Description
A. A. DICKSON.
Cultivator.
No. 26,259. Patented Nov, 29, 1859.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. A. DICKSON, OF ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 26,259, dated November 29, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, A. A. DIoKsoN, of Anderson, in the district of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a side view of my invention Fig. 2, an inverted plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in an improved mode of constructing the plow, whereby the same is rendered extremely simple and durable, and capable of being adapted for various kinds of work.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the beam of the plow, which may be constructed of wood, and C C are handles, which are attached to the beam in the usual or in any proper way.
D is a dat metal bar, the width of which may be equal to that of the back end of the beamsay one inch and a halfand about one inch thick. This bar D, below the beam A, is inclined forward and then bent upward at a less inclination and bolted through a plate, a, at the under side of thebeam, forming a loopshaped standard, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The bar D is secured to the beam A by means of plates a a', which are bolted to the upper and lower surfaces of the beam, the back ends of said plates being secured by screws and taps b to the plates a a. The upper end of the bar D is divaricated or split longitudinally and then bent over at right angles to the main portion, forming a traverse bar, c, the ends of which are secured to the handles by screwthreads and taps d. By this arrangement av very strong and durable plow is obtained, the bar D forming a foot or standard, and also serving as a brace to strengthen and l'support both the beam and handles.
E represents a share, which is attached to the front part ot' the bar D, below the beam A, by means of a screw-bolt, e, which passes through a slot in the front part of the bar D. To the right side of the bar D, below the beam A, a mold-board, F, is att-ached, and a supplemental share, Gr, for cutting weeds, &c., is attached to the back side of bar D. Both shares E G, as well as the mold-board F, are adjust.- able, so as to admit of being raised and lowered as circumstances may require.
I do not claim the attaching of shares to a foot-piece or standard, so as to admit of the raising and lowering ofthe same. Neither do I claim the employment of two or more shares and a mold-board arranged relatively with each other, as shown; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the peculiar-shaped bar D with the shares E, F, and G, beam A, and handles C G, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
A. A. DIGKSON.
