This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a music box cabinet.
More specically, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved cabinet which can be hung on a babys crib or bathinette or on a chair in close proximity to such articles of baby furniture for containing a babys toilet articles such as talcum powder, baby oil and the like and which includes a music box for playing a predetermined tune when the cabinet is opened for the removal of the toilet articles therefrom.
Still another object of the present invention proposes the formation of a cabinet consisting of a main body having hooks adjustably secured to the rear thereof in a manner to be used for supporting the cabinet at a desired elevation on a crib, bathinette, chair or other article of furniture.
Another object of the present invention proposes providing the main body internally with superimposed shelves upon which toilet articles can be placed to be readily accessible when a pair of pivotally mounted doors which normally close the open front of the main body have been pivoted to an open position.
A further object of the present invention proposes mounting the music box on the top oi the main body and to provide the music box with a movably mounted control plate which normally holds a spring pressed plunger in a raised position, but which plate can be pulled outward from the music box releasing the plunger to be resiliently urged downward so that the music box will be free to play its predetermined tune.
The present invention further proposes connecting a slidably mounted control member` to the control plate and which control member is resiliently urged in a direction to hold the control plate in a position in which it holds the spring pressed plunger raised in a manner to keep the music box from playing when both of the doors are in their closed position.
Still further, the present invention proposes arranging the doors of the cabinet so that the one door must be opened before the other door can be opened in a manner to obtain a desired operation of the music box.
Still another object of the present invention proposes providing the control plate with an elongated slot in alignmentA with the music box plunger in a manner so that as the control plate is moved outward the plunger will-be momentarily released and then raised again to shut oiT the music box aftersounding a short audible signal.
Another object of the present invention proposes the provision of a dashpot operated means controlled by the accidental opening of the said one cabinetdoor for slowly moving the control member and control slide in a manner to cause the slot of the control slide to move slowly past the lower end of the plunger to sound the audible signal and draw attention to accidentally opened cabinet door.
A further object of the present invention proposes the provision of means controlled by the other of the cabinet doors, when both of the doors are being opened, and which functions completely independently of the dashpot operated means referred to in the paragraph next above to move the control slide to completely withdraw the control plate and release the plunger so that the music box will be freed to play its predetermined tune.
It is a further object of the present invention to construct a cabinet of the type referred to which is simple and durable, which is effective for its intended purposes and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

The cabinet, according to the present invention, includes a main body l constructed to have a rear wall a top wall VI, a bottom wall i3 and spaced side walls I9. The main body I5 has an open side which is considered to be an open front side which is normally closed by a pair of adjacent doors 2li and 2l. The doors 20 and 2i are supported to swing open and close-d positions on hinges 2?.. The hinges 22 are secured to the cuter edges of the doors 2t and 2| and the front vertical edges of the side walls I9. The
inner edge of the door 2| carries a projectingl portion sie which is overlapped, in the closed position of the doors shown in Figs. 1 and 6', by a complementary projecting portion 26a of the door 2li which requires that the door 2D be opened before the door 2i can be opened'. Conversely, the projecting portions Ztla and ZI@ require that the door 2i be completely closed, when both of the doors are being closed.
Means is provided for holding the doors 2i) and ZI in their closed position and structural de tails of such means as it is applied to the door im are shown in Fig. 5 and it is understood that similar means are used on the door 2I. The door holding means comprises a small tubular casing which is .iixedly mounted within a hole 2li extended in from the bottom edge of the door 2d adjacent its free inner vertical edge. The casing 23 slidably supports a small plunger 2. which is urged to an Yextended position by an expansion spring 2t contained in the casing The extended end of the plunger '.25 is rounded and is received within a keeper element 'il for holding the respective door 2li or 2i in its closed position. The keeper elements 2l for the doors 2B and EZI are mounted ona forwardly projected ledge Illa of the bottom wall I8 which is located beneath the doors 2i) and 2l. As the doors Ed and 2i are opened and closed, the plungers 25 snap into and out of the keeper element 2l against the holding action of the springs 2t. Knobs 28 are mounted on the outer faces of the doors and 2i by which the doors can be pivoted between open and closed positions against the holding action of the spring pressed plung ers 25.
