Imperial Knife. Company, Inc., Broyidence, R. I.', a; corporation of Rhode Island ApplicatiomMa'rc-h. 10, 1941 SerialNm 382.,5;58
This invention relates toknivesy and-more particularly: to apre-assembled ornamental covering unit for. the knife frames Heretofore in order tomake an inexpensive ornamental cover for the scal'e members of the knifexframe it has been thepractice to provide a decorative member which was held to each scale by a. mounting member comprisingv a pair' of metallicbolsters-joined by an intermediate metallic portion.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a'construction for ornamentalcoveringunits which, by' using separate bolsters, does awaywith theintermediate metallic portion;
Another object 0t my invention isto providean improvedpie-assembled unit' of i the character" described. having bolsterswhich are positively and firmly self -heldto an ornamen tal 'cover plate;- the bolsters being provided also with means for attachment to the scale member of a knife:
A furtherobject of my'inventionis to provide an improved pre-assembled unit of the character described which shall comprise but few and-sire ple parts; which shall be inexpensive' -to manuiacture and simple to assemble; which shall be rugged in constructionand decorative in appearance; and which will be positively and firmly held to a. knife frame:
Other objects of this invention will in part be I obvious." and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The inventionaccordingly-consists in the tea. tures" of construction, combinations of" elements,
and arrangement'of parts which w-il'l'be exemplifled in: the? construction hereinafter described;
and: of which: thescope of application willbein-- dicated in .the claims.
Certain features of my inventionwhich are shown. andd'escribed: but" not claimed herein are shown, described. and claimed insmy' co-pendingapplication Serial No.382,557, filed March 10; 1941.

position;v the; heads of these rivets; as well as :the pivot rivet. [4* extending above the surface of the scales I5 andili.
In accordance: withmy inventionl provide an ornamental covering. unit'22v for each scale I5 and I6 of'the knife. frame 11,, saidtunit. comprising an ornamental cover plate 23 andapair: of: separate bolsters v24 and 25. The. .cover plate 23 .is made frame any; suitable decorative material, such as for example Celluloid, synthetic: resin of the" phenol or urea; formaldehyde. condensation or other :type; cellulose-acetate; rubber, or. the like,
and is of appreciablethickness; so that; when not abnormally stressed it will maintain a: shape. such asshown in. Figs; 1.4, its exposed: longitudinal edges being; ofvsubstantially 'the' same contours as the underlyingtedges of the scales IS-and IS.
The underside of the scaleZS'is provided with suitable indentations: 26 to; enable-said-. plate to clear the, heads ofthe -rivetsl l4. and 20, 2|, and
with; other suitable indentations whose position 1 ness cf'the sheet metal comprising-the bolsters.
when the projections 21 are received in the re-' cesses 28 the bolsters 24 and will be tightly and permanently attached to the decorative cover plate 23 and after the bottom surface of said cover plate is covered said projections will be substantially concealed.
Suitable means is also provided for attaching the assembled unit comprising the cover plate 23 and attached bolsters 24 and 25 to the scales l5 and 16 of the knife frame. To this end I employ another integral projection 29 on each bolster which projects from the narrow end thereof. Said projection 29, after the bolsters and scale have been assembled into the unit shown in Figs. 2 and 3, extends away from the bottom surface of said unit.
The knife frame upon which this type of unit is mounted is provided with a pair of pockets 30 at each end of the scales, which are adapted to receive therein the projections 29, same being folded thereinto after the preassembled unit 22 has been properly positioned upon the knife frame I I. As will be seen in Fig. 1, the projections 25, after being folded over, lie wholly within the periphery of "the bolsters 24 and 25 and will be only barely noticeable upon the exterior of the knife, their presence having been exaggerated in Fig. 1 for the purpose of showing their position'and structure.
It will be noted that the attaching means employed to hold the unit 22 to the frame II, as well as the means employed to hold the bolsters to the cover plate, form an unobtrusive mechanical joint between the unit 22 and the knife frame, in contrast with such attaching means as exteriorly disposed rivets or cement.
By reason of the elevation of the pockets 30 above the scales l5 and I6, I also provide a pair of mating indentations 3| on the under surface of the cover plate 23.
In Figs. 6-8 I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein in lieu of providing projections 2'! on the side edges 'of the bolsters 24 and 25 I have employed a central projection 41 extending from a transverse edge of the bolsters 44 and 45 through the cover plate 43. Said projections 41 are bent over to pass freely through an aperture 40 in cover plate 43 and are then further bent around into a recess 48 on the under surface of said plate where said projec- It will thus be seen that there is provided a vention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
