IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR HA'ND-SATCHELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,735, dated May 14, 1878; application filed April 10, 1878.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. HUNTER, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Hand-Satchels and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a satchel provided with my improved safety attachment. Fig. 2 is a like View of the same with the chain-lock disconnected from its staple and ready to be attached to any article, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said parts with the said chain and one end of the handle disconnected.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention, is to enable hand-Satchels to be easily and quickly attached-to a car-seat, a Shawl, an overcoat, or other like article, so as to prevent its removal during the temporary absence of its owner; to which end it consists, principally, in combining with the handle of a satchel a safety-chain, which, at one end, is attached to or upon said handle, and at its opposite end is provided with a haSp-lock, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

It consists, further, in rendering the handle part of the safety attachment available by connecting one end of said handle with the satchel by means of a spring-catch, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

It consists, finally, in the safety attachment constructed and combined with the satchel, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A and B represent the hinged jaws of a hand-satchel of usual construction, to or with the first of which jaws is connected a handle, 0, by means of two rings, D, that pass through openings in the ends of said handle, and are attached to said jaw in the usual manner. At one end of the handle 0, below the point of its attach.-

ment to the ring D, is Secured one end of a chain, E, which from thence extends outward and downward along the jaw A, and at its opposite end is provided with a hasp-lock, F, that enables said chain to be connected with a staple, G, which is secured to and projects outward from said jaw at or near the point of the pivotal connection of the latter with the jaw B.

Inusing the satchel while traveling, when it is necessary to leave a seat, the lock F may be disconnected from the staple G, the chain E passed around the arm of the seat, and said lock fastened'upon the nearest ring D, by which means the removal of said satchel will be prevented.

The satchel may, in like manner, be fastened to any fixed article in a room, or to a coat, by passing the chain through one of the button-holes of the latter; but if it were necessary that several articles should be fastened together and to said satchel, said safety-chain would be too short to enable the same to be done.

To remedy such defect, the end of the handle O,- to which is attached the safety-chain E, is connected with its ring D by means of a spring catch or hook, c, which permits of the easy disconnection of said handle from said ring, after which the available length of said chain is doubled, and it can be passed through or around several articles. I

In order that the chain E may be caused to maintain its position upon the corner of the jaw A, two lugs, a, project outward from said. corner, and between said lugs is left a space that receives and contains said chain, and from which the latter cannot pass while thelockF is connected with the staple G,

The safety attachment described is inexpensive, and, when not employed for the purpose designed, occupies no space that would be available for other purposes, and in no manner interferes with the ordinary use of the satchel.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 1. In combination with the handle of a Satchel, a safety-chain which at one end is at- ASSIGNOR TO HIM- tached to or upon said handle, and at its 013 posite end is provided with a hasp-lock, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with a hand-satchel, a handle which has one of its ends connected with the same by means of a spring-catch, and to such detachable end has attached a safetychain and hasp-lock, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

3. In combination with the hinged jaw A of the hand-satchel, the handle 0, provided at one end with a spring-catch, a, the connectingrings D, the safety-chain E, the spring-lock F, and the staple Gr, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
