1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to display mounts and more particularly to light-weight picture mounts of rich appearance that may be constructed at an extremely low cost.
The object of the invention is achieved by forming a mount base of thick compressible cellular material which has formed in the face thereof, preferably by a pressing operation, a picture-receiving well of a depth sufficient tohold a picture or the like within the facial plane of the base. According to the invention material for display is held within the receiving well by a display window which is attached to the marginal area on the face of the base member and which has internal margins that extend inwardly over the marginal edges of the well in overlapping position with respect to display material in the well.
The full nature of the invention will be more evident from a reading of the detailed description in view of the drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a base member having a material-receiving well formed within the face thereof;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the mount in accordance with the invention having attached thereto a decorative facing material and a picture-retaining display window; and
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view on line 33 of Figure 2.
In accordance with the practice of the invention a thick base member H! of compressible cellular material is provided with a display material-receiving well l2 in the face thereof. The nature of the base member I0 is such as to permit the formation of the well 12 by a pressing operation and it is desirably of such material that when a rich heavy looking mount is formed, it will, nevertheless, be extremely light in weight. Preferably the base material is of the kind that is obtainable in sheets having a thickness of onehalf to three-quarters of an inch and of which the weight is such that it will be in the neighborhood of ten to twelve ounces per square foot.
The base material in accordance with the invention is cut to the desired dimensions preferably with beveled marginal edges l4. Each sized sheet has then formed therein a display material-receiving well l2 as aforesaid. The well l2 may be fashioned in any desirable manner but preferably the well-forming operation consists of subjecting the facial zone constituting the well to pressure whereby the zone forming the material-receiving well is compressed to such depth that display material therein will lie with- 2 in the facial plane of the sheet I". The well is preferably of a depth to receive both a picture and a sheet of glass 24 with the facial plane of the glass being no higher than the facial plane of the non-depressed borders of the base material surrounding the well.
In order to provide for the retention of display material within the well l2, there is provided a display window it which is normally attached to the marginal area on the face of the base [0. The window It has internal margins l8 extending inwardly over the marginal edges 20 of the well provided for receiving the display material.
Normally one marginal edge of the display window It is free to permit positioning of display material within the well l2 and the free edge is adapted to be fixed against the face of the base board after the display material has been inserted.
In the most specific form of the invention, the back surface and the marginal edges of the base member H! are covered with a flexible decorative covering material 22, the edges of which terminate on the face of the base member 19. The terminating edges of the decorative covering material 22 are conveniently covered and effectively concealed by means of the display window l6 thereby providing a finished appearance without added manufacturing costs or effort. The decorative covering material 22 not only enhances the appearance of the finished product, but serves the useful purpose of preventing absorption of moisture in the porous edges of the cellular base stock. The same utilitarian result can be achieved by spraying or otherwise applying a li uid or plastic moisture-proofing material to the exposed porous edges and surfaces of the mount.
In accordance with the foregoing there is provided a picture display mount that has an unusually attractive appearance and which may be manufactured at an exceptionally low cost. With reference to this latter advantage, it is to be noted that the mounts of the prior practices have been fabricated from a plurality of die-cut elements, whereas in the present case a single pressing operation results in the same structure as the multiple operations heretofore necessary. The practice of the invention preferably proceeds in accordance with the most specific disclosure thereof, but modifications in both the method of procedure and in the construction itself are possible within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A display mount comprising, a single unitary base member of cellular material having an uncompressed thickness of one-half to three-quarters of an inch and having a weight in the uncompressed state approximating twelve ounces per square foot, the central front area of said base member being depressed to compact said area of the base portion and provide a well in the front face having a depth for receiving sheetlike disp lay material in said well with the front face of the, display material substantially in the plane of the uncompressed portion of the base 10 member bounding said well, said base member having a plane flat rear surface over the entire area thereof, a flexible covering material' extenfd -f ing over the rear face and edges of said basemember and lying along the boundary portion of the front face thereof, a display window attached to and overlying the covering material ternal margins extending inwardly over the bounding said well, said window overlying the edges of said covering material and having infile of this patent:
