Among the purposes and objects of my invention are to provide a cover having a recess and an embossed member having its raised marginal edge to support the overlying cut out edge of the mat around the recess.

Another object is to provide a dished book cover having an inner cut out mat held at its out out portionin spaced relationship to the dished cover by the embossed raised marginal edge of an embossed member to provide a recess in the cover.

An object is to provide an embossed figure having a raised marginal edge to hold the laminations of a book cover apart thereby to provide a recess for the embossed figure.

Still another object is to provide a book having a cover with laminations and niche, a part of the laminations of the cover being dished and others of the laminations being substantially flat and having a cut out within the margin of the cover, and an embossed member having its marginal edges raised to substantially conform to the cut out in the substantially flat laminations to provide a recess in the cover; a part of the out laminations being extended beyond the margin of the cover to provide a hinge for the cover so that the leaves and binding of the book are swingingly secured to the cover.

I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the drawing which forms a part of this, my disclosure.

Fig. 5 is an elevational rear or reverse view of the laminations of the cover and its integral part which hinges the cover to the binding and leaves of the book.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the specification and in the several views of the drawing.

In book covers, and particularly those used for religious purposes, recesses are provided for alto-relievo, demi-relief and has-relief objects such as a crucifix. Such covers are constructed in many ways and in some of the constructions a frame is provided between the laminations such as layers of paper and card board in such a manner that the laminations are cut out to form 2 the margin of the recess and are held apart from the laminations not so cut out.

The figure or crucifix is then placed on and centered within the recess. The preciseness of the operation in positioning the several parts requires skill and a number of operations which by theconstruction of my new cover are eliminated and the beauty of my cover which results from the use of a single embossed member, and which eliminates the frame and separate figure or crucifix is at once apparent.

The visible part of the gold margin is seen in contrast to the background which may be russet, brown or otherwise colored and the cross of ivory or other contrasting color and the contrasting embossed parts are all precisely centered in a single simple assembly operation.

The embossed membermay be metal or a plurality of laminations of metal and paper for stiffness and effect. The reverse or back may be provided with adhesive and thus secured by heat or moistureor both to the laminations of the cover which are not cut out for the recess but which may be dished to provide depth for the recess as well as to add to the richness of the cover and binding.' I

The mat or surrounding face of the recess or one of the laminations of the dished cover may provide the face of the flyleaf of the book and a hinge on which the cover is hinged to the leaves and binding of the book, in the usual customary manner and the portion overlying the cover may be secured to the raised embossed margin of the embossed member by an adhesive coating or may be secured by heat or moisture or both when the parts are assembled.

I have not attempted herein to show all possible modifications of which my invention is capable without departing from the underlying principles, but rather have described and shown in detail a preferred embodiment so that one skilled in the art to which this invention pertains may more readily understand and practice its construction and use. Modifications may suggest themselves after a study of this disclosure.

The preciseness of the detailed description and the preciseness of the detail in the drawing are not intended to limit the scope of my invention which is set forth in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing I have shown a book I having a front cover 2 and back cover 3 hinged to swing in the usual manner at 4 and 5 in relation to the leaves 6 and binding 1.

The front cover, in particular is provided with a dished portion 8 comprising a plurality of laminations 9 the outer lamination I of which is bent over the others at II to provide the outer finish of the cover as well as the edge I2 of the inner face I3 of the cover. The inner face of the laminations I 4 also serves as a mat which is provided with a cut out portion I5 the marginal edges I6 of which are likewise marginal edges of the recess I I.

Disposed between the laminations I4 of the mat and conforming substantially to the marginal edges I6 of the cut out central portion I5, between the mat and the dished portion 8 of the cover I have provided the embossed member I8 having a raised marginal border I9 which supports the overlying edge portion beyond and surrounding the cut out portion [5 of the laminations I 4; thus the recess I1 is provided within the cover and has a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the laminations I4 and the height of the marginal raised border I9 and also the thickness of the material of the embossed member I8. The embossed member I8 conforms to the dished cover laminations to which it is secured by adhesive.

The space or surface 2I within the raised marginal border I9 of the embossed member I8 and within the recess comprises the background 22 and the figure 23 which is raised in bold relief above the background and is protected by being below the general surface of the mat surrounding the niche. The-mat or laminations I4 may be substantially flat or on a common plane except for the cut out portion and the recess. The dished portion of the cover provides a substantial depth for-the recess and for the embossed member which extends beyond the margins of the recess only enough to support the edges of the cutout portion. Adhesive 25 may be provided on the reverse face 24 of the mat or laminations I t or on the raised border I0 or to both for securing them together and likewise the laminations I4 may be'secured to the other laminations at or near .their'borders by-the adhesive 25.

Theembossedmember I8, on its reverse face 26 is preferably provided with the adhesive 21 i which secures the dished laminations thereto thus to automatically fix the member and its figure in its precise position in relation to the mat and the parts of the cover, in a single operation, in the recess of which the raised marginal edges form a part of the edges of the niche.

The front and back covers and a part of their la ninations are carried behind the binding and leaves of the book to connect the covers and to provide the back bone 28 in the usual manner. The number and thickness of the laminations, which form the cover, and the portions of a part of the laminations which are extended to provide 4 the hinges, securement for the binding, fiyleaves and back bone may vary and in many respects are similar to the construction commonly employed in book manufacture and binding.

The. material and size of the parts of my invention may vary and may be modified to suit the size and quality of my book.

Having thus described and shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the following claims.

I claim:

1. In a book, a cover having its marginal edges disposed on a plane substantially above the inside portion of the cover within said marginal edges, a substantially flat lamina having a cut out center, and a member having a figure visible through said out out center and having an embossed raised margin fixed at a predetermined distance from said figure substantially conforming to and lying under the overlying edges of said out out center, one side of said embossed marginal edges being visible through said out out center, said substantially flat lamina being secured to said marginal edges of said cover and to the binding of the book.

2. In a book, a cover being dished on the inside and having its margin raised to a plane above the dished portion, a member having raised embossed marginal edges and a figure raised and embossed, a background integral with said figure and with said embossed marginal edges, a substantially flat sheet having a cut out center secured to the raised marginal edges of the cover and also to said raised embossed marginal edges of said member, whereby said figure and background and one side of said embossed marginal edges are visiblethrough said out out center of said sheet, said embossed edges of said member substantially conforming to the edges of said out out in said sheet and secured thereto to provide a recess, said substantially flat sheet being secured along one of its edges to the binding of the book,
