2 Claims. (Cl. 153-2) invention relates tonew and useful improvements in ruling devices and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a cuiv rule for the marking of'trouser pants so thatnthe same may be formed into cuffs of variouswidths.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a cuff rule so that trouser .pants may be marked andfolded into cuffs in a convenient and practical manner.

iurtherobject of the present invention is to provide a flat elongated body member having a series of longitudinally spaced transverse'slots therein whose edges coact in forming spaced parallel lines when a chalk or marking device is placed thereagainst so that a trouser leg may be folded into a four layer cuff.

A still lfurther aim-of lthe present invention is to provide a cuff rule that is simple and practical in; construction, strongand reliable in use, efficient and durable in operation, inexpensive t manufacture and utilize, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

aOtlier objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation aslmore fully hereinafter described andclaimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like partsthroughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the present cuff rule;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a plan View showing the present invention in use for laying off the desired lines on a trouser leg;

Figure 4 is a diagrammatic View showing the manner in which the material is initially folded 'into the cuff; and

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but showing the completed cuff. j

Referring now to the drawings in details; wherein for the purposes of illustration there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I0 represents an elongate, hat, substantially rectangular body member of any suitable material, such as plastic, metal or the like, which includes straight longitudinal side edges I2 and I4, and straight transverse end edges I6 and I8. Scales 20 and 22 are provided on the body member along the edges I2 and I4, and the scales each include longitudinally spaced transverse lines with adjacent lines spaced apart one-eighth of an inch and with each inch noted by a number or ligure.

One end portion of the body memberA I0 is formed with three longitudinally spaced transe verseslots'comprising an outer slot 24, an intermediate slot26 andan inner slot 28 that are progressively increased in the order'named. The slots 24, 26 and'28 include forwardstraight edges 30, 32 and,34,`respectively, and rear edges 36, 38 and 40, respectively. The edges 30, 32, 34,

36, 38 and 40 are parallel to each other and also I8 is formed with three longitudinally spaced transversely extending openings or slots 42, 44 and 46 that are provided with outer spaced parallel edges 48, 56 and 52, respectively, and inner spaced parallel edges 54, 56' and 58, respectively.

The edges 48, 50, 52, 54, 56 and 58 are spacedA parallel to each other andk parallel the edge I8.

Edge 48 is spaced 11/2ll from edge I8, edge 5I) is spaced '1l/2 from edge 48 and edge 52 Yis spaced 11/2" from edge v5I). Edge 54 is spaced 2H from edge I8, edge 56 is spaced 2l from edge 54 and edge 58 is spaced 2 from edge 56.

In laying out regular cuffs of 11A", the end edge I6 is placed coincident with the line drawn on the pants 'to represent the nal length of) the pants as shown in Figure 3. Then, a scriber is moved along edges 30, 32 and" 34 and the pants leg is cut off along the line coincident with edges 34.

If the regular cui is to be 1%", the edge I6 again is placed along the line on the pants leg representing the length of the pants leg and a scriber is moved along edges 36, 38 and 40, with the pants leg cut off along the line coincident with edge 40.

The other end of rule I0 is employed for laying off cuffs of 11/2" and 2 with edges 48, 50 and 52 being used with edge I8 for 1%" cuffs and the edges 54, 56 and 58 being used with edge I8 for laying off 2" cuffs.

For use in laying off French cuirs or imitation cuffs, the desired length of pants is determined and a mark placed on the pants at the desired length by a pencil or tailors chalk. One longitudinal edge of the rule is employed with the chalk to make a straight line across the top and underside of the pants leg, as indicated by line 2 in Figure 3.

Then, the size ofthe cuff desired is determined,

and the cui rule is placed on this line. 'I'he side of the rst opening which is marked by the size of the cuff wanted is placed on this line 2, and the cui rule extends above line 2 with the end edge of the rule above line 2, or the line actually indicating the length desired for the pants.

Next, the chalk is moved along theinside of the openings and more particularlygalong{theedges of the openings marked by the size of the cuis wanted, and the chalk is also moved along the top edge of the rule which is disposed above line 2 so lthat spaced lines or marks will be on the pants leg. I
