FIG. 8.
FIG. 10.
INVENTOR Richard H. Cafletf ATTORNEY:
United States Patent HOLDER FOR ROLL SHEET DISPENSER Richard H. Catlett, 410 Somerset Ava, Richmond 26, Va. Filed Mar. 20, 1959, Ser. No. 800,895 9 Claims. (Cl. 225-77) The present invention relates to a new and improved holder for roll sheet dispensers. This application is a eontinuation-in-part of my co-pending application Serial No. 790,739, filed February 2, 1959, now abandoned.
An important object is to provide a simple, eflicient, compact and economical holder for a carton dispenser, in which is rotatable a roll sheet of material such as aluminum foil, paper and the like, so as to conveniently facilitate the withdrawal of a predetermined amount of the sheet material from the dispenser and the severing of the same at a minimum expenditure of time and effort.
A further object consists in providing a polygonalshaped dispenser arranged to be releasably carried by the holder, and in which the dispenser is provided with an exposed advertising surface on which may be printed, or otherwise displayed, the name of the manufacturer of the roll material, or other suitable printed matter, so as to enhance the attractive appearance of the dispenser and in order that the name of the manufacturer, when the parts are assembled, will be conspicuously displayed and visible when the dispenser is in operation.
Another object comprehends the provision of means on the front and rear sides of the holder, for co-acting with complementary means on the dispenser for releasably maintaining the dispenser in a fixed position when carried by the holder.
Dispensers, packages or boxes for sheet roll material vary as to length, width and height, depending upon the particular dimensions of the sheet roll material. Accordingly, a still further object is to provide an adjustable holder to accommodate dispensers of varying sizes so that the holder will be completely flexible in application.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying claims and drawlngs.

i'ice 2 11 (FIG. 2) of any desired length and width. The holder 10 is shown made of one-piece and having the ends of the base 11 bent upwardly therefrom to form the end portions or uprights 12 that terminate in the outwardly and laterally disposed flanges 13 substantially parallel to the base 11. The flanges 13 may be providedwith the openings 14 for detachably connecting the holder 11 to the underside of any suitable supporting structure, such as the bottom 15 of a kitchen cabinet 16, by fastening means such as the screws 17. The base 11 and the confronting end portions 12. thereof may be provided with the spaced parallel reenforcing front and rear grooves or indentations 18 and 19 respectively, so as to impart the desired rigidity to the holder when the parts are assembled.
The holder 10 has open front and rear sides and co-acts with the bottom of the cabinet 15 to provide a closed top, and also co-acts with the base 11 to form a recess or space for releasably receiving a roll sheet dispenser 20 which may be square in cross-section (FIG. 4) and of substantially the same length as the base 11, so as to rest thereon and be confined between the confronting end portions 12 when the parts are assembled (FIG. 1). The base 11 has extending outwardly from the rib 18 a flat projection or lip 21 which may be formed with the spaced serrated edges 22 (FIG. 2) for facilitating the severing of a predetermined portion 23 of the aluminum foil or roll material from the dispenser 20 (FIG. 4). The base 11 and lip 21 are preferably formed with openings or perforations 24. The openings 24 in the base serve to disengage the dispenser from the shoulder 29, while the openings 24 in the lip 21 are for loosening the end portion 23 of the roll material in order to facilitate pulling it forward. Addi tiona-lly, these openings impart lightness to the holder.
The confronting end portions 12 that extend upwardly from the base 11 have vertically disposed spaced front edges 25 and rear straight edges 26 Each of the front edges 25 has an inwardly extending flange 27 that terminates upwardly in a rearwardly extending lug or finger 28. The flanges 27 terminate short of the base 11 for a purpose subsequently to be described. The rear side of the base 11 has an upwardly extending shoulder or rib 29 (FIG. 4) that terminates in an outwardly and rearwardly extending end portion 30. The flanges or stop means 27, instead of being integral with the end portions 12, may be separate members suitably carried or connected to the base.
The dispenser 29 is of such length and width as releasably to be supported on the base 11 and snugly fits between the end portions 12 and, as shown, is of substantially square shape in cross-section (FIG. 4) so as to be formed with a front exposed vertical surface 31 having a rearwardly extending shont lower flap 32 (FIG. 4) positioned in overlapping relationship with the bottom side 33 of the dispenser so as to form a clearance or passage 34 therebetween, through which extends the free end portion 23 of the sheet of roll material, such as the roll of aluminum foil 35 that is rotatably positioned within the dispenser, so that a predetermined portion thereof, such as the end portion 23, may be fed through the passage 34 and a desired length thereof, severed by the serrations 22 on the front lip 21. p
The lower ends of the vertical flanges 27 are spaced above the outwardly extending lip 21 (FIG. 4) so that the end portion 23 of the roll material passes easily through the passage 34 so as to overlap the lip and be removed from the roll 35 in any desired length. The holder is connected to the bottom of the cabinet so as to be spaced from the rear thereof in order to allow the dispenser 20 to be easily inserted or removed from the When the dispenser is initially inserted into the holder, the front thereof will be brought into abutting engagement with the space flanges 27 and the fingers 28 will overlap and engage the top side 36 of the dispenser (FIG. 4). At the same time, the rear side 36 of the dispenser 20 will engage the shoulder 29 so that the latter co-acts with the flanges 27 and fingers 2-8 releasably to maintain the dispenser in a fixed position. In this position it will be observed that the exposed front surface 31 of the dispenser may have printed or otherwise applied thereto, any suitable advertising matter, such as the name or trademark 37 of the manufacturer of the roll material (FIG. I), in order that it may be easily observed when the parts are assembled.
