This invention relates to knives, and more particularly to improved ornamental covering means for the knife frame.

Heretofore in making inexpensive ornamental covers for the scale members of a knife frame, it has been the practice to provide a decorative member which was held to the scale member of the knife by a mounting member comprising a pair of metallic bolsters joined by an intermediate metallic portion.

In my copending application, Serial No. 382,558, for Knives, filed March 10, 1941, I have disclosed an improved construction for such ornamental covering means for knives, wherein the bolster and cover plate are preassembled into a cover unit and, as such, positioned and secured on the scale.

In accordance with my present invention, another improved construction of such ornamental covering means is provided in the form of a cover plate which may be held to the knife frame by means of the bolsters, although the latter are separately positioned on the scale. Accordingly, an object of my invention is to provide a covering means of the character described havin novel bolsters which captively hold the ornamental cover plates to the knife frame.

Another object of my invention is to provide improved means for attaching both the bolsters and the ornamental cover plate to the knife frame.

A further object of my invention is to provide an improved covering means of the character described which permits both the bolsters and the ornamental covering plate to be simultaneously assembled and secured on a knife frame.

Another object of my invention is to provide an ornamental covering means of the character described which shall comprise but few and simple parts; shall be inexpensive to manufacture and simple to assemble; shall be rugged in construction and decorative in appearance; and which shall be positively and firmly held to a knife frame.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the claims.

Certain features of my invention which are shown and described but not claimed herein are shown, described and claimed in my aforesaid copending application.

Referring now in detail to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1-3, l0 indicates a pocket knife having any suitable type of frame H, such as for example that shown and described in Patent No. 2,170,537, dated August 22, 1939, for Knife handle and component parts thereof. Said frame comprises a pair of knife blades I2 and I3 pivotally mounted on a rivet I4 which is supported between parallel upper and lower elongated scales l5 and I6. An intermediate plate ll separates the knife blades l2 and I3, The usual springs l8 and I9 are provided to hold the blades in either open or closed position. As is customary in the art, an end rivet 20 and central rivet 2| are also employed to maintain the various component parts of the knife frame If in assembled position, the heads of these rivets as Well as the pivot rivet I 4 extranding above the surface of the scales I5 and of still an- In accordance with my invention, I provide ornamental covering means for each scale [5 and I6 of the knife frame, said means comprising an ornamental cover plate 23 and a pair of separate bolsters 25 and 25. The cover plate 23 is made from any suitable decorative material, such as for example Celluloid, synthetic resin of the phenol or urea formaldehyde condensation or other type, cellulose acetate, rubber, or the like, and is of appreciable thickness so that when not abnormally stressed it will maintain a shape such as shown in Figs, 1-3, its exposed longitudinal edges being of substantially the same contour as the underlying edges of the scales l and I6.

The underside of the plate 23 is provided with suitable indentations 26 to enable said plate to clear the heads of the rivets i4, 20, 2|, and with other suitable indentations whose position and function will be hereinafter described.

The bolsters 24 and 25 are disposed one at each end of the ornamental cover plate 23 and :are so constructed and arranged with respect thereto that the edges of the bolsters are flush with the adjacent parts of the cover plate and scale. To this end, the portions of the cover plate which are overlaid by the bolsters are reduced in size by an amount substantially equal to the thickness of the sheet metal comprising the bolsters.

Each of the bolsters 24 and 25 is provided with means for firmly attaching said bolsters to the scales l5 and i5. Said means preferably comprises an attaching element in the form of a pair of integral projections 2'1 extending from oppositely disposed portions of the side edges of the bolsters 2 2 and 25 adjacent the wider end thereof. Said projections are folded over and inserted into raised pockets 28 formed in the scales i5 and i6. Suitable indentations 29 are provided. in the under surface of the cover plate it to accommodate said pockets 28. As the eX- treme end portions of the plate 23 are disposed under the bolsters 2d and 25 and are in contact with the under surface of said bolsters, it will be seen that by firmly attaching the bolsters to the scales by the means above described, at the same time I clamp the cover plates thereto. The projections 21, after being folded over and inserted into the pockets 28, lie wholly within the periphery of the bolsters 24 and 25 and are only barely noticeable upon the exterior of the knife, their presence having been exaggerated in Fig. 1 for the purpose of showing their position and structure.

It will be noted that the attaching means above described form an unobtrusive, positive mechanical joint, in contrast with such attaching means as exteriorly disposed rivets or cement.

The covering means may be assembled by first positioning the cover plate 23 on a knife scale it with the peripheral edges thereof in substantial registry with the edges of said scale. The bolsters 2d and 25 may be then placed upon the reduced end portions of said cover plate and the projections 2'? on each bolster folded under into the corresponding pockets 28. If desired, this procedure may be varied by first mounting one or the bolsters 25 on a scale it and folding its projections 27 into the mating pockets 28. One reduced end of the cover plate 23 may be then slipped under said attached bolster 2d and the other bolster 25 then superimposed on the exposed reduced end of the cover plate 23, after attaching means for fixing the bolsters 3d and 35 to the knife scales l5 and i6. Said means comprises a single projection 3'! on each of said bolsters, whichextends from a transverse edge thereof and is folded over so as to lie within a raised pocket 38 disposed along the longitudinal axis of the knife frame I I. The cover plate 33 may be mutilated as shown in Fig. 4 to remove the ends thereof and leave two spaced nubs MB and M, one lying on each side of the folded over projection 37. Another integral projection 32 is provided at the narrow end of the bolster 24, said projection being folded over during assembly of the knife to be received in a recessed pocket 53 of a knife scale 15.

