Description

Dec. 13, 1949 A. J. JONES 2,491,183
HAT TRIMMI'NG DEVICE Fileddxine 7', 1947 IN V EN TOR. Arc/Zakzfie J Jones ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAT TRIMMING DEVICE Archdale J. Jones, New York, N. Y.
Application June '7, 1947, Serial No. 753,150
2 Claims.
This invention relates to ladies hats and more particularly to decorative trimming thereof.
Ladies hats are generally styled for a particular season or occasion, as for example, a spring hat may have floral decorations; a winter hat ribbon trimming; for evening wear it may have a veil and these decorations or trimmings may be in any color to match the accompanying outfit.
The clothing budget of the average woman is limited and she generally does not have many different costumes. Although it is a relatively simple matter for her to vary each costume by adding a sash, using a new blouse or otherwise making small changes to the costume WhlCh are simple to do and inexpensive in cost requiring .but little skill, the conventional hat does not lend itself readily to any change, as the user does not have the skill to properly arrange and sew new decorative trimming to the hat. Consequently, as each costume usually requires a differently styled hat, it is apparent that the purchase of such a large number of hats would entail an excessive expenditure and hence be prohibitive to the average woman.
Moreover, in travel, unless the wearer carried several hats which would require her to encumber herself with large bulky hat boxes, her costume would be limited by the single hat she is wearing, which presents a serious problem, for an appropriate hat is an essential part of the well dressed womans wardrobe.
It is accordingly among the objects of this invention to provide an attachment for a hat that is relatively simple and inexpensive to make and consumes but little space and may readily and quickly be afiixed to a hat to adapt the latter for any occasion without fuss or bother and without the need of implements, or skill or artistic ability on the part of the user.
According to the invention these objects are accomplished by the arrangement and combinations of elements hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hat with a mount afiixed thereto,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with a trimming carrier ailixed to the mount,
Fig. 3 is a plan View of a mount with a trimming carrier afiixed thereto,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view similar hat as at to Fig. 1, showing the trimming carrier partially affixed to the mount and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of another embodiment of the invention utilizing snap fasteners.
The particular embodiment of the hat herein chosen for the illustration of my invention comprises a crown ll and a brim l2. Affixed to the crown H is a hat attachment comprising a mount [3 which in one embodiment of the invention herein shown is a strip of material which forms one half of the conventional slide fastener I l, the length of which is so chosen as substantially to encompass the crown of the hat to which it is aflixed as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
The mount or strip i3 is stitched or otherwise affixed as at l3 to the crown of the hat with the lower edge or connecting portion M of the strip l3 hanging downwardly in juxtaposition to the brim of the hat.
In the particular embodiment herein shown the strip I3 is preferably slightly spaced above the brim in the front of the hat as at [5 and slopes downwardly to the brim at the rear of the It following the general contour thereof.
A trimming carrier which comprises a strip l6 corresponding to mount l3 has decorative trimming I! affixed thereon in such a manner that when trimming carrier I6 is connected to mounting strip I3 by the movement of the conventional slide member l5, which in the embodiment herein is shown permanently connected to strip E3, the mounting strip and the trimming carrier are concealed from view and the decorative trimming appears to be fixed to the hat itself.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the decorative trimming I! does not completely encircle the crown of the hat but leaves an untrimmed portion at the rear thereof. This facilitates joining strips l3 and I6, as the slide member will be free to move without danger of entanglement in the trimming when it first is moved and the space between the brim and the mounting strip l3 enable the user to push the trimming out of the path of the slide l5 as she moves it around the crown of the hat.
An ornamental attachment which in the embodiment herein is a bow I8, is affixed to one end of strip It as at l9 and has a snap fastener 28 thereon which coacts with a corresponding snap fastener 2| afiixed to the opposite end of strip IE to conceal the unadorned ends of the strips and the slide member [5. It is of course to be understood that other trimmings than a 3 bow may be utilized for this purpose, for example, a ribbon or floral decoration may be used.
As the strips are concealed by the trimmings, their color is immaterial. However, if the user desires a portion of the strip to show, it is a simple matter to select any desired color for strips l3 and I6.
The user preferably has a plurality of trimming carriers or strips l6 each with a different trimming already afiixed thereto and thus if the hat is to be worn in the afternoon, a decoration with flowers thereon may be used, whereas if the hat is to be worn in the evening, the user; may quickly detach the trimming carrier with the floral decoration thereon and replace it with another trimming carrier which. may have, for example, a veil and a feather decoration thereon. As the trimming carriers and decorative trimming thereon are relatively light in weight. anddo not consume much space they may conveniently be carried about in. a. handbag.
The hat may be sold with the mounting strip 13 already stitched thereon, together with one or with a plurality of trimming carriers or strips I6 each having a different decorative trimming,.or it may be sold without any fastening means thereon and the user may purchase a set comprising a mounting strip 13. and a plurality of trimming carriers I 6 eachwith a different decorative trimming andi aflix the mounting stripl3 to the hat herself.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the slide fastener i4 is replaced by a plurality of snap. fasteners each of which comprises a pair of elements 2.2 and 23 affixed to mounting strip. 24 and trimming carrier 25 respectively, and which coact to hold the mounting strip and trimming-carrier together. It is to be understood that strip 24 could be dispensed with by merely aflixing elements 22 directly to the crown of the hat.
Thus a woman may reduce the cost of her wardrobe considerably and also be ready for almost any occasion by simply providing herself with one basic hat with. theattachment above described which will enable her to achieve interchangeable trimming effects to adaptv the hat to match any one of a number of differentcostumes.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and. many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a hat of the type comprising a crown with a, brim unitary therewith, the combination therewith of a mounting strip affixed to: said crown near said brim and substantially encompassing said crown, a trimming carrier substantially conforming to said mounting strip, means coacting with said mounting strip and said trimming carrier detachably to connect the two, said trimming carrier having decorative trimmings affixed thereto and concealing said last named means.
2. In a hat of the type comprising a crown with a brim unitary therewith, the combination therewith. of a slide fastener comprising a mounting strip, a, corresponding trimming carrier and a slide member detachably connecting said mounting strip. and said trimming carrier, said mounting strip being afixed to said crown and encompassing the latter,v said trimming carrier having decorative trimming afiixed thereto, an ornamental attachment amxed' to one end of said trimming carrier, fastening-means on said ornamental attachment, corresponding fastening means on the other end of said trimming carrier, said ornamental attachment concealing the ends of said'mounting strip, said trimming carrier and said' slide member when said fastening means are engaged.
