REEL FOR'ICLOTHESLINECOVERS" Helen Wod zan owski, J ersey:,City;N J Application fivember s, 1950;"Serial No:194,-s01
' i 2 Claims. (01. 242401).
My invention relates generallyto clothesline shields and specifically to clothesline shields which are applied to a clothesline automatically upon the movement of the clothesline.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide a clothesline shield in which the clothesline covering or shield is automatically payed out as the line is moved.
It is a further object of my invention to provide an easily detachable clothesline shield in which the shielding tape may be readily removed and washed when soiled.
It is still a further object of my invention to provide a clothesline shield that, when applied to the clothesline, protects the clothing hung upon the line from being soiled by accumulated dirt and grime on the surface of the clothesline.
Among the still further objects of my invention is to provide a clothesline shield which is simple in form, easy to construct, durable, inexpensive and easy to maintain and operate.
These objects and advantages, as well as many other objects and advantages, will be achieved by the device illustrated in the drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the present invention in cooperative relationship with a clothesline;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the casing Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the axle;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the cover;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the crank;
Figure 6 is a view of the tape; and
Figure 7 is a view of the tape key.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that my invention provides a casing II which has two forward extending sides or ears l2 connected together by transverse mounting brackets l3. The ears l2 have holes l4 into which the axle [5 may be inserted. The mounting brackets I3, are provided with slots I6. There are also holes I! so that the casing ll may be attached to a building surface by screws, or other suitable means. A semi-circular cover I8 is provided with channels [9. At each edge these channels engage the edges of the sides 12 of the casing II. The ends of the cover [8 are provided with tabs 20 which will enter the slots I6 and can then be bent over to firmly attach the cover Hi to the casing H. The cover I8 is also provided with a frontal slot 2|. A tape 22 passes through this slot 2| and enters an opening 23 in the axle I5 which is positioned in the holes [4. A flange 24 on the end of the axle l5, serves to keep the axle properly positioned at one end in" the 1 casing. .At the-other provided with a series of tongues 25. When the axle I5 is passed through the holes [4, a crank 26 is slipped over this end of the axle IS on the outside of the ears l2, as appears in Figure 1. The tongues 25 are bent over so as to firmly fix the handle 26 in place. The tongues 25 cooperate with corresponding indentations 21 in the crank 26 so that the crank 26 and the axle I 5 are keyed together. A bar 28 is inserted into the axle l5 where it engages the tape against the inside of the axle l5 and prevents the end of the tape from pulling out of the opening or slot 23. The end of the tape has attached thereto a loop 29. When it is desired to cover a clothesline 30 with the tape, a clothespin 3| is inserted through the loop 29. The tape 22 will then follow the clothesline 30 as it is reeled out, and as garments are attached to the clothesline 30, the tape 22 is included between the garment and the clothesline 30 and held in place there by other clothespins. As the clothesline 30 is returned and the garments are pulled in to be removed, the tape 22 may be simply rewound in the device by merely turning the crank 26.
The foregoing description is intended to merely illustrate one embodiment of my invention, for many changes may be made in the construction, selection and arrangement of the various parts, all within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: I 1
l. A reel for a clothesline cover tape comprising a sheet metal casing including a pair of substantially semi-circular shaped sides, upper and lower mounting brackets connecting the straight edge portions of said sides, said brackets having spaced slots formed therein, a sheet metal cover member shaped to conform to the configuration of the sides of the casing and formed with marginal channels within which the top, front and bottom edges of the respective sides fit, bendable ears formed on the rear free ends of the cover member for disposition through the respective slots in the mounting brackets to secure the cover member on the casing, said cover member having a slot in the front side thereof, a rotatable shaft extending transversely through the central portions of the sides and provided with means for attaching one end of a clothesline cover tape thereto, and a crank keyed on one end of the shaft for rotating the same.
2. A reel for a clothesline cover tape comprising a sheet metal casing including a pair of subend, the axle I 5 is stantially semi-circular shaped sides, upper and lower mounting brackets connecting the straight edge portions of said sides, said brackets having spaced slots formed therein, a sheet metal cover member shaped to conform to the configuration of the sides of the casing and formed with marginal channels within which the top, front and bottom edges of the respective sides fit, bendable ears formed on the rear free ends of the cover member for disposition through the respective slots in the mounting brackets to secure the cover member on the casing, said cover member having a slot in the front side thereof, said sides having centrally located registering openings formed therein, a shaft extending through the registering openings, a flange formed on one. end
of the shaft for engagement with the outer face I of one side of the casing, a series of bendable tongues formed on the other end of the shaft and projecting beyond the outer face of the other side of the casing, a crank mounted on the last 4 mentioned end of the shaft and formed with notches to receive the respective tongues on the end of the shaft to key the crank on the shaft, said shaft being provided with means for attaching one end of a clothesline cover tape thereto.