Superimposed shelves 29 are mounted within the cabinet for having babys toilet articles such as cans of talcurn powder, bottles of baby y oil, containers of cotton and the like-placed thereon. The shelves 29 are adjustably positioned within the main body I5 of the cabinet by having their ends rested on pegs 3i] selecm tively engageable with aligned sets of complementary holes 3l formed in the inner facesrof the side walls i9, see Figs. 2 and 4. Shifting the vertical positions of the shelves 29 within the main body I5 varies their vertical spacing to aocommodate articles of different heights.
Hooks 32 are attached to therear wall I5 of the main body I5 and project above the top of the cabinet to be used for supporting the cabinet on a babys crib, bathinette or on a chair in close proximity to such articles of baby furniture so that the articles contained in the cabinet will be readily available for use when bathing or changing the baby. At their bottom ends behind the main body I5 of the cabinet, the hooks 32 are formed with flattened portions 33 each formed with a pair of holes for the passage of screws 34. The outer face of the rear wall I6 of the main body i5 is formed with verti-cal sets of spaced holes 35 matching the spacing of the screw holes of the flattened portions 334.v The holes 35 the wall 3Ll can be omitted if desired.
are provided for selectively receiving the screws to vary the attachment of the hooks 32 to the rear wall I6 of the cabinet and so support the cabinet at the desired elevation on the piece of baby furniture.
Fixedly mounted within the main body I5 slightly below the top wall il there is a parti tion 3b which divides orf a compartment 3l for a music box .t8 and its control mechanism. The front of the compartment 3l is closed by a wall iii) for hiding the music box 38 and its control -mechanism when the doors E6 and El are in the open position shown in Figs. 2 and 9. However, The wall is preferably formed with a plurality of vertically spaced horizontally elongated slots 40 forl permitting the music from the music boi: 38 to emanate from the compartment si in the open position of the doors 20 and 2l.
The music box 33 is mounted on the inner face of the toplwall il of 'themain body I5 midway between the side walls IS. `The music box is of conventional construction andv includes the usual spring motor, not showin'. for4 turning a drum, not shown, having a pluralityof radially extended pins ior plucking the tines of a music comb, not shown, for playing a predetermined tune which in the present case might-be a nursery rhyme set to music, a lullaby or similar musical tune. Construction details of the spring' motor, drum and music comb arenot given in this specincation as such details are generally known in the art and form no part of the present invention. The usual key 4i for winding the spring of the music box 33 is exe posed through the top wallI'I of the main body so that the music box 33 can be wound up: without having to open the doors 2li and 2l The music box 38 includes the usual vertically slidable plunger 42 lwhich is resiliently urged downward by a spring 43, see Fig. '7. When'the plunger 42 is in its lowered position the music box 38 is free to play its predetermined tune. On the other hand, when the plunger 42 is'raised against the action of the spring 43, the music box is shut oil or inoperative. The music box 35 has spaced superimposed bottom walls 44 and 45 which form between them a slideway 45 for a control plate 4l. The bottom of the plunger 42 is exposed through a hole 48 in the bottom wall d4 to be engaged by the control plate 4l. When the control plate 4l is pushed completely inward, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the control plunger :l2 is held in a raised position against the action oi the spring .43 to keep the music box 3B inoperative or shut cil. On thecther hand, when the control plate 4l is pulled outward so that its inner end passes the plunger 42, as shown in Fig. 9, the plunger 42 is freed to be urged downward by respective spring 43 to free the music box Eil to play its predetermined tune. Musicv'boxes having spring pressed plungers arranged as de-V scribed are in common use in the so called musi cal powder boxes, perfume atomizers and similar articles whereinY the music boxes are released to play the moment they are picked up oit the surfaces on which they are resting.
At one point adjacent its free inner edge and in alignment with the bottom end of the plunger i252, the control plate 4l is formed with an elongated slot 49. The slot 49 stops short oi the inner edge of the control plate 4l and is provided for a purpose to be described as this specification proceeds.
