SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,151, dated August 22, 1882, Application filed July 10, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN P. EDMoNns, of Jacksborough, in the county of Campbell and State of Tennessee, have invented a new Iny improved derrick when unfolded or extended, ready for use; and Fig. 2, a side view of the same when folded or closed.

A A and B B indicate the legs of the derrick, constructed in pairs, and with the legs in each pair diverging downwardly from each other, and suitably connected by stays a a and blocks b b to give them the necessary strength and broad or firm support on the ground.

Pivoted, as at d, to or within the upper portion of the legs B B is an inner brace, (3, which, when the derrick is extended, engages by a jaw or notch, e, in the lower portion of its opposite end with a bolt, f, uniting the upper ends of the legs A A; and pivoted to the outside of one of the legs A, as at g, is a similar outer brace, O, havinga jaw or notch, e, which engages with a bolt,f, in a bracket, h, on the outside of the upper portion of one of the legs B. These braces (l U are pivoted together by a bolt, 1', where they cross each other, and carryin between them on said bolt a pulley, D, for the hoisting-rope K.

Arranged between the legsAA, at a convenient distance from the ground, is a Windlass, E, on and from which said rope is wound and unwound, said Windlass being actuated by a gearwheel, m, and pinion a, and having a pawl, 0, which is thrown into lock with the wheel m when it is required to hold the load at any desired elevation. The rope K passes from the Windlass E over a pulley, F, arranged between the legsA A, on the joint-pin g, and from thence over the central lifting-pulley, D, and is provided at its lower or free end with a liftinghook, 1', or other suitable attachment, to which may be hitched other ropes or appliances for carrying and securing the load, according to the work to be done. Thus, when the derrick is used for taking oft or putting on wagon-beds the main or hoisting rope K may be connected with a series of ropes having books on their ends. For loading and unloading logs and various articles of merchandise, slings or different attachments may be used.

The derrick is not restricted to any particu lar use,butit admits ofa wagon passing readily in between it when necessary.

The hooking braces O U holdthe legs A A and B B firmly at their set distance apart when the derrick is unfolded and extended, as shown in Fig. 1; but when said braces are disengaged from the boltsff, onto orover which they hook, the derrick may be closely folded, and is readily portable, or may be stowed away in a small space or compass by the shutting of the one pair oflegs, A A, against the other pair ot'legs, B B,and the upright position which the braces G 0 then assume, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1 The combination, with the derrick-legs A A and B B, of the booking braces G U", pivoted respectively to said legs Aaud B, the boltsff, with and from which said braces engage and disengage, the pivot i, uniting said braces intermediately of their length, and the hoistingpulley D, essentially as shown and described.

2. The combination of the windlass E, the derrick-legs AA and B B, the. hooking and crossing braces O C, united by an intermediate pivot, z", the pivots dg, the boltsff, and the pulleys F D, all arranged for operation in relation with each other substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
