Description

- J. J. STOPPLE.
GAR COUPLING.
Patented Aug. 22
INVENTOR fl/Z71 I v ATTORNEYS WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
JOHN J. STOPPLE, OF BELLEVILLE, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,241, dated August 22, 1882. I Application filed July 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that 1, JOHN J. STOPPLE, a citizen of the United States, resident at Belleville, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gar-Couplings; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention in a perspective view. Fi 2 is a horizontal section taken through the two sections of the link, showing one fastened firmly on the rod and the other put on loosely.
This invention has relation to car-couplings; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the hinged sections forming a coupling-link and the transversely-extended rod on which said sections are hinged, one
7 section being fast on the rod and the other loose, and the rod being extended on each side of the link to form handles, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates that section of the link which is designed to project outward from the mouth of a draw-head to enter that of an approaching draw-head as two cars are nearing each other for conplin 1) represents that section of the link which is secured in the first draw-head by means ot'the coupling-pin. These two sections are made in U form, with their ends toward each other, said ends being formed with perforations or eyes 0 0, through which passes a transverse rod, d, connecting the sections by a hinge-joint. The section b is loose on the rod d, so that the latter can turn in its eyes 0; butthe eyes ofthe section a are secured rigidly to the rod, so that when the rod is turned the section a will turn with it. The ends of the rod 12 are laterally extended beyond the sides of the link, so as to be within easy reach at the sides of the car, and the extremities are bent, as indicated at e, to form handles, whereby the rod and its attached link-section a can be readily turned so as to direct said link-section into the mouth of the draw-head of the car which is to be coupled.
The object of the invention is to obviate all liability of getting the hands crushed in guiding the links in coupling cars, and also to prevent the link from being broken in case it should be misguided in the coupling operation.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18- a A coupling-link consisting of two sections hinged on a transversely-extended rod, one section being fast and the other loose on the rod, and said rod being extended on each side of the link to form handles, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. STOPPLE.
