oLoTHEsLiNE REEL.
Application led January This invention relates, generally, to iinpiovements in clothes-line reels; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to that class of clothes-line reel-s adapted for indoor use, with a view of pi'oviding the casing in which the line is adapted to beienclosed and the operating member connected with the spindle, upon which the line is to be wound, with ,means for variously maintaining a lixed or locked arrangement of the spindle and its operating mem-ber relative to the main casing or shell of .the device. y
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply .constructed clothes-line reel, which is easily operated for winding a clothes-line upon a spindle, or for unwinding the line therefrom, and at the saine time providing a readily and effectively operating means for maintaining a fixed lor locked relation of the spindle to the main casing or shell of the device.
Other object-s of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be fully understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. l
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel clothes-line reel hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the. novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and part-s, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following speciicat-ion, and then iinally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and which forni an essential part of the said specification. i Y
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothesline reel, showing one embodiment lof the principles of the present invention; Figure 2 is a vertical sectional representation of the same, said section being taken on line 2-2 in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a vertical section of the'device, taken on line 3 3 in Figure 1 and Figure 4 is a front elevation of the clothes-line reel.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the io, i925. seriai No. 1,553.
drawings, the refereiice-c-haracter 1 indicates the main casing or shell of the device which isprefera-bly made of metaland is of cylindrical conformation, the said casingl or lshell. being suitably provided at its rear with ears or wings 2, which are perforated, as at 3, for reception of the fastening screws 41;, or the like, by means of which the device is secured to the woodwork of a wall. At its front, the said casing or shell is provided with suitably disposed perforations 5, or other suitable opening, the purpose of which will presently bemore. fully described. At its open ends, the said casing or shell is provided with marginallyrdisposed ears or lugs 6, which are inserted in correspondingly located slits 8 formed in the end-plates 7, and bent over against said plates for securing the said parts in assembled relation. The said end-plates may also be provided with annular flanges 9 adapted to be brought into embracing relation with th-e marginal edge-portions of the cylindrical casing or shell 1, as shown more particularly in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The said end-plates 7 are also provided with centrally disposed apertures 10 which provide suitable bearings for arrangement therein of a line-receiving spindle 11, as shown. At one end, this spindle is provided with a suitable enlargement 12, or the like` and at its other end it has a-crank-member 13 and a handle 14 for operating the spindle and causing it to rotate in the bearings 10. As shown in said Figure 3, the spindle 11 is of such length that while it is rotatably mounted in said bearings 10, it is also capable of lateral movement for the purpose to be presently described. The end-plate 7 nearest the crankmeinber 13 is provided with one or more holes or perforatioiis 15, into andout of which may be moved the lock-stud end 16 of the handlepin 17, when lateral movement of the spindle is produced by an operator, and whereby the spindle may be locked in a fixed position, or may be rotated at the will of the operator, as will be evident.
The spindle 11 is also provided with a hole or perforation 18, preferably in alinement with one of the previously mentioned holes or perforations 5 in the front of the shell or casing 1, for passage therethrough of the endportion 20 of a wash-line 19, the line having been passed through the holes or perforations 5, and its other end-portion 21 being tied, as at 22, to said end-portion 20 of the line, all
the clothes are to be suspended from the line Y for drying. By means of the crank of the spindle, the wash-line is then pulled taut by reeling upon theV spindle, and when taut, the
spindle is pushed in a lateral direction to. Abring the lockestud end 1G of thehandle-pin 17 into holding engageniient 'with one of the said holes or perforations 15 in the end-plate 7 nearest the crank-member 13, thereby preventing lany turning of the spindle, as Will be evident. After the clothes have been removedfrom the line, the spindle is moved laterally inthe opposite direction, so asto Withdraw the lock-stud end 16 from said hole or perforation 15, to permit turning of the spindle by means of its crank, and to thereby fully wind the line upon that portion of the spindle Within the said shell or casing 1. n
Of course, I am aware that some changes may be vmade in the general arrangements and combinations of the various parts of the devices, as Well as in the details of the construction of the parts of the same, Without' departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specificah tion. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and eombinations of the various parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine inyin said plates and provided With a rtransversei ly extending perforation normally in alinement with one ofthe perforations in the shell, said spindle. being of greater length than the shell and having its opposite ends extending beyond said end plates whereby the spindle is capable of axial movement in its bearings, a crank handle carried bythe spindle at one end thereof, the end plate Vatthat end being provided With a plurality of perforations, and a stud carried by said handle and adapted to engageone of said perforations When the spindle is moved axially thereby to prevent rotation of the spindle. y
In testimony, that I claim Vthe invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of January, 1925.
JULIUS STROMBACH.
