BLACKlNG-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,226, dated July 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLIAM HART, of the city of Troy, county of Reusselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blacking- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to'an improvement in blacking-boxes; and the objects of the same are to make a blacking-box with ahandle that will enable the person using the blacking to do so conveniently without soiling the hands, and the box is so constructed thatafter the blacking has been used it can be used as a funnel for household purposes instead of being thrown away as useless.

With these objects in view myinvention consists in putting up blacking in a funnel formed or provided with a partition and a removable cover, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings there are four figures illustrating my invention, and in all of which, as to designated parts, the same reference-letters are employed.

Figure 1 shows in perspective my improved blacking-box with the blacking-receptacle end turned upwardly. Fig. 2 illustrates a vertical section of the same device. showing the position of the diaphragm -plate, a dotted line showing the direction in which it is moved when taken out. Fig. 3 shows the form of the cover and as detached, with the flange formed on its edge. Fig. at illustrates the form of the diaphragm and as removed from the cone.

The several parts and their operation as constructed elements in the combination are designated by letter-reference and described as follows:

o The letter 0 indicates a cone-form inclosure having a hollow handle, H, connecting with the former by means of the throat (I, and the letter O designates a groove formed on the inner face of the cone to receive a dia- 5 phragm plate or partition, 6, which is sprung into the groove, as in position shown at Fig. 2, and so as to inclose between the latter, the sides of the cone, and the cover 0" the blacking-inclosure designated at R.

The letter S designates a flange formed on the outer edge of the cover, and S the rim of the cone, so that when the latter is pressed down within the cover the flange will engage with it and hold it in position.

The blacking is put into the formed chamher R of the funnel in the usual manner, and when filled the cover C" is applied, thus completing it for the labels and trade. It will also be noticed by reference to the drawings that the tube H, forming the handle for the blacking-box, is arranged immediately under the blacking-box and is of lesser diameter.

An apparatus for holding blacking thus constructed has many advantages. The cover can be easily removed by tapping it on its edge with the brush, and as easily put on by placing the cover on the floor with the flange uppermost, and by forcing the box-rim down within the flange, without in either case handling the cover. When being held so as to put blanking on the brush it may be grasped so as to prevent soiling the hand, and when the blacking is all used from the inclosure, then the diaphragm and the cover are removed and the remainder applied to a useful purpose as 7 a funnel.

I am well aware that a funnel has been patented which had a groove upon the inner surface ofits tapering sides constructed to receive a strainer which was held in place by a spring, and which use of a groove thus form cd I hereby disclaim, limiting my application of a groove so placed to receive a diaphragm-plate, and only in connection with such a use of it.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
