Feb. 2, 1954 c. R. CORNICK COMBINED STOOL. AND CABINET Filed May 4, 1951 Gamhg/an Corn/ck INVENTOR.
l8 EY BY a Patented Feb. 2, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE COMBINED STOOL AND CABINET Carrington R. Cornick, Richmond, Va. Application May 4, 1951, Serial No. 224,559
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in articles of furniture and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a combination stool and cabinet.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a cabinet having an open top and a vertically adjustable horizontally disposed shoe rest panel that is selectively supported concealed in or exposed from the open top of the cabinet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combined stool and cabinet including an article holding rack or drawer that is manually movable into and out of the cabinet through and opening in one side wall of the cabinet.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a combination stool and cabinet that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention showing the drawer disposed in the cabinet and the closure in its closed position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the closure raised, the drawer in its open position and the shoe rest raised;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 33 of Figure 4 Figure 4 i a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 55 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view showing the guide grooves in slightly modified form than illustrated in Figures 1-5 inelusive.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I 0 represents a combined stool and cabinet, including a pair of upwardly converging side walls I2 and I4 that are joined at their ends by end walls It and I 8.
2 Claims. ((31. 15265) A- closure wall 26 is hinged, as at 22, to the upper end of the wall 18 for vertical swinging movement. The free end of the closure wall 25 carries a spring clip 24 that will yieldingly enter a U-shaped keeper 26 mounted on the inner face of the Wall l6 when the closure member 25] is disposed in its closed position against the upper edges of the walls. I2, l4, l6 and I8.
An arm 28 is pivoted to the closure wall 20 and this arm is slidably received between a pair of guide blocks 30 and 32 secured to the inner face of side wall l2. The free end of the arm 28 terminates in a hook 34 that will engage the undersurface of block 36 after the closure wall 20 has been raised to a vertical position a shown in Figure 2.
Side wall I4 is formed with an opening 36 whose lower edge is hinged to a drawer or rack 38, as at 40, for movement into and out of the cabinet through opening 36. The inner wall 42 of the drawer 38 is slightly higher than the opening to abut the wall l4 when the drawer is manually moved to its open position as shown in Figure 2. The inner wall 42 will rest against a cross brace 44 when the drawer is disposed in the cabinet to retain the outer wall 46 coplanar with wall M a shown best in Figure 4.
A pair of blocks 48 are suitably secured to the side walls l2 and [4 adjacent the end wall l6. The inner faces of the blocks 48 are formed with V-shaped grooves including upper horizontal portions 56 and vertically inclined portions 52 that incline upwardly from the wall l6 toward closure wall 20.
One end of an elongated panel 54 supports a cross pin 56 whose ends are slidably received in the V-shaped grooves. The panel 54 supports a shoe rest 58 that is removably secured to the panel 54. A shelf extends between and is suitably secured to the side walls I2 and I4, and will support the panel 54 concealed within the cabinet when the ends of pin 56 are disposed in the lower ends of groove portions 52.
As the panel 54 is raised to position the ends of pin 56 in the groove portions 50, the rabbeted end 62 of the panel 54 will rest upon the upper edge of wall 18 to support the panel 54 exposed from the upper end of the cabinet.
Figure 6 shows the grooves in the blocks 48 shaped in the form of Us to include upper and lower horizontal portions 64 and 66 that will selectively receive the ends of pin 56 when the panel 54 is moved to a raised or lowered position in the cabinet.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a shoe shine cabinet including a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls, said cabinet having an open top, an elongated shoe rest panel slidably received in the open top of the cabinet, blocks secured to said side walls each having a V-shaped groove therein, means carried by one end of the panel slidably received in the grooves, said grooves being so located to include horizontal portions and vertically inclined portions extending downwardly from the horizontal portions, the end of said panel remote from the means being supported on one of said end walls when said means is disposed in said horizontal I portions, and a shelf secured to said one end wall for supporting the panel when said means is disposed at the lower ends of saidrvertically inclined portions, and a vertically swingable closure hinged to ,one of said ,end walls for closing the open top of the cabinet, and means limiting opening of said closure. 7 e
2. In a shoe shine cabinet including a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls, said cabinet having an open top, an elongated shoe rest panel slidably received in the open top of the cabinet, blocks secured to said side walls each having a V-shaped groove therein, means carried by one end of the panel slidably received in the Lil grooves, said .grooves being so located to include horizontal portions and vertically inclined portions extending downwardly from the horizontal portions, the end of said panel remote from the means being supported on one of said end walls when said means is disposed in said horizontal portions, and a shelf secured to said one end wall for supporting the panel when said means is disposed at the lower ends of said vertically inclined portions, and v a vertically swingable closure hinged to one of said lend walls ,for closing the open top of the cabinet, and means limiting opening of said closure, said means limiting opening of said closure comprising an arm pivoted to the closure and having a terminal hook, a pairof guide blocks in the cabinet slidably receiving the arm, said hook engaging one of said blocks as the closure is open.