Attached. to the control plate 41, there is'a control member 50 for moving the control plate 41 and which is resiliently urged to a position in which the control plate 41 is completely pushed inward to hold the plunger 42 in its raised inoperu ative position. The control member 50 is of U- shape and has one long arm ta, a short arm b and an intermediate arm 50G. The free end oi the short arm b of the control member 50 is secured to the projected end of the control plate 41 by means of a pin 5l. The long arm Eila of the control member 50 is slidably supported in complementary brackets 52 which extends forn wardly from the rear wall lli of the main body l5. Extending rearward from the long arm 50e at a point between the brackets 52, there is'a pin 53. A similar pin 54'is mounted on the rear wall I6 between the brackets 52.' A contraction spring 55 has its ends attached to the pins 53 and 54 urging the control member 54 in a direction in which the control plate 41 will be in its fully pushed in position shown 'in Figs. 6 and 7. The spring 55 is a relatively weak one and exerts a force just suflicient to push the control plate 41 completely inward against the action of the spring 43 of the plunger 42. Y
Means is 'provided and controlled by accidental opening or improper closing of the door for moving the control member 50 against the action of the spring 55 to cause the control plate 41 to be moved outward passing its slot 48 beneath the plunger 42 to momentarily release the music box to sound an audible signal to draw attention to the door 29. IThe means functions to stop the control plate 41 inthe position shown in Fig. 8, in which the material of the control plate 41 between its free inner edge and the adjacent end of the slot 49 will raise the plunger 42 and shut off the music box 38 so that it will not play itself out with only the door 20 in its open position.
The means referred to in the paragraph next above consists of a bell crank 56 which is pivotally supported at the junction of its arms on a boss 51 by means of a'pin Eil. The boss 51 extends upward from the top face of the partition 36. One arm 56e of the bell crank 56 is engaged at its free end behind the free end of the long arm Ella of the control member 5B. The other arm 55h of the bell crank 56 is extended through an elongated horizontal slot 5s formed in the wall 39 so that the free end of the arm 56b is engaged by the inner face of the door 2li. A contraction spring Hl operates between a pin El mounted on the adjacent bracket 52 and the free end of the arm 5ta of the bell crank 5t. The spring 66 is of a tension slightly greater than the tension of the spring 55 but of insufficient tension to open the door 2d vagainst the action ci its holding means.
When the door 2li is closed, the door functions to hold the bell crank 5E in thev pivoted position shown in Fig. 6 against the tension of the spring Sli. That position of the bell crank 56 leaves the spring 55 to urge the control member 50 to a position in which the control plate 41 will retain the music box 38 in its oi position; the position shown in Figs. 6 and 7. v
On the other hand, ii the door 2D should be accidentally opened or be improperly closed, the tension of the spring 60 will pivot the bell crank 55 to the position shown in Fig. 8 in which the free end of the arm 58h will be extended through the slot 59. Such movement of the bell crank 56 will cause the arm ato slide the control member 50 against the action of its spring 55 and pull outward on the control slide 41.
During such outward movement, the slot 59 of the control plate 41 moved beneath the plunger 42'rncmentarily releasing the plunger 42 to move downward under the action of its spring 43 momentarily releasing the music box 33 to sound a short audible signal drawing attention to the accidentally opened or improperly closed door 2t.
.Means is provided in connection with the bell crank 56 for delaying the action of the spring @il and for stopping the movement ci' the bell cranlr 53 in a position in which the control plate fil will have its material between its inner edge and the inner end of the slot 49 immediately below the bottom end of the plunger 42 raising that plunger to shut on the music box 3S after the short warning signal has been sounded. That delaying and stopping means comprises a dashpot 62 having a hollow casing iixedly mounted on the partition 3e. Slidabiy disposed within the casing there is a piston from which a concentric rod projects to the exterior of the casing 33. The :free end of the rod d 'carries a pin 5B which engages an elongated slot 5"! formed in. the arm 5ta of the bell crank.. The Vpin and slot function to connect the bell crank and the rod G5 so that pivotal movements of the bell crank will cause the piston 64 to be moved to and iro within the casing The piston 54 is formed with large holes (i8 for the passage oi air as the piston G4 moves back and forth within the casing t3. Fixedly secured to theface of the piston $4 remote from the side from which the rod 65 extends, there is a flexible member 69 of rubber or other exible material. The flexible member B9 is formed with holes 1li aligned with the holes 63 of the piston G4. The holes 1B are of a smaller diameter than the diameter of the holes t8, as clearly shown. in 6, 8, and 9. The casing $3 on the-side oi the piston 54 remote from the iiexibie member is formed with holes for insuring that the pis ton e4 'will not become air locked within the oasing When the rod $5 is pushed inward under the action of the spring @il which pivots the bell crank 5t, the flexible member Se will be forced against the adjacent face of the piston 54 so that the small holes 1li oi the iiexible member will restrict the iiow of air through the larger holes 68 of the piston E4. That will cause the piston 54 to move slowly within the casing E3 causing the bell crank lili to be slowly pivoted by the spring S0 to slowly push the control mernber 5l! against the action of its spring 55. The control plate 41 will be slowly pulled out so that the slot 4i? will move slowly past the lower end o the plunger 42 insuring that the plunger will be lowered a sufficient length of time affording the music box .38 an ample opportunity to sound the audible alarm. When the piston 64 reaches the other end oi the casing (53, as shown in Fig. the action of the spring @il will be arrested stopping the outward movement of the control plate 4l in the position shown in that Fig. 8 in which the material of the plate between its inner end and the adjacent end of the slot 4t will be below the plunger 42. That will cause the plunger 42 to be raised against the action of the spring 43 to shut oiT the music box 33 notwithstanding that the door 2S is still open. Thus. the music box will be restrained from completely unwinding itself with only the one door open.
