POCKET ATTACHED HOLDER Filed May 27, 1950 2 SHEETSSHEET 2 w INVENTOR. WALTERV BUDNY Patented Oct. 14, 1952 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,613,413 POCKET ATTACHED HOLDER Walter V. Budny, Ossining, N. Y.
Application May 27, 1950,.Serial No. 164,701 Claims. (01. 24-10) 1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in implement'holders, and, more particularly, the. aim is to provide a novel and valuable such holder characterized by the features that a plurality of implements may at one time be carried by the holder; that for each of the several implements so carried there is provided its own individual stall-like housing; and that these housings are adapted to hold the implements therein against accidental displacement therefrom even with the holder brought well toward inverted. positionyet in such manner that at Willany selected implement may be deliberately readily removed for use. Y
A further feature of the invention is that the holder includes means for readily detachably'segcuring the holder to aselected portion of 'a garment, as to a pocket, to dispose the housings and their contained implements within the pocket,
and also includes means whereby any selected ed claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
. In the accompanying drawings forming a inaterial part of. this disclosure:
1 is a fragmentary front elevational View of a garment at a pocket carrying portion thereof, with a now favored embodiment of the holder of the present invention secured to such pocket.
2 is a horizontal sectional View, taken substantially on the line .2-2 of Fig. 1, showing both of a pair of implement-carrying housings in attaohed relation to the main structure of the holder.
Fig. 3 is .a similar view, but one showing both .thehousingsd'etached from the main structure of the holder.
Fig. his a perspective View, looking toward the rear of. the holder as removed from the pocket, and showing the housings detached from the main structure of theholder asinFig. 2.
Fig. 5 is: a View similar to Fig. 2., but illustrating the holder constructed in accordance with a modification of the present invention.
Fig. 6 Ba rear perspective view of the modification of. the invention shown in Fig. 5, but with the housings detached from the main structure of theholder.
Ihe implement holder, according to the first form of the present invention shown in Figs. 1
surface of the pocket wall l4.
to 4, includes a main structure of the holder is shown as in the form of a clasp of metal or'plastie and incorporating a front member ID mainly consisting of an ornamental button portion H. Also forming part of said clasp is a rear strip 12, shown as hingedly connected as at I3 to the front member I9 and downwardly depending from such hinge for being engaged with the inner surface of the front wall M of a pocket and then to act as 'asecuring clip for the holder when thefront member ID is squeezed in tight against the outer The pocketinclusive of the wall i4 is, for convenience of i11us tration, shown as a patch pocket.
If desired, the hinge 13. may have associated with it a spring or spring-means, notshown, of the type familiar in the jewelry and other'arts, for tending to snap the front member ID and the strip i2 into engagement with the pocket wall It. -As shown, the button portion II has projected from its rear side a plurality of fairly sharply pointed prongs I5.
Suitably rigidly rearwardly offset from the strip i2 is a secondary strip [6, the arrangement being such that the strips I2 and f6 together define a structure which in transverse section is T' shaped.
At one side of said strip it, near the topthereof, said strip permanently carries a socket element 2! of a snap fastener couple; and at the other side of the strip i6, also near the top thereof, and opposite the socket element l1, said strip permanently carries a post element 2201 .another snap fastener couple.
Each of said snap fastener couples is for:inde pendent use in connection with a different. one of two stall-like housings i9 and 28. These housings, shown by way of example as exactly alike, may be made of cloth or any othersuitable and preferably flexible material, withsaid material of such nature that the implements inserted into said housings by Way of the open topsthereof will be dependably frictionally held in the housings against accidental displacement'therefrom. The said imp1ements', for example, may be pencils.
As will be noted, one of the housings l9 andZO carries near itstop a snap fastener element of the socket type, and the other of said housings carries near its-top a snap fastener element of the post type. That is to say, the housing 19 thus carries a snap fastener post element [8, this for coaotion with the snap fastener element 2|; and the housing 20 thus carries a-snapfastener element II, this for coaction with the snap fastener element 22,
To make it possible for any desired number of additional housings, similar to the housings l9 and '20, to be secured to the housings I9 and 20, it will be noted that the top of the housing [9 diametrically opposite the post element l8 carries a socket-type snap fastener element 24. Similarly, the top of the housing 28 diametrically opposite the fastener element 11, carries a posttype fastener element 23. Therefore, it will be apparent that any additional number of housings, similar to the housings l9 and 20, can be added to the assembly permitting a greater number of implements to be carried.
