1 Claim.
This invention relates to traveling cases and has reference to an arrangement and construction for carrying suits, dresses, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved light construction for traveling cases wherein the frame members of the arrangement also provide supports for garments suspended therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a traveling case, a construction and arrangement whereby the frame members may be extended upwardly and outwardly upon opening the case for separating the garments to prevent unnecessary wrinkling or creasing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a relatively light and inexpensive construction for a traveling case which may be opened and extended, yet one which is neat and attractive in appearance.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, part of which is broken to accommodate Figure 2, and showing an embodiment of the invention in its closed position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the traveling case shown in Figure 1, but illustrating the same in its opened position.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the base and internal construction or frame of the traveling case and illustrating the same extended both upwardly and outwardly for suspending garments thereon.
Figure 4 is a broken elevational view of the hanger rod illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 where it is positioned between the vertical standards, and showing an arrangement of hangers thereon for folding and suspending garments within the case when the latter is in its retracted and closed position.
In the exemplary form of the invention shown, a traveling case embodying the features of the present invention includes a rectangular base I which may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, and is provided with vertical tubular standards 2 and 3 on opposite sides of the said base and intermediate the base ends. The
standards 2 and 3 may be provided with feet 4 a and 5 at the lower ends thereof for securing the said standards to the base by means of screws 6, as shown in Figure 2.
Upwardly directed standard extensions 1 and 8 are telescopically received within the tubular standards 2 and 3, respectively, and may be adjustably secured by means of thumb screws 9 and ID in each of the said tubular standards.
Between the upper ends of the extensions I and 8 there is a tubular hanger rod II which may be secured in place by suitable means, such as welding. Lateral extension rods l2 and I3 are slidably received within the hanger rod H and may be adjusted outwardly and secured independently of each other by means of thumb screws l4 and IS in said hanger rod.
Frame members l6 and I"! are respectively secured, as by welding, to each end of the tubular hanger rod II and are arranged above the sides of the base I and parallel therewith. As shown in Figure 2, the ends a and b of the frame members I6 and H are turned downwardly and are vertically disposed above each of the corners of the rectangular base I.
The fabric cover I8 is provided over the standards 2, hanger rod H, and pairs of frame members l6 and I1, and secured around its lower end to the base by suitable means. such as tacks (not shown), it being understood that the extensions 1 and. 8 and lateral rods l2 and I3 are in their retracted positions when the cover is so arranged. There is a slide fastener IS in the cover to divide the said cover into halves, and preferably the ends of the slide fastener l9 terminate at the sides of the base I intermediate the standards 2 and 3. Fabric handles 20 are provided on opposite sides of the assembled cover l8, as shown in Figure 1, and extend upwardly above the edges of the cover for conveniently lifting the closed traveling case. Preferably, the handles 20 are secured, as by sewing, to the sides of the case other than the sides in which the slide fastener is located.
In operation, garments 2| may be suspended upon conventional clothes hangers 22 which are supported upon the tubular hanger rod II, and which garments may be folded as shown in Figure 4, and supported by pairs of hangers 22 so as to prevent the garments from touching the base I. Upon opening the case and moving the divided cover I8 outwardly, as shown in Figure 2, the standard extensions '1 and 8 may be raised and secured as previously described, and the lateral extensions l2 and 13 may also be projected so as to accommodate the garments in separated relation to each other, and to allow each to hang its full length to prevent unnecessary wrinkling or creasing.
The form of the invention shown and described is not restrictive, but may be made in many ways within the scope of the appended claim.
ported by said standards, a horizontal hanger- 5 supporting rod connected with the upper ends of said standard extensions, lateral extension rods slidably "and horizontally supported by said hanger-supporting rod, frame members secured to the ends of said hanger-supporting rod and standard extensions, said han er-supporting 170d, said lateral extension rods, and said frame members when the same are in their retracted.posi '15 V 2,259,045"