When the door 20 is vproperly closed, the bell v'crank 56 will be pivoted against the action of the spring back to the position shown in Fig. 6.
7, Dn that return movement of the bell crank: the air passing through the holes lili oi the piston E13 blows the peripheral edges oi the flexible member 69 away from the adjacent face of the piston lill so that the air will pass rapidly through those holes permitting the piston 64 to slide freely with* in the cylinder 63 on the back movement oi the bell crank. Such back movement of the bell crank 55 released the control member Eil] to be urged back. by its spring 55 to return the control plate 4'1 to its starting position shown in 6.
Arranged to be controlled by the door 2 l, there is means to release the plunger 52 to free the music box 33 to play its predetermined tune long as its spring is under tension, when both of the doors 2U and 2l are opened, for the removal of the babys toilet articles from the interior oi the cabinet. The means controlled by the door 2| includes a bell crank l2 which is pivoted at the junction of its arms '12e and '12b by means oi a pin 13 upon a boss 'I4 which extends upward from the partition 3G. The free end or" the arm 12' of the bell crank .'2 underlies the intermediate arm Sile of the control member 5t and carries an upstanding peg 'lli which is engaged behind that intermediate arm C.
A rod 15 is longitudinally slidably supported in brackets 'Il which extend upward from the parti-- tion 3E. An intermediate portion oi the rod il? overlies the free end of the arm 12b oi the bell. crank. The rod 'I6 is formed with a depending pin T8 which engages an elongated, slot 'lil formed in the arm 'l2b of the bell crank 'l2 for causing the bell crank. l2 to be pivoted in one direction or the other as the rod 16 is moved in and out.
The front end oi the rod l@ is extended ib a complementary aperture till formed ir 39 so that the front oi that rod will be engaged by the inner face oi the door 7.2i to hold the rod in a pushed in position, Figs. G and 8, when the door 2l is closed. 'lio r the pin 18, the rod 'IB is formed with nten gral collar 8i and an expansion spring 32 is enn gaged about the rod l5 operates between the adjacent faces of the collar and the adn jacent bracket ll' to cause the front end of the rod to be projected through the aperture il@ when the door 2 i is opened, see 9.
The expansion spring Si. is similar to the spring 69 in that it has a tension greater than the tension of the spring so that it is capable of overcoming that spring 55 and move the conn trol member 5Fl. However, the spring i2 does not exert a force sufficient to open the door El against action of the means which holds that door closed.
When the door 2| is opened, it being appre-n ciated of course that the door 2B must be opened first, the spring S2 will immediately function to extend the rod l to the position shown in Fig. 9. That action will pivot the bell cranli l2 causn ing the peg l5 to pull on the control member 5l) against the action of its spring 55 `and pull the control plate 41 out to the position shown in Fig. 9. The plunger 42 will be completely re leased and free the music box to play its preden termined tune' as long as its self -contained spring is under tension and the doors 2@ and ill rem main open. When the door was opened, the bell crank 56 was moved. by its spring to the no" sition shown in Fig. 9, but that bell crank was inoperative to move the control plate dl as the same was moved to its fully extended position by the action of the bell crank l2.
When the doors 2l and 20 are reclosed in that succession, the bell cranks 'I2 and 5E will be plvoted back to their starting position shown in Fig. 6 freeing the control member 50 to be urged bacia'. to its starting position by the spring 55 pushing in on the control side 41 to shut off the music box 38.
