Patented Jem-5, isos l Application filed April 9, 1908..A l Serial No. 426.154.
eei'tkn'ownV that I, Atfci's'r 'oi'rrxmi, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Sal1e,`in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsl in Clothes-Line Reels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,V and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for clothes lines and has for its object to provide a receptacle in which a clothes line may he conveniently drawn after the same has been used.
Another object is to provide in a device of thisV kind convenient means for rolling the clothes line upon a rcel, said reel being placed in and inclosed in a box whereby said reel is protected from the weather.
Forthese and still other objects which will appear asthe description proceeds the invention consists of certain novel features. a1'- rangements and combinations of parts of which the herein described attachment is' one of many ossible embodiments.
lVhile V l minute details of the invention, the invention is not limited to these as the details of construction and combination may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In 'the annexed drawings forming 'a part of this specification in which like reference characters refer to like arts throu hout the several views and whic are for il ustrat-ive purposes' only and therefore not drawn to any particular' scale, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my device in use; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the box; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to. the section of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my device is shown in connection with a clothes line 1 supported by posts 2 and 3. The box or casing 4 is shown ,as attached to the post 3 at a proper he'` ht above the ound for operation, the clot es line 1 passmg over the pulley 5 and thene downwardly in the casing 4. The casin is suitably aiiixed to a base 6 and compr ses side members 7 and 8. a bottom 9 and a. front wall 10,
erein the. description refers tohinged to the top, thus perluitntingeasyaccess to the interior of the casing.
.The side members 7 and 8 are provided with bearing plates 15 andlivliich ai-eariafnged on the outer faces oftgat'tll members. 'lhe plates 15 and 16 are provideld with screw holes 17 and these plates and side members T and 8 are provided with alined Jopenings r19 and 20 to receive the'axle 21 having a square end 22 to receive a crank 23. Mounted on the axle 21 is a reel 24 in the formlofa spool having a central longitudinal bore 25 to receive the axle 2l and provided with end fiangesl 26 formed with inwardly vbeveled edges 27. A
Revolubly mounted immediatelybeneath such reel is a guide roller 28 having end flanges provided with outwardly beveled edges 20 which run in frictional Contact with the beveled edges 27 of the reel 24, one end of the roller being provided with a stub pin ,30 and the other end thereof with a screw 31,
said stub and screw being mounted in corresponding openings 33 in the side members 7 and 8 whereby the guide roller is held in con venient rotatable position. The clothes line 1 is passed downwardly through theslot 34 in the top of the casing and, after having beenpassed under the guide roller 28 and around the reel 24, is attached to the latter by a staple 35 or other equivalent means.
A. ratchet wheel 36 is arranged upon the square end 22 of the reel axle and a pawl 39 pivotally mounted upon a pivot 40 in position to engage the teeth of the ratchet to prevent retrograde'movement et the reel. In
the operation of the device. after the clothes line has been used and it is desirable to `store the same away, the free end of the clothes line is unattached and the crank 23 rotated` thus winding the line around the reel. 'After the line has been completely wound upon the reel. the casing` 4 forms a. suitable protection for the same against the elements.
To unwind the line from the reel. the pawl 39 is disengaged with the ratchet Wheel 36 and the free end of the clothes line passed out to anyconvenient placeto which it is attached when the pawl 39 is again engaged with the ratchet wheel to prevent retrograde movement of the reel.
lt is to be particularly observed that during the operation of winding the rope upon de veel, it must first Vpass over the gillide 55 and a slotted top 11 and lid 13, the lid being l roller 28 and, as this roller rotates in a directween the reel and guide roller with the result that the line will be caused to wind v i'ghtly u en the reel, which is very desirable as is wel known.
Having thus described my invention, what' I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent2 is:-
In combination with a casing, e clothes line reel provided with beveled end flenes revolubly mounted therein, a uide roller or the clothes line to pass under fore windin upon the reel, moun ed beneath the reel an having beveled end `enges to run in contact where with' those of the reel Awhereby the deV roller is caused to rotate in a' reverse ection to the reel and in a direction reverse to the direction in which the line passes durxi the oeretion of winding it upon the y a slight tension is exerted upon that portion of the line between the reel and guide roller to cause the line to tightly wind upon the former, and means for rotating the reel. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IleSSeS.
