Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER P. WHEELER, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MOSES H. WHEELER & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MANUFACTURE 0F NITRATE-OF-SILVER CRAYONS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,223, dated November 22, 1859.
T o all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrLvEsTER P. VHEELER', of the city of Bridgeport, count-y of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved mode of manufacturing or forming nitrate of silver or lunar caustic into sticks or pieces for the purpose of preventing them from falling apart if broken when used by physicians or others for the internal organs or other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in placing one or more pieces of silver or other annealed or unannealed wire, wires or ribbons of metal through a part or entire length of t-he sticks or pieces of nit-rate of silver or lunar caustic as represented in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a. longitudinal sectional view in which A represents the nitrate of silver or lunar caustic and B the wire, wires or ribbon of metal passing through longitudinally the body of the nitrate of silver or lunar caustic. Fig. 2 is a view of the entire piece of nit-rate of silver or lunar caustic ready for use within which is the wire, wires or ribbons of metal which of course are not exposed to sight. Fig'. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view with the wire or wires in a spiral form running through a part or entire length of the stick. Fig. t is a longitudinal sectional view with a ribbon of metal in a twisted form running through a part or the entire length of the stick. F ig. 5 is a longitudinal sec- I tional view with one or more wires running through a part or the entire length of the stick.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I use a metal mold of any required form or dimensions, at the base of which mold I fasten the wire, wires or ribbons of metal,
then pass the wire, wires or ribbon through the interior of the mold and outI of the top thereof and fasten them to a small metal frame directly over the opening of the mold. I draw the wire, wires or ribbon tight or let them hang loose and crooked in the mold with the mouth of the mold up. IVhen the mold is heated in the ordinary manner I pour the nitrate of silver, or lunar caustic, into it in a hot and liquid state allowing it to remain there long enough to become hard and firm. The nitrate of silver, or lunar caustic is then removed and the projecting wire, wires or ribbon of metal cut off.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The manufacturing or forming of sticks or pieces of nitrate of silver, or lunar caustic with one or more wires or ribbon of metal running through the same to which the nitrate of silver or lunar caustic adheres and still holds to the wire, wires or ribbon (when used or otherwise) when broken.
Bridgeport Ct. Aug. 19th 1859.
SYLVESTER P. WHEELER.