Due to the elevation of both of the pockets 38 and 4-3 above the surface of the scale it, I also provide indentations i l and 15 on the under surface of the plate 33. The covering means comprising the plate 33 and bolsters 34 and 35 may be assembled in this form of my invention in the same manner as the covering plate and bolsters described in reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 I have shown still another modified form of my invention, wherein a projeotion extends from a transverse edge of the bolsters and wherein means is further provided to prevent possible wobbling of the cover plate. In this form of my invention each bolster 5d and 55 is provided with a projection 5i which extends from a transverse edge of said bolster and a projection 52 extending from the narrow end of said bolster, said projections being received in raised pockets 58 and 63 in the knife scale 55. However, in this form of my invention I do not mutilate the ends of the cover plate 53 to provide the hubs it and 4E shown in the second form of my invention. In lieu thereof, I form a through aperture 65 in registration with the projection ill and through which said projection passes before it is received in the scale pocket 58.

Although in this form of my invention it is more difficult to assemble the covering means on the knife frame, it will be noted that due to the small tolerance maintained between the projection '5'! and the side walls of the aperture 65 no movement of the cover plate will be permitted even if, due to abuse, the bolsters should be slightly raised away from the knife scale.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, and an elongated preformed ornamental cover plate having longitudinal edges of the same general configuration as the edges of said knife frame, the ends of said plate underlying and contacting said bolsters, each of said bolsters having a plurality'of spaced integral attaching means which positively and firmly hold the bolster to said knife frame whereby said cover plate is captively held between said bolsters and said knife frame, said attaching means comprising projections extending from oppositely disposed edges of the bolster.

2. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, and an elongated preformed ornamental cover plate having longitudinal edges of the same general configuration as the edges of said knife frame, the ends of said plate underlying and contacting said bolsters, each of said bolsters having a plurality of spaced integral attaching means which independently, positively and firmly hold each of the bolsters to said knife frame whereby said cover plate is captively held between said bolsters and said knife frame, said attaching means comprising projections extending from oppositely disposed edges of the bolster.

3. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, and an elongated preformed ornamental cover plate having longitudinal edges of the same general configuration as the edges of said knife frame, the ends of said plate underlying and contacting said bolsters, each of said bolsters being independently selfheld to said knife frame by a plurality of spaced attaching means integral with the bolster whereby said cover plate is captively held between said bolsters and said knife frame, said means comprising projections extending from oppositely disposed edges of the bolster.

An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, and a thick ornamental preformed elongated cover plate, the under surface of said cover plate being of the same general configuration as the upper surface of said frame, the upper surface of said cover plate being convex and the longitudinal edges of said cover plate being of substantially the same outline as the longitudinal edges of said knife frame, the ends of said plate underlying and contacting said bolsters, each of said bolsters having a plurality of spaced integral attaching means which positively and firmly hold the bolster to said knife frame whereby said cover plate is captively held between said bolsters and said knife frame, said means comprising projections extending from oppositely disposed edges of the bolster.

5. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, a preformed ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means comprising a plurality of projections integrally extending from oppositely disposed edges of each of said bolsters and clinched to said knife frame, said means and said knife frame cooperating to captively hold said cover plate.

6. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate sheet metal bolsters, a preformed ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means comprising a plurality of projections integrally extending from oppositely disposed edges of each of said bolsters and clinched to said knife frame, said means and said knife frame cooperating to captively hold said cover plate.

'7; An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, a preformed ornamental cover plate, and means comprising projections integral with and extending from opposite side edges of said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said projections being clinched to said knife frame, said means and said knife frame cooperating to captively hold said cover plate.

8. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame having pockets, said covering means comprising a pair of separate bolsters, an ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means and said knife frame cooperating to captively hold said cover plate, said means comprising projections extending from oppositely disposed edges of said bolsters and adapted to be clinched in said pockets.

9. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame having pockets, said covering means comprising a pair of separate bolsters, an ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means and said knife frame cooperating to captively hold said cover plate, said means comprising projections extending from opposite side edges of said bolsters, said projections having a fold to direct a portion thereof into said pockets, said fold being substantially coincident with the underlying edge of said knife frame.

10. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, an elongated preformed ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means cooperating with said knife frame to captively hold said cover plate, said means comprising a projection on each of said bolsters extending from a transverse edge thereof, said projection passing through a mating aperture provided in said preformed cover plate.

11. An ornamental covering means for a knife frame comprising a pair of separate bolsters, an elongated ornamental cover plate, and means integral with said bolsters to positively and firmly hold said bolsters to said knife frame, said means cooperating with said knife frame to captively hold said cover plate, said means comprising a projection on each of said bolsters extending from a transverse edge thereof, the ends of said cover plate being mutilated to provide pairs of projecting nubs one on each side of each projection,
