The number of full size pages used in making a book is preferably such that when they have mounted thereon photographs or other material and the removable portions have been removed, at least for the most part, the book will besubstantially flat. Thus the book. is made with a minimum of paper and will remain sightly and may be easily kept with similar or other kinds of books on a book shelf or the like.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, it will be noted that the full Width permanent pages I5 have been indicated by double lines and the removable portions of the remaining pages have been indicated by triple or shaded lines. This showing facilitates disclosure and understanding of the invention and j readily makes apparent thefconstruction whereby the back region I8 of the book is constructed with a varying thickness decreasing from the full thickness of the book to the thickness determined by the number offull width pages.

The three book sections 29, 22 and 24, illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, include pages having removable portions of varying and lesser width than the permanent pages I6. While the removable portions may be of varying width, they have been illustrated as including the portions 3G having a width of about three and one-half inches, i. e., slightly less than one-half the width of the full width pages; the portions 32 having a width of about two and five-eighths inches; the portions 34 having a width'of about two inches; and the portions 36 having-a width of about one inch. These widths, it should be understood, are'purely illustrative and'may be varied if desired.

The photo record bookis made primarily of sections corresponding to the sections 22 and 24, although one or more sections corresponding to sectionI 2D may be used. Assuming that one section 241s used as the rst section, it is followed by sections 22 and 24 and other sections corresponding to the latter arranged alternately so that there is a removable portion between each pair of permanent pages IS. It might be noted that the sections 22 and 24 correspond to each other except that the latter has, as an added element, an outer sheet 36S including the removable portions 30. f

In accordance with another feature kof the present invention, the center sheets 34C` are provided with full width removable portions 38 so that when the assembled book sections are placed over the arm of a sewing machine they can be readily placed over the arm without likelihood of a short removable portion, suchfas the portion 34 in Fig. 4, or 32 in- Fig. 5 being inaccurately located on the arm and causing improper sewing. kIt will be seen that the use of the center sheets 30C with their full Width removable` portions results inthe location of two removable por-l tions adjacent each other. This is not a disadvantage and, as a matter of fact, it may be dee,

4 sirable in some cases where a greater number of taper providing sheets is desired, or where it is desired to provide more space for the photographs and the like.

The tear out line may be preformed as by the series of perforations 39. These perforations may be located a suitable distance from the stitching 2G. A distance of about one-half inch for pages having a width o f about eight and onehalf'inches is suitable. i f

When 1the various book-'sections have been properly assembled, sewn, and bound to form the body of the book, the top and bottom edges of thesheets can be trimmed without tearing or other disguration, even though the tear out portions arenot the full width oi the pages and no illersv areV used. For example, the two bodies indicated by're'ference characters 4i) and 42 in Fig. 'G'may be placed oneupon the other in opposed relation upon the bed plate i4 of a powerdriven paper cutter. They may be iirmly 4held during the trimming operation by a y movable clamping plate 46 having secured to its underside a holding plate 48 having a lower face 5l] tapered rmly to hold the bodies when they are placed one above the other as illustrated in the figure. In trimming, the clamping plate 45 is rst depressed firmly to hold the bodies, after which the knife 52 is lowered to trim the pages.

The trimming vis uniform and accurate and does not result in the tearing of any of the pages because of the gradual taper in the thickness ofv the body resulting from the use of pages having removable portions of varying width positioned among the full` width pages. The gradual taper in the thickness of the body enables the clampv` ing plate rmly and securely to hold all the pages of the book over their entire widths so that the cutting means will not tear or unevenly cut the edges.

A book constructed in accordance with the present invention cannot' only be made readily but it can be made economically and without the waste of paper.

The present invention may be applied not only to books of the type describedherein, but itffmay..A

also be applied to'photo record books of the typen disclosed and claimed in my copending` application, Serial No.y 522,874,1-lled February 18, 1944,. including one or more pages or sheets of a widthless than that of the book adapted to receive an insert, such as a photo, between them and to be, secured to said insert. Y

While the present invention has been described in connection with the specific details of `a single embodiment, it should be understood that'it is susceptible of variations, as indicated in the preceding paragraph, and that the detailsv should, therefore, not beconsidered as limitative. of the invention, except asset forth in the accompanying claims. .Y f

What-I claim as new anddesire-to secure by-v Letters Patent is: i

1. A permanently bound photoA record book, including in combination, a plurality of` spaced` apartY pages, and another pluraltypf pages hav-i:

' ing removable portions of varying width ,disposedv Width and there being a sufficient number of them so distributed among the pages of equal Width as to give at least a portion of the book a substantially uniformly varying thickness.

3. A photo record book, including in combination, a plurality of pages of full Width permanently bound in the book, and a plurality of other pages also permanently bound in the book and having removable portions, said removable portions extending from a generally uniform point near the back of the book to varying points to Ward the opposite side of the book and there being a suiilcient number of them distributed substantially uniformly among the full Width pages to provide a book having a back portion of gradually decreasing thickness.

4. A photo record book, including in combination, a plurality of pages of full Width permanently bound in the book, and a plurality of other pages also permanently bound in the book and having removable portions, said removable portions extending from a generally uniform point near the back of the book to varying points toward the opposite side of the book and there being a sufficient number of them distributed substantially uniformly among the full Width pages to provide a book having a back portion of gradually decreasing thickness, and the Widest of said removable portions having a width of about one-half of the Width of the full Width pages.

5. A photo record book, including in combination. a plurality of pages of full Width permanently bound in the book, and a plurality of other pages also permanently bound in the book and having removable portions, said removable por tions extending from a generally uniform point near the back of the book to varying points ton ward the opposite side of the book and there being a sufficient number of them distributed substantially uniformly among the full width pages to provide a book having a back `portion of gradually decreasing thickness, certain of said pages with removable portions having Widths corresponding to that of the full Width pages.

6. A photo record book, including in combination, a plurality of sections, eacn including a plurality of permanently bound pages of full Width, and a plurality of other pages also bound in the book having removable portions, said removable portions extending from a generally uniform point near the back of the section to varying points toward the opposite edge of the book and there being a sufficient number of them distributed substantially uniformly among the full Width pages to provide a book having at least an inner portion of gradually decreasing thickness, and the center pages of the section being of full Width.
