Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers, and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger including a swingable arm and embodying novel and improved means for retaining the arm in either a vertical, horizontal, or forty-five degree angular position with respect to a vertical supporting element.

Another very important object of the present invention is to provide a folding clothes hanger including a channel member, a swingable arm, and a locking pin secured to the channel member by a flexible connector and extendable through openings in the arm and the channel member or an apertured strip carried by the channel member in order to hold the arm in a selected and predetermined pivoted position.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a folding clothes hanger of the aforementioned character and embodying novel and improved means whereby the same may be quickly and readily applied to a supporting structural element, such as a door, a vehicle window or the like, in a convenient manner.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a, folding clothes hanger that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, small and compact in structure, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention applied to a supportingstructural ele ment, such as a wall, and showing the swingable arm locked in a vertical position, and with dotted lines showing the swingable arm in a horizontal position with a clothes hanger applied thereto;

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the present invention applied to a door or window, and with the swingable arm locked in a fortyfive degree angle above the horizon;'

Figure 3 is a transverse horizontal sectional view showing the swingable arm disposed in a horizontal position with respect to the channel member, and with parts of the arm broken away; and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view showing the manner in which the suction cup is detachably secured to the lower end of the channel member,

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Iii represents an elongated channel member or anchor member having side portions or flanges 12 and I4.

Detachably secured to the upper end portion it of the anchor member it], by fasteners or the like 18, is one leg portion 23 of a substantially U-shaped resilient clamping element 22 that will yieldingly embrace the upper edge 24 of a door, window or the like 26 in order to retain the anchor member 19 relative to the said supporting structural element 26.

In order to retain the anchor member Ill relative to the supporting structural element 26 and to hold the anchor member If! against lateral movement, there is provided a suction cup 28 having a boss 30. The boss 30 is provided with a longitudinal or central opening 32 that registers with an opening 34 provided in the lower end portion 36 of the anchor member H]. A fastener 31 extends through the opening 34 as well as the opening 32 in the boss 30, and a nut 38 threaded on the fastener 31 is received in a central recess 40 provided in the inner surface of the suction cup or vacuum member 28. Secured to the lower portion of the side flange l2 and to the inner face of the side flange l2 by fasteners or the like 42 is an elongated base member or strip 44 having a plurality of vertically spaced apertures 46 therein. Since the upper aperture 48 of the group of apertures 46 has a different function than the remaining of the apertures, this aperture will be referred to as an upper aperture and will carry the numeral 48 distinguishing it from the remaining apertures 46.

The numeral 56 indicates a vertically swingable arm having-its lower end secured to the side flange l2 and to the upper end of the strip 44. This arm is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 52 including a lower aperture 54 that will register with the upper opening 48 when the arm is disposed in a forty-five degree angle above the horizon as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. The arm 50' also includes an upper opening or aperture 56 that will register with a pair of opposed openings 58 in the upper ends of the flanges I2 and 14 when the arm 58 is disposed in a vertical position.

When the arm 50 is in a horizontal position, its lower edge will bear against the anchor member l0 and will restrict further downward pivotal movement of the arm 50.

Means is provided for locking the arm 5t in 3 a vertical position or at forty-five degrees relative to the anchor member ID. This means comprises a flexible element or chain 60 having one of its ends secured to the side flange l2 by a rivet or swivel 62. 56 and 58 in order to hold the arm i! in a vertical position, or the openings 48 and 5 1 when the arm 50 is disposed at a forty-five degree angle, above the horizontal, with respect to the anchor member It].

The openings '56 and 52 will receive the hook portions 66 of a plurality of hangers 68 when the arm 5% is disposed in either its vertical, horizontal or forty-five degree angular position, and the arm also supports a loop or frame 10.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A folding clothes hanger comprising an elongated anchor member having a side flange with an opening therein, a base strip secured in juxtaposition to said side flange and having an upper aperture, an arm pivoted to said side flange, said arm having first and second openings therein, said first opening being in register with said opening in said anchor member when the arm is parallel to said anchor member, said second opening being in register with the upper aperture when the arm is disposed at a forty-five degreeangle relative to said anchor member, and a locking pin received in said upper aperture and. a selected one of said first and second openings for holding the arm relative to said anchor member.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said side flange includes an outer edge tangent to said upper aperture whereby the pin will engage said edge when the pin is extended through said upper aperture.

3. A clothes hanger supportcomprising a vertically disposed channel member including a web portion and spaced flanges joined by said web portion, a vertical reinforcing strip secured to one of said flanges at the lower portion of said channel member and having an upper aperture disposed intermediate the ends of said member, a vertically swingable arm pivoted at one end to the upper end of said strip and disposed between said flanges, said arm having upper and lower holes therein, said one of said flanges having an opening in its upper end for registering with said upper hole when the arm is raised into the channel member, said lower hole. being in register with said aperture when the arm is disposed forty-five degrees relative to said member, and a pin selectively received in said upper hole and said opening and said lower hole and said aperture.

4. A clothes hanger support comprising a ver- Cir tically disposed channel member including a web portion and spaced flanges joined by said web portion, a vertical reinforcing strip secured to one of said flanges at the lower portion of said channel member and having an upper aperture disposed intermediate the ends of said member, a vertically swingable arm pivoted at one end to the upper end of said strip and disposed between said flanges, said arm having upper and lower holes therein, said one of said flanges having an opening in its upper end for registering with said upper hole when the arm is raised into the channel member, said lower hole being in register with said aperture when the arm is disposed forty-five degrees relative to said member, a flexible element secured to said member, and a pin carried by said element and received in said upper hole and said opening to retain the arm in the channel member and in the lower hole and the aperture to retain the arm at a forty-five degree angle relative to said member.

5. A clothes hanger support comprising a vertically disposed channel member including a Web portion and spaced flanges joined by said web portion, a vertical reinforcing strip secured to one of said flanges at the lower portion of said channel member and having an upper aperture disposed intermediate the ends of said member, a vertically swingable arm pivoted at one end to the upper end of said strip and disposed between said flanges, said arm having upper and lower holes therein, said one of said flanges having an opening in its upper end for registering with said upper hole when the arm is raised into the channel member, said lower hole being in register with said aperture when the arm is disposed forty-five degrees relative to said member, a flexible element secured to said member, and a pin carried by said element and received in said upper hole and said opening to retain the arm in the channel member and in the lower hole and the aperture to retain the arm at a forty-five degree angle relative to said member, said arm including an inner end engaging the web portion to retain the arm perpendicular to the member when the arm is swung to a horizontal position.
