdomen thereby giving to the wearer a straight line front efiect, yet said stay device does not cause any inconvenience to the wearer, at any position of the body, whether sitting or standing. The body portion is so shaped that when worn, it conceals the fat of the waist, abdomen, hips and thighs, as soon as it is placed in position, and furthermore it not only reduces the size of the waist, but lengthens the waist line as well, and when worn it gives to the body an erect and graceful carriage.

The body portion further acts to sup ort the muscles of the sides and back wit out any inconvenience to the wearer, and aids such muscles to become stronger and further acts to enable the great vital organs to resume their proper positions and to function more naturally. Owing to the body portion being resilient throughout. it becomes substantially a part of the body of the, wearer, bending and instantly adaptin itself to any position of the waist, hips an thighs without any inconvenience whatsoever to the wearer. 1 By constructing the garment with the body portion formed throughout of elastic material and cutting away the lower por-' tion of the front of the body portion substantially in the manner as shown, as well as positioning the hose suiporters at the points indicated, when the body portion is in encircling position with respect to the wearer, there will be. provided a downward diagonal pull in oppos e directions on said body portion. under such conditions causing the snug fit of the garment at the hips and thighs of the wearer.

It is thought that the. many advantages of a combined body shaping and reducing garment, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment. of the invention is as illustrated and described. yet changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the. light. of the invention as claimed.

What. I claim is 1. A garment for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion in the form of a split band and formed throughout of elastic material, said body portion havin the lower part of its front cut-away an Inn with the to edge of said cut-away portion extending at-erally from each side. of the vertical median of the front of the body portion, parallel stay elements secured to the center of the front of the body portion and extending from the top of the latter and tern'iinating a substantial distance above the top edge of said cutaway portion, oppositely extending casings projecting laterallv from the ends of said body portion an provided with means for adjustably securing the body portion in position upon the wearer. and a pair of stay members secured within each of said casine's. the inner one of the stay members of each pair of stay members having its upper end positioned a. substantial distance. below the upper end of the. outer stay member of thepair to provide a ready flexing of the upper portions of said casings.

2. A garment for the purpose set forth comprising abody-portion in the form of a split band and constructed of elastic material throughout, a flexible stay support conneeted to and projecting laterally from each end of said body portion and provided with a lengthwise row of spaced eyelets. a pair of spaced parallel stay elements arranged within each of said supports and having a. row of eyelets positioned therebetween, the outer one of the stay elements of each pair of stay elements projecting a substantial distance above the upper end of the inner stay element of the pair. and a lacing common to said rows of eye-lets for adjustably connecting said body portion in position on the wearer.
