SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,822, dated December 20, 1904. Application filed November 2l, 1903. Serial No. 182,157.

Be it known that I, JOHN J. WALTER, 'a citi- Zen of Switzerland, but having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States.) residing at Philadelphia, in the county of PhiladelphiaJ and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Reels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention 'relates to new and useful improvements in clothes-line reels; and its object is to provide a reel of simple, compact, and durable construction which is adapted to automatically wind a clothes-line thereon and which continually holds the line under tension when the same is in use.

A further object is to provide the reel with a guiding device, whereby the clothes-line is prevented from becoming displaced while being wound on or unwound from the reel.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved reel and showing in dotted lines the coiled spring therein and the clothes-line. Referring' to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 -is a barrel, the base 2 of which is adapted to be secured to a suitable support 3 by means of a screw 4 or any other desired fastening device. Revolubly mounted upon the barrel are two oppositely-arranged disks 5, preferably formed of sheet metal and which are spaced apart by a ring 6, interposed therebetween and secured in place by means of a series of bolts 7 or other suitable fastening devices. The disks are adapted to be retained upon the barrel by meansof a ring 8, fastened upon the outer end thereof. The barrel has a longitudinally extending slot 9 therein, through which projects one end of a spring 10.l which is secured to a pin 11, extending from the base 2. This spring is coiled about the barrel 1, and its other end is fastened to a pin 12, which is secured to the disks 5. Ex-

tending from the base 2 is an arm 13, having` an enlarged head 14, from one face of which project ears 15. In these ears are revolubly mounted pins 16, which extend from the ends of a preferably rectangular frame 17. Guidepulleys 18 are journaled within this frame and are adapted to receive therebetween a clothesline 19. This clothes-line is secured to the reel by inserting one end thereof through one of the disks 5 and knotting it, as shown at 20.

In using the reel the same is turned manually upon the barrel 1 until the spring 10 has been completely tensioned. The clothes-line 19 is then secured to the reel and the reel is released, so as to cause the spring to rotate it and wind the clothes-line thereon. It will thus be seen that when the clothes-line is unwound from the reel the spring 10 will be tensioned, and the clothes-line will therefore be held taut at all times.

The reel is very simple in construction and the parts thereof can mostly be struck from sheet metal.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantagesthereof, and I therefore rcserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a barrel having a slot therein; of oppositely-disposed disks revolubly mounted upon the barrel, a spacing-ring interposed therebetween, a spring secured at opposite ends to the disks and within the barrel, respectively, said spring extending through the slot and around the barrel, and a clothesline secured to one of the disks and adapted to be wound on the spacing-ring.

In a clothes-line reel, the combination with a base having a slotted barrel extending therefrom, and a pin within the barrel; of 0ppositely -disposed disks revolubly mounted upon the barrel, a spacing-ring interposed therebetween, a coiled spring inclosing the barrel and projecting through the slot therein,

said spring being secured at opposite ends to the disk and to the pin, respectively, and e clothes-line secured to one of the disks and normally Wound upon the spacing-ring.

3. In a clothes-line reel the combination with a base having lugs thereon, a revoluble frame mounted between the lugs, and guidepulleys journaled Within the frame; of e slotted barrel extending `from the base, a pin within the barrel, oppositely-'disposed disks revolubly mounted upon the barrel, a spacingring interposed therebetween, and a. coiled spring inclosing the barrel and extending through the slot therein, said spring being interposed between the disks and secured at opposite ends to one of the disks and to the pin, respectively.
