Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
IRA SMITH, on TOMHANNOUK, NEW roan.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOlST'lNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part 01" Letters Patent No. 137,152, datcdMarch 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA SMITH, of Tomhannook, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap and simple machinefor hoisting weights, for farmers use, and other purposes; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
The drawing represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a machine constructed according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is a projecting arm. B is the post, and O is the brace. These three parts are connected together, and the post is attached to the side of a building or other fixture by hinges D D, so that the arm will swing like the aim of the ordinary crane. E is the hoisting-wheel, supported by a shaft or arbor, F, near the outer end of the arm. The rim of this wheel is grooved, or lugs G are attached to the sides to the wheel E, around which it is wound, as represented in the drawing. J is a wheel on the arbor F, which revolves with the main Wheel E. K is a belt or rope, which is wound around the Wheel J as the main wheel is revolved. L is a grapple, which is attached to the article to be lifted.
The power applied may be greatly increased by means of the crank-wheel I, so that a small boy may raise a heavy weight.
This machine is constructed mainly of wood, and may be made by-any one acquainted with the use of tools, as no cogged gearing is em ployed.
This machine may be employed in loading and unloading cars at railroad stations and vessels at the dock, as well as wagons at the farmers door. It is cheaply made and easily repaired when out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hoistingmachine consisting of the parts A, B, and U, wheels F and J, and belts or ropes H and K, with the crank-wheel I, when the same are combined and arranged to operate as and for the purposes described.
' IRA SMITH.
