This invention relates to a 'portable burglar alarm for home or general use and its object is to provide a small compact device which may be handily carried about in travelling from place to place and may be quickly inserted in operative positionbetween the edge of a door or window and its casing, and is arranged to set off an alarm should someone attempt to force an entrance from the outside. y
With the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in providing a self-contained bell and spring .mechanismI for sounding said bell, together with a carrier adapted to be inserted between the 'edge of a door or window and its casing or jamb, and a trip or latch arranged to be actuated by the opening of the door or window, to release the spring mechanism and sound the bell. The invention further consists in the particular construction and arrangement hereinafter set forth, and all as pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with y a portion of the bell broken away to disclose the internal operating mechanism;

As shown in the drawings, 1y indicates a suitable cup-shaped base for housing'a spirally lcoiled spring 2, the outer end of Vwhich spring is made fast in any suitable manner, not shown, to said cup and the inner or center end of which spring is secured to a tubular member 3 sleeved upon and rigidly secured to a post- 4 by'a pin 5, said post being rotatively secured at one end to the bottom wall of saidcupv at the axis thereof to turn freely. Formed integral with the upperend of the sleeve 11, is a large gear 15 adapted to mesh with a small gear 16 on a shaft 17 mounted in bearings formed by the disks 8 and 9 laterally of the gear 15, and also secured on` this shaft 17 is a larger'gear v18 Whichlis in mesh with a small gearv 19 on a second shaft 20 mounted between said disks ofthe gear frame laterally ofthe shaft'17. This shaft 20 has secured theretofanotched wheel 21 adapted to be engaged by an escape'- ment lever '22 `which is "pivoted at 23 with one or the othe'r'of` its" ends inicontact Vwith said escapem'ent wheel 21 and said Ilever 22 is provided witha long curved spring armA 24 provided with aclapper or head 25 on its free end to Contact the rim of the bell` 6' and sound the same when the notched wheel 21 is turned to vibrate the lever 22.l
To securely hold the arm- 24 against 4vibrai tion and thus byA thej engagement .ofthe escapement-lever 22 withtthe escapement wheel 21, hold' the train of gearingV against rotation and the spring 2 against unwinding, a Vstiff spring arm 26 is secured to and depends from the disk 9 to engage in- 95 termediate its ends, the inner side of thearm 24 and with astrong spring pressure, press outwardly upon said arm and "firmly'hold its clapper 25 incontact'with thebell rim, thus preventing vibration of the escapement and consequent unwinding of the spring 2 which has previously been Wound up by grasping said Wheel through said train of gearing, it
is onlynecessary to press upon the lower end .of said spring arm 26 and to so press said arm, a pin 27 is mounted in a suitable bearing therefor in a bracket 28 secured to and eX- tending outwardly from the cup 1 opposite the lower'endportioii of said arm 26, the inner end of saidpin contacting thesaid arm.
To move said pin 27 inwardly against the action of said ,spring arm 26 and thus. move said arm away from the arm 24 to permit i rapid vibration thereof and ringing of the bell, a lever 29 is pivoted to said bracket 28, at 30 and is formed withra cam or surface 31 engaging the outer endwof said pin and arranged eccentric tothe pivot 30, so that upon turning ofrsaid lever, the said pin 27 will be forced inwardly. This lever 29 isy also formed 'with a shoulder 32 at one end of Y said camsurface 31 to engage the outer end of said pin 27 and hold said lever with its laterally extending arm 33 eXr tending outwardly from said supporting bracket 28longitudinally of said pin, and said lever is also formed at the opposite end of said cam surface 31 with a notch 34 to receive the outer end of said pin when said cam lever is turned with its operating arm 33 extending at rightV angles to said pin and hold said lever in that position. When said lever 29 is turned to this latter position, the bell will thus continue to ring until the spring 2 becomes unwound or saidlever isr turned .back to its original position.
In order that this bell alarm device may be readily attached to a window or door casing i of the cup l by Yproviding longitudinal slots With the operating arm 33 thereof projecting into the path of swinging movement of ,the free edge of a windowV or door 36 mounted in said casing, a supporting bracket 37 is provided `for the. said alarm device. This bracket 37 is preferably formed of sheet steel and is adjustably Vsecured to the bottom 38 in the bracket to receive screws 39 screwed into screw-threaded holes lin the cup bottom, and one end of this steelstrip forming said bracket, is turned or bent at right angles to' form an end' portion 40 to engage within the space between the edge of the door 36p-and casing 35, and thisend portion is formed with Spurs or sharp teeth 41 to be forced into said casing'and firmly secure said bracket to the casing against being pushed out by the openin thc path of the swinging movement of the edge of the door 36, so that, should the door be forcedopen, said lever-29 will be turned n by the swinging `of the door., and to adapt the device to different door or window casings, the alarm device is adj ustablyv attached to the bracket 37 by means of the screws 391 in the slots 38 of the bracket, so that the cup 1 may be adjusted along Athe bracket to bring the arm 33 inpropei relation to the end 40 of the bracket, which end is engaged within the spacebetween the edge of thel door or window and the casing. .n v n l Y l By this arrangement, a very simple and compact alarm device for the purpose, is pro-` vided, and which device may be readilyY carried about and quickly applied Vto aldoor or window and its casing.

A device for the purpose described in,- cluding a base member,abell carried by said base, operating means in said base and bell for sounding said bell, means for holding and releasing said operating means andincluding a lever arm pivotally attached to said base and extending laterally from saidy base to swing thereon and including means for yieldingly holding saidleverarin in the position to which it is turned, and a bracket secured to said base for holding said device ,with the laterally projecting end of said lever arm in`v the path of movements of a closure.
