Description

Patented May 29, )1923.
NETE@ STATES EDWARD GRUBER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TAILORS RULE.
Application led .Tune 21, 1921.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. (rRUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tailors Rules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rules and more particularl to a rule designed for tailors use in cutting trousers.
With the present type of rules or tape used by tailors a number of different measurements must be made to properly cut the lengths and form the cuff of a pair of trousers and it is an object of the present invention to provide a rule structure with which the proper lengths of trousers and lengths of the various folds of the cuff may be marked by a single measurement thereby eliminating work and time as well as per-v mitting maximum accuracy in the marking of the trousers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rule as specified which is adjustable as to lengt-h so as to permit the accurate cutting of various lengths trousers with a single rule and also a plurality of heads by means of which an ordinary cuff, a false cuff or a straight bottom may be marked for the trousers.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved rule.
Fi 2 is a, fragmentary front elevation showing the rule partly adjusted.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a modified form of head used for marking plain bottom trousers.
Fig. 7 is a lan view of a head for markfalse cu s.
ferring more particularly to the drawi the improved rule comprises a main bo 1 formed of any suitable material and graduated on one surface alon one edge as shown at 2 while the remaimng portion 3 of the surface on which the graduations are marked is blank and is adapted to receive suitable advertising matter. The body Serial No. 479,330.
1 is provided with a longitudinally extending ovetail groove 4 in its side opposite to the side upon which the graduations 2 are formed and the dovetail groove 4 receives therein a sliding rule 5 which is graduated as shown at 6 on its surface fac.- ing the graduated surface of the body 1. A head 7 is carried by the upper end of the sliding rule 5 and extends transversely of the body 1 having its upper edge 8 concavely curved to conform to the curvature of the crotch of trousers to permit the proper measuring of various lengths of the legs of a pair of trousers and a head 8 is graduated, intermediate its ends as shown at 9, which graduations co-operate with the graduations 6. The end of the rule body 1, remote from the head 7, is reduced in thickness as shown at 10 and extends into a suitab-le groove 11 formed in the head 12. The t pe of head 12 illustrated in Fig. 1 of the rawing is designed to permit proper marking of the ends of the trousers for forming cuffs thereon and it comprises substantially three portions 13, 14 and 15, all of equal lengths and the widths of each are proper for marking the widths of the portions of cuffs upon trousers. The sections 13 and 14 are provided with cutoutI portions 16, intermediate their ends and at their ends, along their lower edges which cutout portions provide space for permitting the marking, with tailors chalk, on the goods from which the trousers are to be made. The head l2 has a binder strip 17 attached thereto in any suitable manner which prevents lateral movement of the reduced end 10 of the body 1 relative to the head 12 when inserted in the recess 11.
The head structure 18 illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing is designed for use in marking straight bottom trousers and it comprises a single member recessed as indicated at 19 to receive the reduced end 10 of the body 1 and is shaped to provide the proper formation for straight bottom trousers. The type of head 20 shown in Figr 7 of the dra-wing is designed for ma-rkin what is commercially known as false Cu and comprises sect- ions 21,22, and 23 similar to the sections 13, 14 and 15, however the section 21 is narrower than the central section 22 and also than the corresponding seotion 13 on the head 12 but in other respects the head is similar to the head 7.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore. I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a tailors rule an elongated graduated body, a graduated rule slidably carried thereby, a cross head carried by one end of said sliding rule and having its outer 10 edge concavely curved` and a trousers bottom marking head removably carried by said body` and comprising a plurality of connected portions for marking the various folds of a trouser cuil'.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD A. GRUBER.
