2 Glaims.
This invention relates to paint applying de' vices, more particularly of the type for applying a pattern to a wall or like surface.
It is among the objects of the invention to readily be disassembled for cleaning and may be used by even an unskilled workman toapplya pattern on a relatively large wall or like surface without need for stopping. to replenish the paint supply and with which patterns in several colors may be applied.
According to the invention these objects are accomplished by the arrangement. and combination of elements hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

Referring now to the drawings, the paint applying device desirably comprises a paint reservoir desirably in the form of an'elongated trough which has parallel end walls I2. and |31, and parallel side walls l4 and |5,.one. of said walls, illustratively wall l:5.having a handle. [5
extending outwardly therefrom.
The reservoir desirably has a plurality of compartments ll therein formed by means of' spaced separator plates or partitions 1-8 and [3 extending transversely across the reservoir between the side walls I4 and I5 thereof.
Although the separator plates may bepermanently mounted in the reservoir, it is preferred to make them removable. To this end the bottom wall 29 and side walls I4 and I5 of the reservoir each has a pair of spaced transverse grooves 2| therein of width sufiicient to receive the bottom and side edges of the separator plates and snugly'to retain the latter to prevent seepage of paint from onecompartment to the other.
Each of theend walls I2 and I3": ofthe reservoir has a channel member 26, 21 affixed thereto respectively and extending vertically thereon, said channel members defining, an elongated socket 23 to receive the lower'end129 of "a*sup'- porting arm 30, 3| respectively.
Although arms 30 and 3-| may be of any suit able construction, as shown in Fig. 4, they each 2 desirably comprise alength of relatively heavy wire reversely bent as at 3| and 32 to form two parallel legs 33 and 34 the end 3| of the arms being filled in as with solder as at 40' to form a bearing- 40 The portions 35, 315 of arms 30 and 3| which rise above the upper edges 31 of sidewalls l2. and I3 of the reservoir are desirably bent away from side wall l5 at an oblique angle of substantially 45 degrees with respect to the lower end 29 thereof.
Desirably; the adjacent free ends of legs 33, 34' of arm 30 are affixed together as by welding and the free ends 43, 44 of legs 33, 34 of arm 3| are spaced from each other.

33 of arm 3| is a locking member 45, desirably a metal tube which may be moved by handle 41 thereon upwardly on leg 33 so that the end 43 of the tube 46 may slide over the freeend 44 of leg. 33. to close the space between ends 43 and 44.
As shown in Figs. 2: and 6 a paint transfer roller-5|, 5-2 and 53" is positioned respectively in each of the compartments I! in the reservoir Each roller is desirably of rubber, although any other suitable material may be used and has an axle15i suitably mounted in the associatedcompartment. To this end each of theseparator plates or partitions I 8 and I!) has a vertical channel 55 on each side thereof open at its upper end 55. the bearing 4|) on end wall l2 and the associated. channel 55 on plate I8 rotatably mounting the roller 5|, the associated vertical channels on plates ISand i9 rotatably mounting the roller 52- and the bearing 40" on end. wall l3 and associated channel 55 on plate I9 rotatably mounting the roller 53;
As shown in Fig. 2, the diameter of the rollers 5|; 52 and. 53 is such that the upper periphery 59 thereof extends above the associated cut away portion 6| in the upper edge of each of the partitions and such upper periphery 59' is in engagement with a paint receiving roller 63.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 6, roller 63 which may be of any suitable material and desirably is of: metal, has an axle extending parallel to the axles 54 and which rides in the space between legs 33 and 34' of'the arms 30 and 3|, thereby Associated with paint receiving. roller 63 isapaintspreading roller 68 which also isdesirably of .metal and has an axle 59" extendinglparallel to axle: 64: and which also rides in the space between legs 33 and 34 of arms 39 and 3| thereby rotatably mounting such roller which will be retained by gravity against the periphery of the paint receiving roller 63.
