Abstract
A compact clothes line comprises a cylindrical housing and rotatable reel 6 for winding the clothes line 14. Reel 6 is provided with winding handle 3 which folds out in use, and when not in use folds flat against the side 1 of the housing to engage with one of several cavities 7 in the side of the housing to lock reel 6, preventing further rotation. Cavities 9 in the side wall 21 may be provided for storing clothes pegs 12, and may include central walls 8. Both the line 14 and housing may be equipped with a hook or clip 15, 19 for attaching both ends of the compact clothes line to a suitable point.

COMPACT TRAVEL CLOTHES LINE
The present invention is a cylindrical drum containing a reel upon which is wound a flexible, retractable clothes line. The drum also contains storage cavities around it's periphery which hold pegs for use with the said clothes line.
It is common for people to hand wash certain items of clothing when staying away from home for extended periods. Often when staying in hotel rooms a cold water hand wash solution is used for washing and then after the excess water had been wrung out of the clothing items, they are then draped about bathrooms and bedrooms on chair backs and radiators or on any other convenient surface in order that they may dry.
This practise results in unsightly hotel rooms and presents difficulties for cleaning staff. At it's worst one sees clothing draped across balcony rails presenting a view of the hotel or accommodation building from the outside which is less than desirable.
A number of solutions to these problems have been proposed in the art. The most common solution to be found being that some owners of accommodation or hospitality type buildings provide drying facilities somewhere in the building but often a cost is incurred in using these facilities. It is however common for guests in such a building to ignore these facilities and opt for the convenience of drying things within their own rented space.
Another common solution is for the building owner to provide a retractable clothes line within the bathroom area of hotel rooms. When this solution is preferred the type of device is usually of the sort which is attached to a wall at a high point in the room and a horizontal bar can be pulled out from the unit.
Attached to the horizontal bar are usually several parallel clothes lines and the bar is extended to the opposite wall to which it can then be temporarily secured to hooks or similar devices. These devices are often found over the bath tub, they are spring loaded so that when disconnected from the opposite wall they automatically retract and rewind the clothes line back into an internal reel.
Other devices to be found in the art contain just one reel they are often secured to a wall permanently and they operate in exactly the same way as the devices described above. Invariably they are equipped with a retractable line which re-winds onto an internal reel which reel is driven to retract the line by an internal spring of some type. A ratchet or other device is usually provided to override the retracting spring force and there are often devices which are manual controls to either lock or release the extended line.
The devices so far described, being the majority of the art are often complex mechanical devices with many moving parts including coil or clock type springs, ratchets, locks and re-wind controls. Because of this they are expensive to produce and unreliable in operation, particulaily because they are often required to work in the steamy confines of a bath or shower room.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome the difficulties found in the existing art by providing a retractable portable clothes line which is manually controlled but which has the minimum of mechanical parts, does not contain ratchets or springs, cannot be harmed by the presence of steam and has storage facilities for pegs suitable for use with the device.
According to the invention there is provided a compact travel clothes line consisting of a cylindncal drum consisting of two substantially flat surfaces separated by a side wall which houses a reel upon which a clothes line is wound.
Retraction of the extended clothes line is accomplished by use of a winding handle connected to a reel contained in the said drum. This handle folds out when in use and when not in use folds flat against the side of the drum where its distal end engages with one of several cavities in the side of the drum. The said engagement preventing the further rotation of the drum.
According to a second aspect of the invention, the said drum also contains cavities extending inwards from the said side wall which cavities in use can receive a clothes peg and which cavities contain a retaining wall onto which the said clothes peg can be clipped for storage purposes.
According to a third aspect of the invention a moving spring clip is provided at the end of the clothes line for the purpose of securing the extended clothes line when in use to any suitable point.
According to a forth aspect of the invention a stationary spring clip is provided which extends from the main body of the drum on a short flexible cord for the purpose of attaching the drum to any suitable object.
The invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the drawings in which, Figure 1 Is a cross section of the device showing the section described at xxinfigure2 Figure 2 Is a side view showing the top plate of the device and also shows the position where the cross sectional view shown in figure 1 is positioned.
Figure 3 Is a side view showing the base plate Figure 4 Shows a cross section taken at yy in figure 1 and illustrates the cavities which are intended to house the pegs and the retaining walls on to which the pegs are clipped.
Referring now to figure 1, Top plate 1, is connected to base plate 2 by side wall 21. A handle 3, is attached to reel cleat 4 which is tensioned by resilient member 5. This assembly is connected to reel 6 and rotation of the reel 6 is prevented by the folding of handle 3 so that the distal end of the handle is contained in one of the cavities 7 which are provided in the top plate 1.
Cavities 9 are provided around the periphery of the drum which extend downwards into the drum from the side wall 21. Within each cavity is a retaining wall 8 on to which clothes pegs may be attached for storage. When in use the ends of the pegs extend into the cavity 18 so that they may be reached for removal.
A bolt 13 extends from the base plate and engages the reel cleat connector 10 to secure the reel cleat 4 to the assembly.
Pegs are shown in figure 4 11 mounted on to the retaining walls 8. The ends of these pegs are also shown at 12 in figure 1.
Figure 1 also shows that the reel 6, contains the clothes line 14 and on its distal end is a clip 15, which extends through opening 16 in the side wall. Clip 19 is attached to a fixed length line 20 attached to the the side wall of the drum at 17.
The additional figures 2 and 3 are provided for clarity and shows the top plate I and the base plate 2 respectively. It can also be seen from figure 2 that figure 1 is a cross section at xx.
In use the clip 19 is passed around any suitable object and clipped on to the line 20 so as the secure the body of the device.
The handle 3 is folded out to disengage the cavity 7 and the clip 15 is pulled out to extend the clothes line.
The clip 15 is then passed around any suitable object to secure the line by clipping the line to itself once it has passed around whatever it is to be secured to.
Slack is taken up by winding back the handle 3 until the line is tight and then the handle is folded back so that its' distal end engages with one of the holes 7 in top plate I. This operation locks the reel against further rotation and prevents the line from slackening. This avoids the need for complex ratchet and spring arrangements.
This example is just one example of how the invention may be implemented and this specification is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claims.