Thus, it will be seen that the holder 19 provides means for releasably mounting or positioning a roll dispenser in a suitable and convenient operative position, and in such manner that the name of the product or the manufacturer of the same may be conspicuously displayed and the attention of the user directed to it during the operation of the device.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in FIG- URES to inclusive, an adjustable holder is provided for receiving dispensers, packages, boxes and the like of varying sizes. As shown, the numeral 40 indicates the adjustable holder which has a base 41 formed of the sections 42 and 43 (FIG. 6) which normally are in abutting engagement at 44. The sections 42 and 43 of the base have outwardly extending lips 37 provided at their outer edges with serrations 38 and at their inner abutting ends with recesses which co-act to form: a finger opening 39. An extension plate 45 has elongated slots 46 between which is an opening 47 arranged to register with opening 39 (FIG. 9). The extension plate 45 engages the underside of the sections 42 and 43 so as to overlap the same, and each of these sections has an opening 48 through which extends a threaded bolt 49 that also projects through one of the slots 46 so as to receive a nut 50 for adjustably clamping the sections 42 and 43 of the base to the extension plate 45.
The outer ends of each of the adjustable sections 42 and 43 of the base has an upwardly projecting end portion 51 provided with an inwardly extending flange 52 (FIG. 5) and which may terminate in an outwardly and laterally disposed end flange 53 for connecting the base to a suitable support, such as the underside of a kitchen cabinet 54 by any suitable means, such as the screws 55. The outer end portions 51 of the base sections 42 and 43 are of such length or height as to be capable of accommodating the largest size of dispenser used for carrying rolls of sheet material.
In order that the holder 40 may readily accommodate dispensers, packages or boxes, which carry the rolls of sheet material, and which may vary as to width, length and height, the base 41 of the holder is arranged to support a pair of spaced elongated clips or fingers 56, each of which terminates at one end in a laterally and outwardly projecting yieldable arm. 57 having a flared or inclined end portion 58. The clips 56 project outwardly and rearwardly from the bot-tom of the base, and each is provided with an elongated slot 59, which registers with aligned opening in an adjacent section of the base 4%, so as to receive a threaded clamping bolt 60 arranged to releasably secure the clip 56 in a fixed position by the wing nut 61 threaded to the bolt 60.
A pair of vertically spaced retaining clips 62, similar in shape to the clips 56, serve to co-act with the clips 56 to releasably secure dispensers of different dimensions within the holder. Each clip 62 has an elongated slot 63, as shown in dotted line FIGURE 5, which is arranged to register with an opening 64 (FIG. 8) in the adjacent flange 52, so as to receive a threaded stud bolt 65 that extends through the slot 63 and is clamped in a fixed position by a wing nut 66. Each of the vertical clips 62 has a lateral transverse arm at one end 75 that terminates in an inclined or flared end 76 (FIG. 8). The base 41 of the holder is provided with spaced front grooves or 4 beads 67 and rear grooves or beads 68 (FIG. 8), which extend around the bottom and the sides of the holder so as tostiffen the same. The extension plate 45 is also formed with a longitudinal groove or head 69 that fits within the groove 67 so as to assist in properly positioning the plate 45 on the base when the parts are assembled. The front edge of the extension plate 45 is preferably beveled at 70 (FIG. 9) so as to constitute an extension of the beveled cutting edge 71 on the lip 37 (FIG. 7).
In operation, assuming the holder is to be used to support a dispenser 72 that carries a small roll of sheet material (FIG. 8), the pair of horizontal lips 56 and vertical lips 62 will be adjusted by the associated thumb nuts so that the arms 57 on the horizontal lips 56 will engage the lower inner ends of the small dispenser 72, while the arm 75 of the vertical clips 62 will engage the upper corner portions of the dispenser 72, in order to firmly maintain the same in a fixed position within the holder. Similarly, if the holder is used with one of the largest dispensers 73 (FIG. 8), the pairs of clips 56 and 62 are lengthened so as to assume the position shown in dotted lines in FIGURE 8, in order to engage the rear bottom and forward upper sides of the dispenser 73.
Thus, it will be seen that the adjustable holder 40 is provided with means for readily accommodating dispensers, packages, and boxes that carry sheet roll material of various dimensions, and which may be easily adjusted at a minimum expenditure of time and effort to any desired size. The aligned finger openings 39 and 47 provide means for readily withdrawing the outer end portion of the roll sheet material so that it may be severed from the remaining portion thereof.
It will be noted, that in both forms of the invention, the holder insures the sheet roll material being maintained in a sanitary condition at all times, and also prominently displays the name of the product or manufacturer. Additionally, a sharp cutting edge is provided for freeing the outer end of the sheet material or foil, so that it may be easily withdrawn and severed from the holder in any desired length.
It will be understood that the forms of the invention shown are merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as come within the scope of the following claims.
