PATENTED SEP um SHEET 1 0F 2 FRED A. P\CC|ONE I-IEADPIECE AND SNAP-ON VEIL This invention relates to a headpiece and snap-on veil, and more particularly to wearing apparel comprising a headpiece and snap-on veil, wherein the headpiece can, if desired, be worn separately without loss of its esthetically pleasing appearance.
In bridal fashion, it is frequent practice to affix the bridal veil to a cap or crown. In accordance with the present invention, the veil is removably affixed to a crownlike headpiece, so constructed that it retains a finished, esthetically pleasing appearance, even after removal ofthe veil. Thus, wearing apparel in accordance with the present invention provides a double utility, the headpiece providing a fashionable appearance whether worn with or without the veil.
In view of the foregoing, it is an object of this invention to provide wearing apparel comprising a headpiece and snap-on veil.
It is another object to provide a headpiece and snap-on veil wherein the headpiece retains an esthetically pleasing appearance even when worn without the veil.
It is another object to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive article of wearing apparel, wherein a veil is usually coupled to or removed from a headpiece.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
In a presently preferred form of the invention, the foregoing and other objects are realized by an article of wearing apparel comprising a crownlike headpiece in having an upper opening adapted to receive a veil. Snap fasteners are provided on the headpiece to facilitate rapid securement and removal of the veil. The snap fasteners are affixed to a ruffled strip secured within the upper opening of the headpiece adjacent an upper peripheral edge, so that they are effectively hidden from view whether the veil is affixed or not. In the presently preferred form, the ruffled strip includes a series of box pleats, maintained in the strip by a ribbonlike member, the ribbonlike member serving also as an anchorage means for the snap fasteners.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
FIG. 1 is a prospective view, showing a headpiece and snapon veil in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 22 in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a detail view showing a ruffled strip as used in the present invention. 2
FIG. 4 is an exploded view, similar to FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a rear elevation view of a headpiece in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 6 is an elevation view showing details of a view in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein like numerals indicate like elements, there is seen an article of wearing apparel, designated generally by the reference numeral 10, comprising a crownlike headpiece 12, positioned on the head of a wearer. Removably coupled to the headpiece I2 is a veil 14.
The headpiece 12 includes a lower opening, the outline of which is designated by the reference numeral 16 adapted to receive the head of the wearer, and an upper opening 18, into which the veil 14 extends.
Referring to FIG. 5, the headpiece 12 ,is seen to include a plurality of spaced snap fastener means 20, disposed within the upper opening 18. The snap fastener means 20 are disposed adjacent an upper peripheral edge 22 defining the upper opening 18, and are distributed over an arcuate segment of the edge 22.
The preferred manner in which the snap fastener means 20 are coupled to the headpiece 12 is seen in FIGS. 2, 3 and 5. Thus, the snap fastener means 20 are anchored to a ribbon or ribbonlike member 24. The ribbon member 24 is in turn stitched, as at 26 and 28 to a ruffled strip 30 of lace, tulle or other netlike fabric. In the illustrated form of the invention, the strip 30 is arranged in a series of box pleats 32, the pleats being retained by the stitching of the ribbon 24.
The strip 30, with the associated ribbon 24 and snap fastener means 20, is affixed to the headpiece 12, within the upper opening 18, as by stitching 34 and 36. Operative portions of the snap fastener means 20 are thus located within the upper opening 18.
As is perhaps best seen in FIGS. 1, 2', 4 and 5, an edge'portion 38 of the strip 30 extends upwardly beyond an upper peripheral edge 22 ofthe headpiece 12.
Referring now to FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, the veil 14 is seen in greater detail. Adjacent one edge portion of the veil 14, there is secured a strip 40 of ruffled material, generally similar to the above-described 30.-The strip 40 may be affixed to the veil 14 by stitching 42 and 44, generally similar to the stitching 34 and 36. Associated with the strip 40 are a ribbon or ribbonlike member 46, to which snap fasteners means 48 are affixed. The snap fastener means 48 are spaced so as to be complemental to the previously mentioned snap fastener means 20, and are complementally shaped. For example, as seen in FIG. 4, the snap fastener means 20 and 46 provide interengageable male and female portions.
The manner in which the above-described apparel 10 may be worn should now be apparent. When it is desired to use the headpiece l2 and veil 14 together, the snap fastener means 48 need only be engaged with the snap fastener means 20 in the manner seen in FIG. 2. When the snap fastener means 20 and' 48 are thus engaged, they are completely hidden by the material of the veil l4 and headpiece 12.
If, on the other hand, it is desired to remove the veil l4 and use the headpiece 12 alone, the edge portion 38 of the strip 30, projecting above the upper peripheral edge 22 of the headpiece 12, hides the snap fastener means 20 from direct viewing. The edge portion 38 itself lends a decorative effect to the headpiece 12. Moreover, if the material selected for the snap fastener means 20 is suitably matched to the color of the strip 30 and headpiece 12, they are unobtrusive, difficult to see from any angle, and therefore completely unobjectionable.
It should be understood that the veil 14 and headpiece 12 of the present invention can be made from the usual materials used in such apparel.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof.
