invention relates to a combination portable beach tent and umbrella.

an object of this invention is to provide a combination-portable beach tent and umbrella which can be alternately used as a *dressing tent or a rain, sun orwind protector.

Another-object of this invention is to provide a combination portable beach tent and umbrella which' may' be quickly set up to provide an enclosure, s'o'thatanindividual may have privacy while 'changing from street clothes to a bathii'ig' suit and which can be slightly modified to 'pr'ovideanawnin'g or umbrella to protect against direct ex osurefto the sun, wind or rain.

Suitable structure is provided in each of the embodiments of the invention illustrated for modifying the tent to provide an awning or umbrella to protect a bather against direct exposure to sun, wind, and rain.

Referring now with particularity to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, there is shown one form of the combination portable beach tent and umbrella, generally designated by the reference numeral Hi, and including an upstanding support H, a depending apron l2 and a cover l3. The support ll embodies a pair of upright rods I4 and 15 arranged in spaced, parallel relation with respect to each other and each having the lower end thereof adapted for insertion into a supporting surface, such as beach sand. Extending between the rods [4 and 15 contiguous to the upper ends thereof and secured therebetween is a crossbar I6. Arranged intermediate the ends of the crossbar 16 is another crossbar H which is mounted on the crossbar H5 at a point intermediate its ends for pivotal movement into and out of a position transversely thereof. In the transverse position, the crossbars l6 and i1 cooperate to define a substantially rectangular supporting frame.

In Figure 2 there is shown the apron l2 utilized in the formation of the combination beach tent and umbrella illustrated in Figure l. The apron is fabricated of a flexible body l8 which is formed into an open-ended closure with the

19 and 20 confronting each other. Suitable interengaging means 2| and 22 are carried along the free side edges l9 and 20 for detachably securing the free side edges together. Arranged in end-to-end aligned and spaced relation with respect to each other is a first group of brace or stiffening rods 23 which are supported along the upper end of the body [8. Arranged in end-to-end aligned and spaced relation with respect to each other is a second group of brace or stiffening rods 24 which are secured along the lower end of the body H5. The respective rods 23 of the first group are arranged in spaced, parallel relation with respect to the respective rods 24 of the second group, and define

As clearly shown in Figure 4, the side panels are foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and are rollable into a compact, substantially cylindrical formation for transportation and storage, as depicted in Figure 5. A suitable fabric extension, generally designated by the reference numeral 29, is secured to or formed integrally with the lower end portions of the side panels 25 to 28 and cooperate therewith to form a pocket for the reception of various articles of clothing or ballast, such as sand. In Figure 1 is shown the cover is which bridges the open top of the enclosure formed by the side panels 25 to 28, inclusive, the cover l3 being detachably secured to the body I8 by means of the fastening elements 35 and 3! carried by the body l8 and the cover [3. The body 18 is suspendingly supported from the support H by any suitable means, such as the hooks 32 carried by the support H and the eyes 33 carried along the upper ends of the body It contiguous to the corners of the

25, 26, 2'! and Z8. Suitable interengaging elements are provided contiguous to the open mouth of the pocket formed by the extension 29 for constricting the mouth of the pocket, the elements being generally designated by the reference numeral 34.

In actual use, the upright rods l4 and I5 are inserted within a supporting surface. In the event that the rods cannot be inserted into a supporting surface, suitable feet or pedestals may be provided for the rods. The crossbar I! is then brought into the position illustrated in Figure 1 and the apron I2 is suspendingly supported therefrom. The cover I3 is then extended across the open top of the enclosure formed by the apron l2 and secured thereto by means of the fastening elements 30 and 3|. A suitable ballast may be placed into the pockets contiguous to the lower ends of the side panels and the device is ready to receive an individual desiring to change from street clothes to a bathing suit. After changing, the side panels 25 to 28, inclusive, may be folded toward the upper ends thereof and secured in the folded position, wherein the cover l3 and the folded-back flexible body [8 provide an awning or umbrella to protect the bather against direct exposure to sun, wind and rain.

In Figure 5 there is shown a modified form of the combination portable beach tent and umberlla which includes the support 1 l, the depending apron l2 and a circular cover or canopy l3. As clearly shown in Figure 7, the brace or stiffening rods 23 carried contiguous to the upper ends of the body [8, in the form of Figures 1 to 5, are replaced by a group of resilient rods 40 which are arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other and supported by means of the spaced rings 4| contiguous to and along the upper end of the body 18. Suitable bolt-and-nut assemblies 42 are operatively connected between adjacent ends of the rods 40 for pivotally connecting the rods together for movement into confronting relation with respect to each other. The group of stiffener or brace rods 24 contiguous to the lower end of the body l8, illustrated in Figure 2, cooperate with the resilient rods 40 to define the

The nut and bolt assemblies 42, which are operatively connected to the resilient rods 40, permit the rods to pivot with respect to each other and likewise can effect the securement of the rods in end to end relation, wherein the rods 40 may be bent into a circular supporting frame 48, Figure 6, for the circular canopy or cover I3. It is to be noted that the free end of the rod 40 is provided with an eye 49 which is detachably engageable about the nut 231d bolt assembly 42' carried by the resilient rod In Figures 10 and 11 there is shown still another modified form of the combination portable beach tent and umbrella of the present invention. In this modification, the flexible apron l2 and cover [3 are suspendingly supported from a supgort 50 by means of a plurality of suspension cords which has one end engageable in the ground, and a hanger arm 53 which projects from the standard 52 and is secured transversely thereof contiguous to the upper end of the standard 52. In Figure 12 there is shown still another form of-a combined portablebeachtent-andumbrella,

Whom-actually constructing the combination portable beach tent and umbrella of the present invention, the various aprons and covers may be made or silk, -cotton,textile, plastic or 'o'ther suitable material, while the various supports can 'be 1 made-of metal, Wood or=suitable plastic. A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a first group of rods arranged in endto-end spaced relation with respect to each other along one end of said body and supported thereon, a second group of rods arranged in end-to-end spaced relation with respect to each other along the other end of said body and supported thereon, the respective rods of said second group being disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the respective rods of the first group defining therebetween side panels, said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact substantially cylindrical formation, and a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure.

