To all whom it may ooncerni: Be it known that I, Lao E. Lnvr, a citizen of the United States of Amerlca, and

a resident of the borough of Manhattan,

city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to brassieres, and has for 1ts object to provide a garment of this type which, in a novel manner, combines the advantages of a brassiere and a corset and which may be termed a corset-brassiere. The invention further contemplates the provision of a corset-brassiere adapted especially for predetermined, specific purposes. Other more specific objects of my invention will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will'be pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate several examples of the invention without defining its limits, Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of one form of the garment; Fig. 2 is a view showing said garment laid out flat, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another form of the invention.

As shown in the drawings, the garment comprises front sections 5 of substantially inelastic fabric or other material, spaced apart and extending from the top to the bottom of the garment. Fabric members 6 are attached to the front sections 5 along a portion of the inner edges thereof, and project toward each other, as shown in Fi 2, said members 6 bein provided along t eir contiguous edges wit eyelets 7 for the accommodation of laces 8 whereby said members 6 are adjustably connected with each other; it will be understood that the eyelets 7 and laces 8 are intended to be representative of adjustable connecting means for said members 6 and that they may accordingly be replaced b equivalent devices. The members 6 are of esser vertical width than the front sections 5 and terminate at intermediate points of the inner edges thereof and are shaped and proportioned to constitute an abdominal section, the purpose and operation of which will appear more fully hereinafter. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the members 6 are provided with elastic inserts 9 which preferably converge towards their opposite ends and extend throughout the vertical width of said members 6; in the form shown in Fig. 3 these inserts 9 are omitted. If desired, the opposed edges of the members 6 may be bonedor otherwise stiffened in any well known way.

Those parts of the inner edges of the sections 5 which lie above the members 6 are connected by means of a fabric piece 10 which carries out-and completes the upper front portion of the garment and is continued downwardly in the form of a loose flap 11; the latter, in turn, is continued in the form of tabs 12 to which garters 13 of conventional form are attached. The flap 11 is of such dimensions as to be capable of substantially covering-the laced abdominal section and, in practice, may be worn either outside or inside of the members 6 which comprise said abdominal section.

The outer edges of the front sections 5 of the garment are connected with elastic inserts 14 which extend from the top to the bottom thereof and, in turn, are attached to rear sections 15 which comprise the back of the garment and which may be provided with co-operating fastenin devices 16, such as hooks and eyes, where y said rear sections 15 are detachably connected to fix the garment in place upon the wearer. The

rear sections 15 may also be provided with tabs 17 to which any well known type of garters 18 are secured, as shown in the drawngs. If desired, shoulder bands 19 may be Included for supporting the garment upon the wearer.

The garment is so constructed and proportioned' that when worn, the elastic inserts 1 4 will be located approximately along opposite sides of the wearer. At the same tlme, the members 6 will lie over the abdomen, the flap 11 being worn outside of the said members 6, as shown in Fig. 1, in which case said members 6 and the-lacing 8 are, hidden, or inside of the same, as shown in Fig. 3, as may be desired. By means of the lacing 8, the members 6 may be adjusted to fit the abdomen with any desired degree of snugness and may be accordingly caused to flatten and hold in the abdomen of the wearer, in which case the form shown in Fig. 3 is preferably utilized. Because of the presence of the inserts 9 in the members 6, the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is particularly adapted for wear by women during pregnancy. The inserts 9 not only permit the members 6 to yield, so that no harmful pressure is exerted thereby upon the abdomen, but in addition, because of their special shape, cause the members 6 to more efiiciently and closely follow the shape of the body during the indicated period. In both forms, the elastic side inserts 14 cause the garment to yieldingly hug the form of the wearer and to give thereto the support of a customary corset. By making it possible to wear the flap 11 either inside or outside of the members 6, the personal preference of the wearer may be gratified and at the same time the garment may be more effectively adapted to the different stages in the period of pregnancy. At the same time, the flap 11 may, in such cases where the same is desired, be caused to exert a confining effect in the most efficient manner.

Thecorset-brassiere provides a most eflicient combination of corset and brassiere which serves not only to confine the body in the desired manner, but also provides a mosteflicient support therefor; in addition, in its one form, the garment is particularly adapted for wear by a woman in a condition of pregnancy.

Various modifications in the specific forms shown and described may be madevwithin the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

In a corset-brassiere, the combination of front sections spaced apart, upper and lower fabric sections connected respectively with the upper and lower portions of said front sections and spanning the space therebetween in independent, vertical relation to each other to complete the front of the corsetbrassiere, saidlower section comprising an abdominal section adapted to lie over the abdomen of the wearer, means whereby said abdominal section may be adjusted, a loose flap depending from said upper fabric section and adapted to be worn either inside or outside of said abdominal section, garters depending from said flap and means for detachably securing said corset-brassire upon the wearer.