As will be seen from the drawings, the holder may be conveniently and securely attached, as even to the breast pocket of the sack coat of a carefully attired business man or the like, without being particularly noticeable, and, if noticeable, merely apparently a decorative addition.
When either of the housings I9 and 20 becomes too much worn, it is a simple and easy matter to substitute a new housing for the one to be discarded. Due likewise to the inclusion of I removed for use, simply by temporarily disengaging the appropriate snap fastener.
The construction of the holder in accordance with the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is similar to that previously described except for the provision of a means for non-rotatively releasably attaching the housings I9 and to the sides of the strip l6 Of the clasp and to each other.
The non-rotative attaching means is characterized by a T-shaped projection on the side of the housing 20 which is vertically slidably received in a complementary T-shaped groove 3| formed in one side of the strip 16. The other side of the strip i6 is formed with a T-shaped groove 32 for vertically slidably receiving the T-shaped projection 33 which extends from the adjacent side of the housing I9.
To permit additional housings to be attached to the sides of the housings l9 and 20', the housing l9 at its top, diametrically opposite the projection 33, is formed with a projection 34 formed with a T-shaped groove 35. Likewise, the housing 20, diametrically opposite the T-shaped projection 36 is formed with a projection 36 formed with a T-shaped groove 31.
In other respects the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is similar to that previously described and like reference numerals identify like parts.
While the housings for the implements are described as being formed of flexible material they could be formed equally well of a rigid material-metal or a synthetic resin or plastic Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A holder for a plurality of implements each individually to be disengaged from the holder preparatory to the use of such implement, said holder comprising a depending front member and a depending elongate rear member joined near their tops, said rear member along a portion of its length having a rib-like addition thereby to provide a depending structure substantially T- shaped in transverse section, a pair of dependent stall-like open-topped housings each for receiving one of said implements, and means partially carried by said rib-like addition and partially carried by said housings for attaching the latter to said depending structure, said means comprising T-shaped grooves formed in the opposed faces of said rib-like addition, and T-shaped projections extending from the sides of said housing facing the rib-like additions to be vertically slidably received in said T-shaped grooves.
2. A holder for a plurality of implements each individually to be disengaged from the holder preparatory to the use of such implement, said holder comprising a depending front member and a depending elongate rear member joined near their tops, said rear member along a portion of its length having a rib-like addition thereby to provide a depending structure substantially T- shaped in transverse section, a pair of dependent stall-like open-topped housings each for receiving one of said implements, and means partially carried by said rib-like addition and partially carried by said housings for attaching the latter to said depending structure, said means comprising T-shaped grooves formed in the opposed faces of said rib-like addition, and T-shaped projections extendin from the sides of said housing facing the rib-like additions to be vertically slidably received in said T-shaped grooves, and projections extending from the sides of said housings diametrically opposite their T-shaped projections, said latter-mentioned projections being formed with T-shaped grooves to receive the T-shaped projections of similarly constructed housings.
3. An implement holder adapted for insertion into the breast pocket of a coat or the like, comprising a clasp adapted to be mounted in position on the top edge of a pocket front Wall and having a part for extension downward along the inner face of the pocket front wall, a fiat strip extended rearward from said part, a pair of open topped housings depended along the opposed sides of said flat strip, and means releasably securing said housings to the adjacent sides of said strip.
4. An implement holder adapted for insertion into the breast pocket of a coat or the like, comprising a clasp adapted to be mounted in position on the top edge of a pocket front wall and having a part for extension downward along the inner face of the pocket front wall, a flat strip extended rearward from said part, a pair of open topped housings depended along the opposed sides of said flat strip, and means releasably securing said housings to the adjacent sides of said strip, said releasable securing means comprising snap fastener elements mounted on the sides of said strip, complementary snap fastener elements mounted on the sides of said housings facing said strip and engaged with said first fastener elements.
5. An implement holder adapted for insertion into the breast pocket of a coat or the like, comprising a clasp adapted to be mounted in position on the top edge of a pocket front wall and having a part for extension downward along the inner face of the pocket front wall, a flat strip extended rearward from said part, a pair of open topped housings depended along the opposed sides of said flat strip, and means releasably securing said housings to the adjacent sides of said strip, said releasable securing means comprising snap fastener elements mounted on the sides of said strip, complementary snap fastener elements mounted on the sides of said housings facing said strip and engaged with said first fastener elements, and snap fastener elements mounted on the outer sides of said housings facing away from said strip, said latter fastener elements being complementary to the fastener elements mounted on the sides of said housings facing said strip so that each of said housings may have similar housings provided with snap fastener elements mounted on the outer sides thereof.
