Patented May 26, K1951? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,639,689 PASTE APPLICATOR FOR WRAPPING PAPER Louis Derr, Jr., Battle Creek, Iowa I Application July 27, 1950, Serial No. 176,183 2 claims. (o1. 11s-#415) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in paste applying devices for wrapping paper and more particularly to a device for applying paste to the uppermost sheet of a stack as it is wrapped.
An object of the invention is to provide means for holding the remaining sheets of the stack stationary and without danger of wrinkling as the upper sheet is being wrapped.
Another object is to provide an adjustable holder for stacks of paper of various size.
A further object is to provide a paste applying tank of novel construction to insure applying paste to the corners of the paper.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on aline 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of the tank; and
Figure '7 is a perspective View of the slide.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a base or table supported on feet 6.
The table is of rectangular shape and is formed at its ends with longitudinal slots 'I and 8 to adjustably receive set screws 9 and I0 for holding front and rear transverse stop boards II and I2 on top of the table against the ends of a stack of wrapping paper I3. The side edges of the stack of paper are held between a pair of upstandng posts I4 rising from the table and having their lower ends threaded into the rear feet 6 to reinforce the posts.
A trough-shaped tank I5 for holding paste or cement is positioned transversely of the table on top of the paper at the rear edge of said stack and is formed with forwardly inclined end portions I6 exposing the rear top corners of the stack and having vertical holes I1 in which the posts are received for free vertical sliding movement of the tank to maintain the tank resting on the paper as the stack is consumed.
The bottom of tank I5 is formed with a paste dispensing slot I8 which also extends into the end portions I6. The bottom of the tank I5 at the rear edge of slot I8 is ground flat, as shown at I9, and said bottom at the front edge of the slot is toothed, as shown at 20.
A slide 2I comprises a transverse bar 22 having heads 23 at its ends and formed with vertical grooves 24 sliding on the end edges of rear stop board I2 with the heads 23 overlying the stack of paper and pointed pins 25 are held in the heads by set screws 26 in a rearwardly inclined position and with their lower pointed ends 2l projecting below the heads to engage and hold the rear exfposed corners of the uppermost sheet of paper.
In the operation of the device, a stack of wrapping paper I3 is placed on table 5 between posts I4 and stop boards II and I2 adjusted against the front and rear edges of the paper. Slide 2l is then placed on rear board I2 so that the pins 25 penetrate the uppermost sheet of paper and bite into the next lower sheet to hold the latter when the uppermost sheet is pulled forwardly, the rear edge of the upper sheet being ripped by the pins while holding the lower sheet.
Tank I5 is placed on posts I4 to slide downwardly thereon and to rest on the paper, and paste or cement is then placed in the tank to apply the paste to the paper.
As the upper sheet is pulled forwardly, the rear edge thereof is coated with paste, the toothed front edge 20 of the dispensing slot enabling the paste to spread onto the paper while the flat rear edge I9 of the slot prevents excess paste from working onto the paper. The forwardly inclined ends I6 of the tank, in addition to exposing the rear corners of the stack, also keep the paste from working over the side edges of the stack,
while spreading the paste to the full width ofv the paper.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same 3 is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A paste applicator comprising a table adapted to support a stack of sheets of paper thereon for pulling of the sheets forwardly oif the stack, a rearstop onsaid table jfor vertically aligningthe rear edges of the sheets in the stacks, a slotted paste dispensing tank extending across the rear edge of the stack and having forwardly inclined ends extending diagonally of l'the rear edges of the stack to expose the rear upper corners of the stack and being connected to the table for vertical sliding movement zof the A tank downwardly onto the stack, a gravity slide on the rear ystop extending across the stack and rlfiaving forwardly extending lateral heads overlying the rear exposed corners of the stack behind said ends of the tank, and paper holding means carried by said heads in the rear of said inclined ends and penetrating the uppermost sheets at the rear corners of the stack.
2. A paste applicator according to claim 1 wherein said means includes rearwardly and downwardly inclined pins weighted by said slide 1;@ penetrate said rilppermestksheets.
