J. G. FLEMING GUMMING DEVICE Filed June 16', 1924 Inventor LEA/7 Gorfdor? Merry/Z9 a new and useful Improvements in a Gum- Patented Mar. 2,1926.
UNITED STATES JOHN eonnon FLEMING, or TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
GUMMING DEVI GE.
Application filed June 16, 1924. Serial No. 720,322.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JorINGonnoN FLEM- ING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented. certain ming Device, as described in the follow- ,ing specification and illustrated in the ac= companying drawings, the same.
The principal objects of the invention are to facilitate the work of attaching labels and bands to articles of merchandiseand to dispense with the expensive and disagreeable operation of applying gum to the labels, bands or wrappers in the manufacture of same.
A still further object is to obviate the inconveniences and loss in storinga supply of gummed labels or wrappers.
The principal feature of the invent-ion consists in the novel construction of a gum feeding member and in the arrangement of a support therefor, whereby'said member will apply gum in a limited quantity to bands, strips or labels stacked thereunder, and whereby the gum feeding member may be readily moved out of operation or returned to an operating position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gumming device. Figure 2 is a longitudinal mid-sectional view.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 isa side elevational detail showing the position of the gum holder when not in use.
It has been the custom in the packaging of certain classes of goods to place a band around them and these bands have been gummed at one end and when used require to be moistened. The operation of gumming one end of a paper strip is expensive and difiicult to perform and the present invention has for its principal object to dis pense entirely with the pre-gunnning of such strips and to provide a device which will efiectively apply the gum as the strip is used.
In the construction herein shown the base 1 is preferably formed of stamped or sheet metal, though it may be of wood or any that form part of other suitable material and at one end thereseauetl to the t p bracket 2 provided.
bracket to hold the post in with a pair-of parallelly arranged perpen dicular lugs S.
A pin 4 extends horizontally between the lugs and on this pin is rotatably mounted having a'recess 6 therein in which is'located a 0011 spring 7 and a steel ball which ongages a hole in the adjacent lug of the U the vertical position. a
The bracket 2 forms a stop for the paper strips 9 which are to be gummed and which are stacked on the base 'to' any. desirable height.
holes are arranged a suitable distance apart. and feed the fluid gum on to thepaper strips 9 stacked thereunder.
The receptacle 11 is formed with a loop 13 slidably encircling the post 5 so that the receptacle slides freely thereon following the stacked paper strips as each successive one is removed.
The upper portion of the receptacle is cut away from the top and front side to give access to the interior for placing the gum and for removing the gum or cleansing the receptacle and a temporary cover 14 is provided which fits between the side walls of the receptacle and rests upon the ledges 15.
An adjustable end guide 16 is arranged on the base and is adapted to abut the outer end corner of the paper strips being gummed. v H in the use of: th1s device, the receptacle is loaded with gum and. the cover M is placed in position to keep the air from contact therewith. The receptacle is raised to any desirable height upon the post 5 and a stack of strips to be gummed are placed,
thereunder between the guides 10 and 16.
The operator withdraws the strips one ata time from beneath the gum receptacle and as the strip is withdrawn the gum feeds through the various holes and places a lurality of strips of gum upon the sur ace. The surface when thus gulninedis ready to be placed the article it is; to enclos 00 a post 5, the bottom end encircling the pin,
and the opposite end overlaps the free end and is immediately secured. V
llhen the operator desires to temporarily discontinue the use of the strips the gum receptacle may be very readily placed out of commission by simply swinging the post 5 on its pivot outwardly and the receptacle is then turned to ahorizontal position so that the gum flows away from the holes and the device will be ready for immediate service when required. his feature of stopping the flow of the gum is extremely simple but very effective.
Vhat I claim as my invention is: 1. In a gumming device, a gum receptacle having feeding openings, and means" for supporting said gum receptacle adapted to be operated to remove the receptacle fronr engagement with the sheets to be gummed and coincidentally interrupting the feeding of the gum. Y
2. A gumming device, comprising, a base, a post pivotally supported on the base and extending in avertical position, a gum receptacle slidably mounted on said post and having a plurality of feeding openings, said post along with said slidable receptacle being adapted to be swung away from said base into a horizontal position to interrupt the feeding of the gum.
3. A gumming device, comprising, a base, a bracket secured at oneend of the base, a
post pivotally mounted in said bracket, a
ing feeding openings in one end and formed with a loop slidably encircling said post.
f. A gummin device, eomprlsing a base,
a post pivotally mounted at one end of the base and adapted to extend in, a vertical position, an oval shaped receptacle having an opening in one side and holes in the apex for feeding the gum, and a cover extending into the receptacle through the opening in the side and adapted to close the lower half.
