Application filed september 2, ,1908. Serial No. 451,421.
To all whom 'it may concern: Y Be it known that I, EUGENE S.- PETERSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico-and State of Virginia, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Reeling Devices, of which the following is'a specification. I I
The present invention relates to an improved reeling device which canbe utilized wherever clothes lines, ropes, or cables-are employed and which furnishes a ready means for taking :in or letting out theLline and: also'provides a water proof housing for the lines when notin use: p
The object of the -i-nvention is the provision of a reeling device which isdsimple and inexpensive its construction, which admits of the line being quickly wound up or unwound as desired, and by-means of {which any desired tension may be placed in the line.-
For a full understandingof the invention and the merits thereof andalso to acquire a knowledge of-the details of construction and the means for effecting theresult, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a line reel embodying the invention, the casing being broken away, Fig. 2 is a horizontalfsectional view portions being shown in full lines, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line3 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 1 is a detail view of a portion of one end of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by' the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention the numeral 1 designates the base of the reeling device, the upper end of the base being detachably connected toa support 2 while the lower end is provided with a slot for the reception of'a staple 3 projecting from the 'supp0rt,the said staple being designed to receive a lock 4: or similar member. In the present instance a pair of eyes 5 project upwardly from the base and detachably engage hook members 6 upon the support,'the eyes being prevented from becoming. disengaged from the hooks while the 'lock 4 is in position. Projecting outwardly from the base 1 is a casing 7 within which the reeling mechanism is housed, the top and bottom of the casingbeing rounded while the front is formed with a transversely disposed slot 8 through which the rope or cable 9 is designedito pass as it 1s wound upono-r unwound from the reel 10. A swinging cover 11 is hinged to the casing 7 so as to be swung over the slot 8 whenthe device is not in use and this cover is provided upon its inner face with a hook 12 for engagement with a loop 9 at the end of the cable, the said hook projecting through the slot when the cover is closed. The bottom 7'"? of, the'casing is hinged at 13 so as to swing outwardly and enable access to be had to th'ereeling mechanism within the interior of the casing The swinging end of the bottom 'Zifis formed with a flange 1 1 which fits against the support 2 when the bottom is swunginto aclosed position, and this flange is, formed with a slot 14 which registers with the slot in the support and also receives the staple 3 so that the lock 1 serves the double function of holding the base against the support and also of holding the bottom of thee'asing'in a closed position. 1
I The reel '10 is'mounted upon-a frame which is secured to the base l and is-housed within the casing'F; This frame comprises a cross piece 15 and the side pieces 16, the said cross piece fitting immediately under the front of the casing and being formed with a slot corresponding ,to and "registering with the 7 slot :8 therein; Oneofathe side pieces 16 fits closely against one side of the casing while the opposite side piece is, slightly spaced from the other side of the casing, a plate 17 which is spaced from the second mentioned side piece being secured to the frame. Mounted between this plate 17 and the side piece 16 is a pair of pinions 18 and 19 which mesh with each other, the pinion 18 being rigid with the reel 10 while the opposite pinion is provided with an angular stud 20 which projects'from the frame immediately under an opening 21 in the side of the casing. A ratchet wheel 22 is also rigid with the reel and a pawl 23 whichis normally held in engagement with the ratchet wheel by a spring 24: serves to cooperate therewith to prevent backward movement of the reel. A cam member 25 is mounted upon the frame and is adapted to engage the pawl 23 and swing the same away from the ratchet wheel 22 to admit of the reel turning freely in either direction. Projecting from this cam member 25 is an angular stud 26 which is located immediately under a second opening 27 in the casing. A handle 28. is utilized for turning either the reel or the cam member and this handle is formed with a socket which is adapted to detachably engage either the angular stud 20 or the angular stud 26. A pointer 30 is applied to the cam member 25 and when it is desired to unwind the cable from the reel, the handle is applied to the stud 26 and turned until the pointer 30 points to a character such as the (0) shown upon the drawings, to indicate that the pawl is not in engagement with the ratchet wheel. The line can then be unwound and stretched in the desired position or utilized for any other purpose. Should it be desired to stretch the line and place it under tension, it is merely necessary to cause the pawl toagain engage the ratchet and then turn the reel, the said pawl slipping over the teeth of the ratchet to admit of the line being wound but engaging with the v teeth of the ratchet wheel to prevent unwinding of the line. When the pawl engages the ratchet wheel, the pointer 30 is opposite some character such as the 0) shown on the drawings and the cable may be again wound upon the reel and housed Within the casing by applying the handle 28 to the angular stud 20. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a reeling device, the combination of a base, a reel carried by the base, a pinion rigid with the reel, a second pinion having an operative connection with the first mentioned pinion and provided with an angular stud, a ratchet rigid with the reel, a pawl adapted to engage the ratchet to prevent movement of the reel in one direction, a cam for moving the pawl into an inoperative position, the said cam being formed with an angular stud, and a detachable handle adapted to be applied either to the angular stud of the pinion or to the angular stud of the cam.
2. In a reeling device, the combination of a base, a frame projecting from the base and formed with a cross bar having an openingtherein, a casing inclosing the frame and independent thereof, the said casing being carried by the base and being formed with an opening corresponding to the opening of the cross bar in the frame, a reel journaled upon the frame and adapted to receive the cable which passes through the before mentioned opening in the frame and the opening in the casing when it is being wound upon or unwound from the reel, means for operating the reel, a cover mounted upon the casing for the opening therein, and means carried by the cover for engaging the end of the cable.
8. In a reeling device, the combination of a support, a base detachably applied to the support, means for locking the base in position against the support, a casing applied to the base and formed with a swinging side which is normally held in a closed position by the before mentioned locking means for holding the base against the support, and a reeling mechanism mounted within the casing.
4. In a reeling device, the combination of a support, a base having one end thereof detachably applied to the support, a locking device for holding the opposite end of the base against the support, a casing carried by the base and formed with a swinging side which is normally held in a closed position by the said locking device, and a reeling mechanism mounted within the casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of witnesses.