From the foregoing description., it is apparent that the present invention proposes a novel cabinet for mounting upon a babys crib, bathinette or 'other article of furnture for conveniently containing all of the toilet articles required when bathing or changing the baby. However, while the features of the present invention are described in connection with a cabinet for containing a babys toilet articles that is by way of illustration only as those features can be incorporated in any desired type of cabinet or other Varticles of furniture having openable doers without departing from the scope and intent of the present disclosure.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise method herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications comwithin the scope of the invention as deiined in. the appended claims.
if-laying thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United Letters Patent is:
l. A cabinet of the class described, comprising main body, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, a music box mounted within the top porn tion of said main body having a spring pressed plunger urged in a direction to free said music box to play, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger a position in which said music box is inoperative, :and a spring pressed plunger means controlled by opening of at least one of said doors to move downwardly and free said plunger to release said music box to play at least a portion of its predetermined tune.
2. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body having a spring pressed plunger urged in a direction to free said music box to play, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a position in which said music box is inoperative, and a spring pressed plunger means controlled by opening of at least one of said doors to move downwardly and free said plunger to release said music box to play at least a portion of its predetermined tune, and means holding said doors in their closed position.
3. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body having a spring pressed plunger urged in a direction to free said music box to play, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a position in Which said music box is inoperative, and a spring pressed plunger means controlled by opening of at least one of said doors to move downwardly and free said plunger to release said music box to play at least a portion of its predetermined tune, and knobs mounted on said doors providing a grip for opening the same.
4. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an openside, a pair of adiacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward freeing said music box to play a predeu termined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidable mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a' position inwhich said control plate retains said plungery in a raised position, means controlled by accidental openingr of said one door for moving said control member to in turn move said controllplate to free and again raise said plunger to cause said music box to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to move said control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune.
5. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an open side, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward freeing said music box to play a predetermined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidably mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a position in which said control plate retains said plunger in a raised position, means controlled by accidental opening of said one door lor moving said control member to in turn move said control plate to free and again raise said plunger to cause said music box to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to move said control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune, and means holding said doors in a closed position against the actions of said door controlled means.
6. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an open side, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward ireeing said music box to play a predetermined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said `music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidably mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a position in which said control plate retains said plunger in a raised position, means controlled by accidental opening of said one door for moving said control member to in turn move said control plate to free and again raise said plunger to cause said music box to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to movesaid control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune, said rst door controlled means including an elongated slot in said control plate aligned with said plunger and a spring pressed pivotally mounted bell crank operating between the said one door and said control member.
7. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an open side, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward freeing said music box to play a predetermined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidably mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a position in which said control plate retains said plunger in a raised position, means controlled by accidental opening of said one door for moving said control member to in turn move said control plate to free and again raise said plunger to cause said music box 'to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to move said control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune, said nrst door controlled means including an elongated slot in said control plate aligned with said plunger and a spring pressed pivotally mounted bell crank operating between the said one door and said control member, and a dash pot means restricting the movement of said bell crank when pivoted to move said control plate to free said plunger.
8. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an open side, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closing the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music box mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward freeing said music box to play a predetermined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidably mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a position in which said control plate retains said plunger in a raised position, means controlled by accidental opening of said one door for moving said control member to in turn move said control plate to free and again raise said plunger to cause said music box to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to move said control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune, said latter mentioned door controlled means including a spring pressed slidably mounted rod and a pivotally mounted bell crank operating between said rod and said slidably mounted control member, said rod being rotatively retained in an inoperative position by the said other door when in its closed position.
9. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a main body having an open side, a pair of adjacent pivotally mounted doors closingr the open side of said main body, said doors being restricted so that one door must be opened before the other door can be opened, a music boX mounted within the top portion of said main body and having a spring pressed plunger which moves downward freeing said music box to play a predetermined tune, a control plate slidably mounted in said music box and normally holding said plunger in a raised position in which said music box is inoperative, a slidably mounted control member connected to said control plate and resiliently urged to a position in which said control plate retains said plunger in a raised position, means controlled by accidental opening of said one door for moving said control member to in turn move said controlplate to free and again raise said 12 plunger to cause said music box to sound a short audible warning signal to draw attention to the doors, and means controlled by said other door when both of said doors are opened to move said control member to withdraw said control plate and release said plunger freeing said music box to play its predetermined tune, said music box and its related control means being mounted within la compartment in the top of said main body divided off by a xedly mounted partition Within said main body.
