This invention pertains to a measuring device, and, more particularly to a tailors measure for determining desired lengths of wearing apparel.
One object of the invention is the provision of mated measuring and marking appliances designed for facilitating the measuring of the length of trousers and. the cuffs thereof and the folding of the cuff portion to provide the proper trouser length in the finished garment.
Another object of the invention is to construct the said mated appliances in such manner that the one is utilized without the slightest discomfort to the fittee to mark a trouser leg at an arbitrarily fixed distance from the floor, and the other by alignment with the marking is precisely positioned for marking the exactly correct fold lines for the cuffs of the trousers.
A further object of the invention is to prov de for adjusting the first said appliance to mark the trousers at a point closer to or further from the floor to accommodate persons who do not desire their trouser cuffs to be located at what is generally considered to be the fashionable height above the floor.
Still another object of the invention 15 to construct the first said appliance in such manner that the same is also utilizable for marking the hem lines of ladies skirts and the. cuff line of boys trousers.

(0]. 33-2) construction of both appliances of the invention before attempting to describe the function of either. Referring to Figs. 1-4, there is illustrated a standard H] which comprises a foot piece II surmounted by a rectangular bar l2 having one broad face aligned with the high end of foot piece I I. Preferably the foot piece II and bar l2 are formed of hardwood. At its upper end the bar I2 tapers slightly in width and is provided in I each side edge with upper and lower notches l3,
said notches being located the same distance apart vertically as the upper one is spaced below the flat upper edge of the bar.
Extending downward from the upper edge of the bar is a wedge-shaped groove l4 having the narrow side thereof open to the rear face of the bar. Mounted in the said groove for sliding movements up and down is a wedge-shaped block l5 Whose upper edge is normally aligned with the upper edge of the bar. One side edge of bar I2 is notched to receive a cover plate I6 for a ver-' tical groove I! in the said notched edge, said plate being held in place by suitable screws l8. Near its upper end plate l6 and bar I2 are provided with aligned short vertical slots 20 through which a wing head screw 2| passes into the lower end of block I5 in which it is threaded. Screw 2|, it will readily be seen, effectively locks block I5 in any desired vertical position. Below the slot 20 plate I6 is provided with a long vertical slot 22 through which passes the shank of a bolt 23 having its head located in the groove I1 and having a cylindrical nut-like handle 24 threaded on its outer end. The handle 24 is locked in any desired vertical position by drawing the same up on bolt 23 against plate I6. Located in the front face of bar I2 is a horizontal groove 25 which extends also across one side edge of the bar, said groove being identified by the letter B. Other identifying letters S for shorter and L for longer are situated alongside of arrows ZBimprinted on the front face of bar l2 near the upper end thereof and pointing upward and downward, respectively.
The cooperating appliance of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 and comprises a T- shaped template 2'! of plastic or fibre board or the like. At the juncture of the upright and the cross bar of the template the upright is provided at either edge with a notch 28. upright of the template is inclined somewhat so that the free end thereof is located a short distance forward of its juncture with the cross bar. Also, the under edges of the cross bar incline away from the notches 28. The far edge 29 of the cross bar and also the free edge'of the up- As shown, the
right are at right angles to a perpendicular between the two. A lateral slot 311 is located in the cross bar of the template and the edge 3| thereof nearest the notches 28 is located equidistant between said notches and the distant edge 29 of the cross bar.
Men's trouser cuffs generally are formed as shown in Fig. 7. The material 33 of the trouser leg is turned up at 34 which point determines the lower edge of the cuff, extendsv upward to 35 where it is turned downward again, point 35 forming the upper limit of the cuff, and then extends downward to 36 around the point 34,
and ends within the trouser leg a. short distance above point 36. The distance between points 34 and 35 and 35, that is, the vertical dimension of the cuff, is the same in all but, a few instances; and the distances between the notches 28 and a chalk mark is made at the other edge of the slot to indicate the point at which the material is to end.
Standard 19 is also utilized for marking the hem line of mens or ladies overcoats or a ladys skirt. This is accomplished by setting the handle 25 at the desired height and marking the garment in alignment therewith.
The notch 25 identified by the letter B may be utilized in.- the tailoring or boys," trousers or ladies slacks either in combination with a template 27 having an appropriately shorter upright or with the slot edge 3! and between the latter and the.
far edge 29 of the cross bar of the template are made equal thereto, Therefore, if the template is.'1aid..on-a trouser leg and chalk marks are made at the matches 8 (for fold 35). the edge 3i (forfold 35 and the edge 29- (for fold 36), a perfect cuff will result when the material is folded at the chalk lines. It is not only necessary to form a perfect cufi, but it is also necessary to locate the under edge 34, 36 of the same at the proper distance above the floor when the trousers are worn. This is accomplished as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The person. on whom the trousers are being fitted stands alongside the standard it and a chalk mark 3.? is made on the trouser leg 38 in alignment with the upper edge of bar i2. In forming thecuffs of the trousers, the end edge of the upright of template 21 which may conveniently be provided with a notched corner to indicate the forward end thereof is aligned with the chalk marl; 3? before making the above-described cuff fold marks. The length of the upright oi the template between the notches 28 and the end edge thereof is shorter than the height of the upper edge of bar i2 above the ground by a distance equal to the amount that it is desired the lower edge of the cuif be located above the ground. Thus, when the chalk mark is made on the trouser leg 33 in alignment with the notches 28 to indicate the location of fold 34 which forms the lower edge of the cuff, the said cuii is formed at exactly the right height.
For the great majority of men the standard placement of the trouser cuff is highly satisfactory. However, some men require that the cuif be located at greater or lesser distances from the floor. In such instances the chalk line 37 is made on trouser leg 38 above or below the top edge of bar 12 as shown by the dot-dash line in Fig. 2. This is accomplished by moving the block ifi upward the desired distance or by aligning the marking medium with one or the other of the notches 13.
In some instances it is desired to form imitation or French cuffs. These are formed as shown in Fig. 8. The material 33 of the end is folded upward at 3 1 which pointlocates the under edge of the cuff, extends upward and is folded downward again at 35'. The portion extending downward from point 35 extends only about half way to point 34 and a filler strip 48 is utilized to prevent creasing. For this arrangement the chalk mark for fold 3t is made at the notches 2a of the template, the mark for fold 35' is made at the edge 31 of slot 30, which is conveniently provided with a centrally located notch 59 and the illustrated template which may be provided with a line iz identified with the letter B and located the proper distance from the end edge of the upright thereof. This special arrangement for. boys, trousers and ladies slacks is occasioned by the inherent shortness of the legs thereof of boys trousers.
While 1 have illustrated and described the prete-rred embodiments of my invention, itis, to be understood that I- do not limit. myself to the pre cise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined. in the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by United- States Letters Patent is: I
1. Tailors apparatus for facilitating the accurate locating and forming of trouser cufis on the bottom of trouser legs having suitably located chalk marks thereon, comprising an inverted substantially T-shaped template including an. ups right and cross-bar having notches at the iuncture of the upright and cross bar thereof and a longitudinal slot in the cross bar, the edge of said slot adjacent said notches being located half way between said notches and the far edge of the cross bar, said notches and said edges acting as guides in marking the trousers for the. cuff folds, said upright from said notches to the end edge thereof being of a length to locate. the, cuffs the. desired distance above the floor, the other edge of said, slot rather than the far edge of, the cross bar beingused as a guide for marking a fold line for imitation cuffs, the end edge of the template upright being aligned with said chalk mark to locate the cuif folds accurately.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein the. upright is inclined a short distance forward of the junction with the cross bar.
