Description

p 23, 1952 H. c. LINSTROM $611,145
OIL GAUGE WIPING DEVICE Filed Dec. 12, 1949 INVENTOR. /Z/'a/mer C L/hS/Iom Patented Sept. 23, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE OIL GAUGE WIPING DEVICE Hjalmer C. Linstrom, Milford, Iowa Application December 1 My invention relates to an device.
An object of my invention is to provide a device for wiping off flat oil gauge rods of the type commonly used for measuring the oil in vehicle crank cases, and to provide a device which is always at hand in that it is attached to articles of clothing or other articles worn by the operator.
A further object of my invention is to provide an enclosed arrangement wherein the wiping fabric is completely covered, and yet wherein a portion of the case can be readily detached for wiping the oil gauge.
A further object of my invention is to provide the above mentioned objects in a very simple construction.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement,
oil gauge wiping and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a forward elevation of the assembled device,
Figure 2 is a forward elevation of the assembled device with the wiping pad portion being removed,
Figure 3 is a view of the wiping pad portion,
Figure 4 is a plan view, and,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along the lines 55 of Figure 1.
I have used the character I to designate generally the base portion of my device, this base portion including the circular wall I! merging with the further upper portion [2, to which portion [2 is attached at [3 the substantially U- shaped member 14, the member M being adapted to receive the belt of the user or operator, thus providing a means for supporting the arrangement and so that it will always be convenient for use.
A pair of openings l6 are also provided in the portion l2 so that if desired, the unit can be suspended by means of safety pins or any other pin arrangement to any other fabric of the wearing apparel of the operator such as a shirt, unionall, or the like.
Extending outwardly from the portion I2 are the flanges l1 and surrounding the portion II is a circular peripheral flange l8. Attached to the portion I2 is the male portion IQ of a snap type fastener, which is snugly received within the female snap portion 20 which snap portion 20 is attached to a further member which is indicated generally by the character 2| such member in- 2, 1949, Serial No. 132,507 '2 Claims. (01. 15 -210) cluding the portion 22 to which the member 20 is attached, and extending from the member .22 are the further flanges 23, the flanges 23 being adapted to receive the flanges I1 therebetween when in the assembled position shown in Figure 1.
The portion 22 merges into a further circular wall 24 having the integral circular boss 25 pressed therein, the wall 24 also including a peripheral flange 26.
Positioned within the flange 26 and against the wall 24 is a wiping pad 21 which is made of waste, or any suitable fabric having good oil wiping characteristics, it being observed that the member 21 includes an opening 28 snugly engaging the boss 25, with portions of the member 21 also snugly engaging the flange 26. The circular flange 26 is received within the flange 18.
It will now be noted that in using the device, the operator grasps the outer flanges 23 and pulls outwardly whereby the snap engagement of the member l9 and the member 20 will be released, and whereby the entire unit 2| will be pulled away in the operator's hand and will appear substantially as shown in Figure 3, whereupon the oil gauge rod can be wiped along the flat face of the member 21, after which the unit is replaced on the snap fastener; in this way providing the advantages of a wiping device which is always at hand and will not be misplaced or lost. The casing further provides an efiicient protecting means.
If desired as shown in Figure 5, the unit 21 can be made up of a series of thin fabric members lying adjacent to each other, whereby as each outer fabric is used up or soiled, it can be removed and thence using the next succeeding fabric disk.
It will now be noted that I have provided all of the advantages mentioned in the objects of my invention with further advantages being readily apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. An oil gauge wiping device comprising a base member including a substantially U-shaped member attached thereto adapted to receive an operators belt for supporting said base member, a further member, a wiping pad secured to said further member, said base member having a peripheral flange, said further member having a, further peripheral flange received within said base member flange, detachable connecting means between said base member and said further member including a snap member portion secured to said base member, a further snap member portion for engaging said snap member portion attached to said further member, whereby said further member can be released to provide means for wiping a gauge rod on said wiping pad, said base member having openings whereby said base member can be secured by pins to wearing apparel, said further member having outer flanges whereby an operator can remove said further member by grasping said outer flanges, said further member having a boss, said wiping pad having an opening snugly engaging said boss.
2. An oil gauge wiping device comprising a base member including a substantially U-shaped member attached thereto adapted to receive an operators belt for supporting said base member, a further member, a wiping pad secured to said further-member, said base member having a peripheral flange, said further member having a further peripheral flange received within said base member flange, detachable connecting means between said base member and said further member including a snap member portion secured to said base member, a further snap member portion for engaging said snap member portion attached to said further member, whereby said further member can be released to provide means for wiping a gauge rod on said wiping pad, said base member having openings whereby said base member can be secured by pins to wearing apparel, said further member having outer flanges whereby an operator can remove said further member by grasping said outer flanges, said further member having a boss, said wiping pad having an opening snugly engaging said boss, said wiping pad comprising a plurality of thin fabric members positioned adjacently to each other whereby individual members can be detached after use.
