Description

DISPLAY FOR PICTURES, ADVERTISING INFORMATION OR ANY PRINTED MATERIAL Filed Feb. 28, 1967 INVENTOR. FEED L JI IIV FIGI United States Patent US. Cl. 40-158 9 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A display comprising a framed backboard bordered by magnetic ribbons or strips with a removable transparent cover overlying the matter to be displayed, and with a mat formed with an opening through which the displayed matter may be seen, with iron or steel strips attached at its underside, in registry with the magnetic ribbons or strips so that it immediately forms contact with the magnetic ribbons or strips so that the mat may be removed if desired and display material may be removed from or inserted beneath the transparent cover.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described comprising a framed backboard bordered by magnetic ribbons or strips and adapted to receive pictures, photographs or other material printed on sheets or cards, with a mat overlying said backboard and formed with openings through which the displayed matter is to be seen, and said mat having attached at its underside steel or iron strips to contact the magnetic strips or ribbons.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, a transparent cover or plate removable from the device and adapted to cover the pictures or other matter placed on the backboard.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the framed backboard includes frame portions to center the mat.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described so constructed that the magnetic ribbons or strips center the pictures or other matter to be displayed and also center the transparent cover for said pictures.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a display divice of the character described in which one or more intermediate transverse magnetic ribbons are placed on the backboard and in which the mat has transverse steel or iron strips attached to its underside for attraction to said transverse magnetic ribbon.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged and durable device of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which may be made in various sizes, with one or more openings arranged as desired, which may be easy to assemble and manipulate and which shall yet be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWING In the accompanying drawing, in which are shown various illustrative embodiments of this invention,
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2--2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 but illustrating a modified construction; and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 1 and illustrating another modified construction.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring now in detail to the drawing and particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, numeral 10 designates a display device embodying the invention.
The device 10 may be rectangular or of any other suitable desired shape. Said device 10 comprises a backboard or backing member 11 made of wood, corrugated board, Masonite, chipboard or any other suitable material which is preferably stiff and strong.
Attached to the peripheral or border edges of the backboard 11 are framing strips 12 which may also be made of Wood, Masonite, chip-board or any other suitable material. The strips 12 contact the outer edges of the backboard 11 and extend forwardly therefrom. The rear edges 12a of the framing strips 12 are preferably flush with the rear surface 11a of the backboard 11. A decorative paper or cloth sheet 13 is attached to and covers the rear surfaces 11a and 12a. Attached to the front surface of the backboard 11, as by gluing or any other suitable manner, is a decorative sheet 14 which may be made of paper, cloth or any other suitable sheet material.
Glued to the front face of the decorative sheet 14 and lying against the inner surfaces of the framing strips 12, are magnetic strips 15. Each magnetic strip 15 may comprise a ribbon 16 of magnetic material such as rubber or plastic in which fine particles of magnetic material are embedded. A wood strip or other strip 17 may be glued to the rear of each magnetic ribbon 16. The rear of the Wood strip 17 is glued as at 18 to the sheet 14. Thus, in the device 10 there are elongated side magnetic ribbons 15 and shorter upper and lower magnetic ribbons 15. A picture, photograph, card, advertising matter or other printed sheet 20 to be displayed may be placed on the decorative paper sheet 14 and it is centered by the magnetic strips 15, having edge to edge contact therewith.
A cover sheet or plate 21 preferably transparent and made of either plastic or glass may be removably placed over the picture 20 and it likewise is centered by and in edge to edge contact with the magnetic strips 15. The sheet 21 may be acetate. It is a loose sheet and may be removed or lifted up to insert the display cards or sheets 20 on the decorative sheet 14.
The magnetic strips and the cover sheet 21 are all covered by a removable mat 23. The mat 23 may be made of cardboard, leather, Leatherette or any other decorative fairly stitf but somewhat flexible sheet material. It is centered by the front ends of the frame strips 12. It is formed with one or more openings 24 through which the cards or photographs or other matter to be displayed may be viewed. The openings 24 may be of various sizes or shapes as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing.
Attached to the rear or inner surface of the mat 23 adjacent the border thereof are elongated iron or steel strips 25 which register with the magnetic strips 15. The strips 25 may be glued or otherwise attached to the mat 23 as by layer of glue 26. When the mat is placed over the backing member, the iron or steel strips 25 will immediately be attracted to and contact the magnetic strips 15. However, the mat may be readily withdrawn by merely inserting a fingernail at one end and pulling the mat off.
Any suitable hinging device 30 may be attached to the upper end of the device so that the device may be hung on any hook or suspension means.
In FIG. 3 there is shown a device 10a embodying the invention, similar to the device 10 with the exception that the backing member 111 (corresponding to the backing member 11 of FIG. 2) is recessed at its edges, as at 112, and the magnetic strips 15 are partially disposed within the recesses and partially project therebeyond. With such construction the member 1011 may be thinner than the member 10.
In FIG. 4 there is shown a device 1012 embodying the invention similar to the device 10 except that its proportions and dimensions are different, and with the further exception that a transverse intermediate magnetic strip 15 is provided. It is disposed between the top and bottom magnetic strips 15. Also the mat 123 (which corresponds to the mat 23 of FIG. 2) has an additional steel or iron strip 124 attached at its underside and disposed transversely of and so located as to register with the intermediate magnetic strip 15. With such construction each opening 124 of the mat 123 is surrounded on four sides by magnetic strips and by strips of steel or iron to be attracted to said magnetic strips.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an article in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