Associated with paint spreading roller 68 is a paint applying roller M which desirably has an axle 15 extending parallel to axle as, which also ride in the space between legs 33 and 34 of arms 30 and 3|, thereby rotatably mounting roller 14 which also will be retained by gravity against the periphery of the paint receiving roller. Roller M desirably has an outer surface 1! of resilient material such as soft rubber which is preferably formed with a pattern thereon so that the paint picked. up from the paint spreading roller 88 may be applied to a wall or other surface to form the desired design.
Operation To use the device, the compartments I! may be filled with paint of different colors as desired. The operator may then grip handle |& and press the paint applying roller 14 against the wall to be painted and thereupon move the roller '14 against such wall.
If, for example, the roller 1:1 is moved downwardly it will rotate in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2. Roller 68 will rotate in a counterclockwise direction, roller 63 in a clockwise direction and transfer rollers 52 and 53 in a counterclockwise direction.
Such rotation of the transfer rollers will cause the latter to pick up aint from the associated compartments and apply such paint to paint receiving roller 63. As a result of the annular grooves 65 in roller 63, the paint will adhere thereto in a ring therearound thereby to prevent lateral spreading of such paint.
The paint on roller 63 will be conveyed to spreading roller 68 and by reason of the longitudinal grooves 12 in the latter be distributed longitudinally thereof to be picked up by the entire length of the paint applying roller 14 to be applied to the wall being painted.
By reason of the construction above described, the paint will be applied to the wall in vertical stripes with substantially no mixing of such paint except at the lateral edges of the stripes where the paints will blend slightly to produce a rather attractive effect.
By reason of the soft rubber surface of the paint applying roller, the paint will adhere thereto so that the pattern painted on the Wall will not be spotty or interrupted.
To clean the device, it is a simple matter to move the looking member on leg 33 of arm 3| to the position shown in Fig. 4. The rollers 63, 6B and M may thereupon b lifted along the spaces between the legs 33, 34 until their axles are aligned with the space between ends 43 and 44 and thereupon removed from the arms.
The transfer rollers may then be removed by lifting them from the associated compartments and the arms 39 and 3| may be removed by withdrawing them from their pockets 28. The disassembly may be completed by sliding the partitions from the grooves 2|.
With the construction above described, a highly eificient paint applying device is provided which may be used continuously for long periods by reason of the relatively large capacity of the paint carrying compartments thereof to paint patterns of any desired design on a wall in parallel stripes.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A paint applying device comprising a reservoir having parallel end and side walls respectively, a partition extending transversely across said reservoir between said side walls to define compartments in said reservoir, said partition being removably mounted in said reservoir, a paint transfer roller rotatably mounted in each of said compartments on an axis at right angles to said end walls, a paint receiving roller extending parallel to the axis of said transfer rollers and in engagement with the latter, a paint spreading roller extending parallel to said transfer roller and in engagement with said paint receiving roller, a paint applying roller extending parallel to said paint spreading roller and in engagement therewith and means rotatably mounting said paint receiving roller, said paint spreading roller and said paint applying roller.
2. A paint applying device comprising a reservoir having parallel end walls, a channel member defining an elongated socket affixed to each of said end walls extending vertically thereon, a pair of arms removably afiixed respectively at one end in said sockets on each of said end walls and rising above the upper edge thereof, said arms being bent at an oblique angle above said upper edge, a plurality of equally spaced partitions extending transversely across said reservoir defining a plurality of compartments therein, said partitions being removably affixed in said reservoir, a vertical channel affixed on each side of said partition, said channels being open at their upper ends, a paint transfer roller rotatably mounted in each of the compartments of said reservoir on an axis at right angles to said end walls, each of said paint transfer rollers having an axle hearing at each end in an associated pair of vertical channels on said partitions and on the end walls of said reservoir, a paint receiving roller, a paint spreading roller and a paint applying roller each of such rollers having an axle extending parallel to the axes of said paint transfer rollers and rotatably mounted on said arms, said rollers being in engagement with each other and with said transfer rollers.
