Morin, Bronx, N. Y., assignor to Whitehall Patents Corporation, Bronx, N. Y., a corporation oi' New -York Application March 19, 1938, Serial No. 196,844 6 Claims. (Cl. 40-140) -This invention relates to separable fastener parel, it is desirable to attach characterized eledevices employing stringers with a slider movments to the finger-piece to give a specific deable along the stringers to couple and uncouple sign thereto, or as a ,mea-ns of identification. the links thereof, and especially to the nger For example,.the initials of a purchaser may be pieces or pulls employed in conjunction with the readily attached to the pull. If desired, 55
'simple forms of tools or xtures may be used vto insert the elements 25, 25a inA position.
vIn Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, lla represents a finger piece or pull of slightmodiflcation as to general form and also with respect to the contour of the recess provided in one surface thereof; 'that is to say, the recess 20a is provided on' opposed side walls with 'notches 21 to receive corresponding projecting lugs 28 on characterized elements 29, 29a of the Same general type as the elements 25, 25a. With this construction, the member 24, shown in Fig. 1, is dispensed with `and the projecting lugs serve the samel purpose; that is to say, prevent longitudinal movement of the elements 29, 29a one with respect to the other.
In forming the devices ll, lla by die casting processes, it is desirable to simplify the.,castlng operation to cast the pulls .with straight side walls as at 30, Fig. 6 of the drawing, forming slightly protruding portions 3| on the surface of the pull adjacent the walls 30. In completely forming the device, pressure is applied to the re- -cessed side surface of the pull to displace the raised material 3i and form the inwardly extending ilanges which-produces what' might be termed a dovetail vsocket 32 asv represented in Fig. 7' of the drawing, the result of which will be the inturned flanges, as for exampley at 2l, in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which retains the characterized elements against lateral displacement.
Another' form of construction is shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 of the drawing wherein a pull Hb is provided with a recess Zlib having substantially straight boundary walls.- With this pull, a relatively wide aperture 33 is provided centrally of the recessed portion thereof and two narrow apertures 34 and 35 are provided at the ends of said recess. These apertures register with re; cesses 33a, 34a and 35a on the under surface of the pull. Withthis construction, characterized elements 36, 36a are each provided with end walls as may be^seen upon a consideration'of Fig. 9 .of the drawing. These end walls terminate in projecting lugs-3l, which extend though the apertures 33, 34 and 35 and are adapted to be folded and compressed onto and arranged within the recesses-33a, 34a, 35a as clearly seen in Fig. 9 in securing the elements 36, 36a. in position. With the construction shown inFigs. 8, 9 and; 10, as well as in Figs. 11 and l2, a hammer 'or other tool may be utilized in bending over the projecting lugs or'retaining clips 31.
In Figs; l1 and 12 of the drawing, another form of finger -piece or pll il'c is'illustrated which differs from the structure shown in Figs. 8,. 9 and 10, simply in providing two `pairs of apertures 38 at opposite sides of the nger piece to receive projecting lugs or clips 31a, similar to the clips 3l and which enter recesses 39, registering with the apertures 38 as seen for example in Fig. cl2 of the drawing. f
It will ,be understood that generally speaking the complete fastener devices will have the pulls attached thereto with the recesses left blank. The merchant or storekeeper will be provided with a supply of the various characterizing elements and when the fastener is sold or when an article of merchandise having a fastener thereon is sold, the initials of the purchaser may beapplied to the pull or any other symbol or characterized elements may be applied to give ornamentation to the device, or in classifying it Aor characterising it in anyway. Regardless 'ofl the particular type and kind of pull employed;` that is `characterized elements.
to say, from a structural standpoint, the elements may be formed of any suitable materialand in any desired marmer, such as stampings from suitable sheet material or by pressure molding or forming such materials as employed in the slider. On the other hand, these devices may be formed from cellulose acetate. It will thus be seen that any type or' kind of color or color combinations may be employed in the elements to give added distinction and characterization thereto. In utilizing such materials as cellulose acetate in the formation of tne devices when constructed and used substantially as shown in Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive, means will be provided to soften the lugs, for example bythe application of heat or other means of softening the material to permit the shaping or bending thereof.
In using metallic characterized elements, the same may be composed ofl suitable' materials which willl produce an attractive appearance apart from any treatment thereto; where on the other hand, the said elements may be plated by any of the known processes to produce any desired finish or eiect not only from a standpoint of lustre but-from a standpoint of color.
The recesses, such for example as the recess 20 in Fig.l 1, of the respective pulls may be saidto form panels on .the pull for the receptionvof the These 'panels lhave means, for example, the inturned flanges, apertures, walls, and projections, for receiving parts or sections of said elements in retaining the elements' against displacement from the panels.
In the accompanying drawing, all of the pulls are shown of more or less one general shape and form. It will be understood, however, that the contour or design of the pull` may be modified to suit the various uses to which the fasteners are applied. In likemanner, it will be apparent that two or more characterized elements may be' coupled with the pull in any desired arrangement, which will be consistent with the shape and contour of the pull.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new anddes'ire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
