Abstract

1, 045, 345. Sewing. J. RUBENSTEIN. June 20, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 24579/63. Heading D1G. [Also in Division G1]. A sewing aid or gauge has an edge formed with a series of notches having a length equal to onehalf of a buttonhole length to be cut in a garment or the like. As shown, the gauge is plate-like in form having a first graduated edge 10, a second graduated edge 12 at right angles to edge 10 and formed with a series of spaced triangular notches 14 and a third edge 16 parallel to edge 10 and formed with a series of spaced parallel-sided notches 18 of progressively increasing depth, each notch 18 having an arrowhead-shaped inner end 19, edge 16 also being formed with a pair of wider notches 20 separated by a tongue 22. The fourth edge of the gauge has a semi-circular position 24, a pair of notches 26 wider than the notches 20 and separated by a wider tongue 28, and a bevelled portion 30. The notches 14 are used for positioning buttons. The notches 18 are used for cutting buttonholes, the depth of a notch being equal to one-half of the required length of a buttonhole. In forming a buttonhole, edge 16 is laid along the edge of a fold in the material and a scissors cut is made in the required notch 18 to the shoulder 32 of the arrowhead 19. The notches 20 and 26 are used for sewing on buttons of different diameters, sewing being effected over the respective tongues 22 and 28.