A combination portable beach tent and um-- brella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a fiexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a first group of rods arranged in end-to-end spaced relation with respect to each other along one end of said body and supported thereon, a second group of rods arranged in end-to-end spaced relation with respect to each other along the other end of said body and supported thereon, the respective rods of said second group being disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the respective rods of the first group defining therebetween side panels, said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact substantially cylindrical formation, a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure, and means carried contiguous to the lower ends of said panels and cooperating there with to form a pocket for the reception of ballast.

A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, a vertically disposed apron, interengaging means carried by said support and along the upper end of said apron for suspendingly supporting said apron from said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure withthe free side edges confronting each other, a group of rods arranged in end to end spaced relation with respect to each other along the upper end of said body and supported thereon, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure.

A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges confronting each other, a group of rods arranged in end-to-end spaced relation with respect to each other along the upper end of said body and supported thereon, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure, said support comprising a pair of upright rods arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, a first crossbar extending between said rods contiguous to the upper ends thereof and secured therebetween, and a second crossbar arranged intermediate the ends of said first crossbar and mounted on the latter at a point intermediate its ends for pivotal movement into and out of a position transverse of said first crossbar.

A combination beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a first group of resilient rods arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other and supported contiguous to and along the upper end of said body, bolt means operatively connected between adjacent ends of said rods for pivotally connecting same together for movement into confronting relation with respect to each other, a second group of rigid rods arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other along the 'lower end of said body and supported thereon,

the respective rods of said second group being disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the respective rods of said first group and defining therebetween side panels, said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact formation, means operatively connected to said bolt means for detachably securing said first group of rods in end-to-end relation, wherein said first group of rods form a circular supporting frame for said enclosure, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure and secured thereto.

A combination beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a first group of resilient rods arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other and supported contiguous to and along the upper end of said body, bolt means operatively connected between adjacent ends of said rods for pivotally connecting same together for movement into confronting relation with respect to each other, a second group of rigid rods arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other along the lower end of said body and supported thereon, the respective rods of said second group being disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the respective rods of said first group and defining therebetween side panels, said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact formation, and means operatively connected to said bolt means for detachably securing said first group of rods in end-to-end relation, wherein said first group of rods form a cir cular supporting frame for said enclosure, a cover bridging the upper open ends of said enclosure and secured thereto, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and interengaging means along said free side 9 edges for detachably securing said free side edges together.

A combination beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a first group of resilient rods arranged in endto-end relation with respect to each other and supported contiguous to and along the upper end of said body, bolt means operatively connected between adjacent ends of said rods for pivotally connecting same together for movement into confronting relation with respect to each other, a second group of rigid rods arranged in end-to-end relation with respect to each other along the lower end of said body and supported thereon, the respective rods of said second group being disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the respective rods of said first group and defining therebetween side panels, said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact formation, and means operatively connected to said bolt means for detachably securing said first group of rods in end-to-end relation, wherein said first group of rods form a circular supporting frame for said enclosure, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover bridging the upper open end of said enclosure and secured thereto, said support comprising a pair of upright rods arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, a first crossbar extending between said rods contiguous to the upper ends thereof and secured therebetween, a second crossbar arranged intermediate the ends of said first crossbar and mounted on the latter at a point intermediate its ends for pivotal movement into and out of a position transverse of said first crossbar.

10. A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a group of rods arranged in end-to-end aligned spaced relation with respect to each other along one end of said body and supported thereon, a cross brace detachably connected contiguous to the rods of said group and cooperating therewith to form a rectangular supporting frame for said enclosure, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover fabricated of resilient material bridging the upper open end of said enclosure and secured to said flexible body, said cover being foldable between said side panels and said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact substantially cylindrical formation.

11. A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dependingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side eges thereof confronting each other, a group of rods arranged in end-to-end aligned spaced relation with respect to each other along one end of said body and supported thereon, a cross brace detachably connected contiguous to the rods of said group and cooperating therewith to form a rectangular supporting frame for said enclosure, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, and a cover fabricated of resilient material bridging the upper open end of said enclosure and secured to said flexible body, said cover being foldable between said side panels and said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact substantially cylindrical formation, said support comprising a standard including an upright rod and a hanger arm projecting from said upright rod contiguous to the upper end thereof and secured thereto.

12. A combination portable beach tent and umbrella comprising an upstanding support, an apron dcpendingly carried by said support, said apron being fabricated of a flexible body and formed into an open-ended enclosure with the free side edges thereof confronting each other, a group of rods arranged in end-to-end aligned spaced relation with respect to each other along one end of said body and supported thereon, a cross brace detachably connected contiguous to the rods of said group and cooperating therewith to form a rectangular supporting frame for said enclosure, means carried contiguous the lower end of said body and cooperating therewith to form a pocket for the reception of ballast, a cover fabricated of resilient material bridging the upper open end of said enclosure and secured to said flexible body, said cover being foldable between said side panels and said side panels being foldable into abutting and confronting relation with respect to each other and rollable into a compact substantially cylindrical formation, said support comprising a standard including an upright rod and a hanger arm projecting from said upright rod contiguous to the upper end thereof and secured thereto, and a plurality of suspension cords carried by said hanger and connected to said enclosure contiguous to the corners of said supporting frame for suspendingly supporting said enclosure from said hanger arm.
